I don't think Greek cinema is dead (at least in the diaspora) as the two Best Picture Golden Globes were awarded to an American-Greek (Alexander Payne; The Descendants) and a French-Greek (Michel Hazanavicius). I told the Minister of Tourism/Culture, the old Athens airport should be turned into a major studio facility (plane hangers can turn into sound stages) thus creating 1000's of new jobs, new influx of capital and allow Greece to become the Hollywood of Europe (year round good weather).
Most of the interviewees know nothing about Ancient Greece. The greatest Greek filmmaker said “I say to myself that I could have made a career anywhere, but I have chosen to speak in the same words that were spoken by so many who preceded me. Greece is more than a geographical locale to me. It’s a spirit, a culture, and when I’m disgusted with present-day Greece — the loss of spirituality and generosity — I go back to those words said many, many years ago.”
Greece - thavmasia!, Poli oraio. The best place and so good looking! Pity that things are so dire there right now. I hear it's mega expensive to go on holiday there. £4 for a beer.? They also speak well too. Learn the language it's fascinating and noty that hard.

@EffLabels The first film projector was developed by Eadweard Muybridge, the first proper film created by Thomas Edison, The oldest motion picture is Sallie Gardner at a Gallop by the Englishman Muybridge commisioned by American Leland Stanford. The only Frenchman you can possibly bring up is Louis Le Prince who produced the second motion picture ever and what do you know he was working in England the centre of the scientific world at the time.
@EffLabels And performing arts are much older than the Greeks, the Indians for example had entire treatise on how to properly perform music, dance and performances. The Greeks were merely the first Westerners but more to the point, every Greek seems to point to greatness performed 2,500yrs ago by men who probably they share no more in common with then having been born in the same geographic location. What have the Greeks done recently? The Anglos went to the moon and discovered DNA.
@ImaginedWriter Greece was known as the craddle of WESTERN civilization. No one said "global". Contempory Greeks share a common hallotype with the ancients. It's somewhat ignorant to assume a whole race of people simply eveaporated to be entirly replaced by another population. What have Greeks done recently? Invented the pap smear and cytopathology, the blackberry, founded the international space university, co-founded AOL. Founded Compuware. This is excluding entertainment and politics
Man America's population is hundreds of million...greece is 11 million..and have started many things..not all..but much many from usa and other big countries...so don't say crap..please...
the biggest was Elia kazan and a another is a writer from the 50-60`s at these days writers werent very popiular...but he was one of the biggest..theProblem with Greek actors are that we greeks have antohers charisma...didnt fit with other folks...the reason why we dont have big actors are not caused by less talent but the hollywood machinery dont wwant greek actors...only comedians and average actors..like Zach Galifianakis or Rick Moranis...USA dont want a action actor.only stuntments :_9 know
@Danybella well.. i don't know where do you come from but don't you think the ancient Greeks built the fountains of today's civilisation?!? she did'nt say we ended ALL.. she said we STARTED them... check some history books.. will you??
@299vasilis Thanks for your comment. I think I was referring to the hyperbolic language: "all". I guess, having taken world civilizations, there were many ancient civilizations that contributed to today's civilizations: phonecians, persians, indians (indus valley), inter alia. Not to mention that the Greek contributions are usually framed in terms of WESTERN civilization. I'm not denying your contribution; i just found the comment a little unproportional, that's all...

The Jews and Greeks have very little in common. Read the Bible then read Euclid and you see the major differences in approach to reality.

Film was invented by the anglo saxon race, pretty good for tree swingers... oh the modern world too.
ImaginedWriter 10 months ago
@ImaginedWriter Theatre was invented by Greeks which inspired Film.
One of the fathers of independent cinema is John Cassavates ( a Greek)
I believe cinema was invented by the French, not Anglo Saxons
