  • @BadEditPro: does this machine records in AC or DC bias ?

  • @HamtaroEL I'm not all that sure. It's either really good DC bias or sort of mediocre DC. It actually sounds quite good, though. :) JC

  • @BadEditPro: Did you check what type of erase head it uses ?

  • @BadEditPro: I've seen these radios in my old club and school. There are 2 versions, one is an mp3 cd compatible read whereas the other one isn't and also one is 11 watts and the other is 12 watts. Is yours an 11 or 12 watts ?

  • Nice but as nice as my sanyo m9860, only thing that's better on yours is that it plays CDs

  • hahaha cool i have the same and i love mine cool!! xd

  • i have this cd player i have allot i think i should review them :/ like my sony tape deck it sounds awesome and it records like a studio tape would sound :P

  • real neat machine.

There was a brand over here in eh UK called Goodmans. Goodmans are a very cheap make, but on all there units like this they have a built in microphone on them. I miss the microphone - your unit looks like it is built real well :)

  • @m134mr Thanks! it doesn't get a whole lot of use but this one has held up very well so far. :) JC

  • Thank you, I have been wondering for months if i can record on this specific one, thanks brotha keep the great vids a comin

  • i have that 1

  • i have the same boombox very nice machene

  • is there any real DISadvantage to using a "stoppage arm"? does it wear down the tape faster because that thing's rubbing it?

  • Thanks for the comments. I don't think there is an increased amount of tape ware from the "stoppage arm." However, it usually means the machine will not auto stop in fast-forward or rewind mode. This system only works when the machine is in play or record. :) JC

  • You said you hadn't seen that "stoppage arm" in quite some time, you must use a lot of tape Walkmen! My old tape walkman didn't have that stoppage arm, but another tape boombox that I have from days gone by has that thing! I guess it's cheaper to do it that way and the easiest place to cut corners-coz who really cares? :) I'm guessing having it sense actual reel rotation is more expensive-but cuts down on size, which is why Walkmen generally have reel rotation sensors.

  • Thanks! The front end on the radio is very sensitive but could be more selective. It is a soft power system. You can push any of the function buttons and it will come on and go to that function. :) JC

  • A good clip. My little dynamo powered Sony radio is the same with the aerial in this one in that with it up things can sometimes sound worse on strong stations and it increases the likely hood of signal breakthrough from other stations. But just one question. Is it a soft power switch? (perhaps two) Can you power it up just by plonking in a disc and hitting play?

  • I find it amazing that Sony still make these things. By the way, my S28L has full automatic stop on rewind and fast forward, and mine only uses 6 D size batteries. I'm not sure if these units are available in Australia, but they very well may be. Nice unit for casual listening, you can't complain too much about the unit. Can it play CD-RW discs?

  • Yes. it is supposed to play CD-RW's as long as they are cut to Red Book standards. This machine will not play mp3 cd's. I have a Sony mini system that will play mp3 CD's but I don't get much use out of them because I find they tend to skip so I stay with good ol' audio CD's. :) JC

  • No clock but it does a have a 'sleep' function where it will turn itself off. :) JC

  • I have a Sony CFD-S28L that I bought in 2000, I used it a huge amount until 2006, when I bought a very cheap Telefunken stereo system, the Sony still works and my sister used for about 12 months after she moved out of home, I don't really use the unit any more, but I know that it still works. Does your unit have a clock? Mine does, but it doesn't have a remote control. The S38 and S38L both had remotes. I paied about $250 Australia for the unit in mid 2000.

  • I've seen this in the stores and was going to buy it but

I just didn't want pay $40.00 plus dollars for it.

Everytime I go to the store I still stand there rolling the box

around almost ready to buy it.I might just get it

one of these days. Thanks for showing how it works.

  • Thanks for the comment. II did the same thing... I'm glad I went ahead and got it. :) JC

  • Definitely Sony stands as one of the best cheap cassette player/recorder manufacturers.

  • You know, the interesting thing is that this is a new model just introduced and I has a tape player in it. It's not the best recorder but it does play tapes. That says something. :) JC

  • We have a Sony CFD-S100 L boombox, and it also records in terrible quality. :)

I don't know exactly, how is it old (maybe 3 years), but the cd player is excellent, it reads, and plays without skips.

  • Imagine that, NO WINDOW for the tape player! Like Clydesight said that's half the fun. Besides the fun part, it's also practical. You can see whether or not if the tape is turning. Would you (or ANYONE) look at it if you were to hear something wrong while playing a tape?

I happen to have a boombox that takes 8 D-cells. Although I don't carry it around places often. Besides, I would use the AC cord. Not a Sony but a Sanyo C-12. I'm actually the owner of it, but my dad got it for $5.

  • That is an interesting machine which you explained very well. No tone controls other than the Bass Boost? No WINDOW? Oh, cassette machines shoukd have BIG windows so we can watch the tape go around. I mean, that's half the fun! CD players should have windows too so we can watch the CD spin! That tape stop trigger, boy, that's an old design! Is this a current model, or maybe an older one? Odd that they would go back to the trigger stop. Thanks for the video.

  • I got one of those jokers on my desk now. I can pick up 103.1 with that thing. The only radio in the building that can!!!!

  • You know, I am the only person who knows what the hell you're talking about.... However, I can tell anybody else that's reading this that what he's saying means that this is a very sensitive radio, indeed. :) JC
