The crackling of the fire indicates it is wood-burning. The De Havilland Comet in an earlier scene indicates this must be 1953 or later ie after the introduciton of the Clean Air Act which banned smoking fires !
@johnster1964 Well, if we're going to be technical, the film depicts a time BEFORE 1956 (Clean Air Act) and AFTER 1958 (round windows on a Comet). How clever of the filmmakers to warp time like that. :)
@akapushkin Books! Not to mention radio and actual conversation with people! And theatre and music. Sometimes I think we're rather more dull for revolving mostly around tv and the Internet.
@Jayjen35 Yes, I agree. And those of us who feel that way are the lucky ones because we can still incorporate both into our lives, if we really want to!
I really love this version of the story with Joan Hickson! Many thanks for uploading! Would be great if you could also upload the missing part between "Part 6" & "Closing Credits". I would love to know the ending ;>)!

@DidaDragan Have you ever seen him in what is probably his most famous role, as Tiberius in I, CLAUDIUS? He died last month, you know.
