Recorded on July 25, 1929. There were two takes of this- this is the (second) take that was initially issued; the first one was eventually reissued on LP in the '50s, and later on CD. "Burt Lorin" was a pseudonym for Harold "Scrappy" Lambert.
This is the take where Benny sounds more like Pee Wee Russell. There are reissues with a different take and a different solo, sounding more like Benny would sound in the '30's.
@JCJasion Dear JCJasion: it's true BG sounds more Pee Wee than the way he used to sound in the swing era. Anyhow, it's the best solo I ever heard by the outstanding reedman.
My grandfather played with Ben Pollack some time during his career as a jazz trombonist. If you have any idea how I can hear some of his recordings with Pollack or anyone else, I would appreciate it. His name is Irvin Verret. Thanks.
Barjonah1, have you tried 'googling' your grandfather's name? I got numerous hits. Once you have some band names you should be able to find lots of re-issues and, I'm sure, plenty of clips here on YouTube as well. Good luck and thank you, I hope you enjoyed the clip. Regards, J.
Condorsat77, 'Sorry I missed your comment, please forgive the delay! This is a Victor Orthophonic Granada, it's a Victrola console model. Yes the larger floor models will sound better-fuller that the one Orthophonic table top Victrola or the potables. Basically the larger the horn the fuller the tone. The Granada has the second smallest of the initial 1925 Orthophonic line IIRC; I'll have to check on that. Regards, J.
Thank you for uploading a brilliant Pollack side with one of my favorite vocalists Harold "Scrappy" Lambert, of whom Burt Lorin actually was a pseudonym.
Kspm01, Thank you for all your very kind comments! This is another great favorite. I've bought three copies of this to finally get a relatively decent copy! ;-) Regards, J.
