This scene says a lot about McNulty and Freamon and their approach to policework, along with what the job means to them. They both want to make the arrest, they both want to take Bell down, but for Jimmy it's an ego game. It's about his desire to prove how clever he is, and take down Bell on his own. Meanwhile, Lester wants to take Bell down because it's the right thing to do, and is willing to expend the time and effort on the boring part of the job. Jimmy just wants to do the sexy part.
@razieldumas Nice obvservation. The "set fire to everything you touch" line describes Jimmy to a tee. Even when he means well, his recklessness destroys everything around him. Season 5 is the epitome of that.
In my opinion, the headline gets buried when talking about this scene. Everyone knew that Jimmy was in it for himself, cops and viewers alike. But what Freamon says to Kima is so on the money that I think it gets lost in the shuffle. Of all the people on the team, she was the moral center, the one with the most steadfast adherence to the true policework and the people she was accountable for and to & she broke from her roots by going with McNulty. As always, Lester is right on the money here.
"You put fire everything to thing your touch McNulty and then you walk away while it burns. I got nothing more to say to you! Nothing!!!" fucking classic line. Too bad Fremon didnt follow his own advice in season 5.
Kind of weird that Freamon ended up going along with McNulty's plan in season 5. Isn't that the complete opposite of what he's saying to Jimmy in this scene?
@SomethingRules I guess part of the difference lies in the fact that here, the Major Crimes is functional and pursuing a real target. In season 5, the MCU and the rest of the BPD has been gutted. The job isn't there, and he's not reporting directly to anybody he respects. Although by acting so recklessly and unethically, Freamon is more profoundly betraying Daniels' trust. But you're right, it seems out of character -- also with the scene where Lester tells McNulty, "The job will not save you."
. . . this crystalises the dynamics between Det. McNulty and everyone else perfectly. The man is a brilliant detective, but he's treated like shit because of his unorthodox methods. And when those methods work and he gets results, all of a sudden everyone is right there with their hands out.
Who invented a serial killer to get funding for the department? And who was right there beside McNulty - providing false teeth and a motive for that "serial killer" - to keep his wire-tap active? Freamon.
in the beginning, i bought into mcnulty as the champion of the good v. evil battle, wanting "good" 2 win out. then i realized how selfish, self-preserving, arrogant & narrow-minded he really is. just the same, the Wire writers created a 'real person" here, lol.
It's pretty rare on the show for people we respect to really call McNulty on his bullshit ... a very satisfying scene, made all the better by the laugh at the end. In the end, Lester just can't resist the Case, as we see in season 5.
Freamon is a team-player, and McNutty is only out for self, like he's got some martyr complex. I don't even think McNutty even understands his method of madness.

Oh, McNulty's right about chain of command and that top dealers should be targets, not low-level street dealers.
