lets remember all the trillion pound debt was left by the nazi islamic paedophile labour party. WHO DOES RYHMINGWITHORANGES VOTE FOR. WELL WE WILL NEVER KNOW BECAUSE HE AFRAID TO SAY SO .
People are paying far too much attention to the election debates than the policies. Basically, this is starting to look like whoever charms the mob wins...just like in ancient Athens. Politicians may just as well start to train solely in rhetoric.
In terms of the C. manifesto, I find a large chunk of those policies to be rather pointless and rather silly / not well thought out. In my opinion, they have by far the weakest policies of the three major parties.
My opinion is that debates are a terrible idea. Unlike USA, we DO NOT vote for the Prime Minister, we vote for our local MP for our constituency. Using TV to explain the parties' manifestos is yet another example of dumbing down. There are a fantastic number of editorials and articles in the broadsheets that are a fascinating read but I don't see many people picking up newspapers anymore. They are also a more eloquent read than the party leaders under pressure on TV to 'perform'.
Why would PR be good? Thatcherite majority made her unopposeable. Blairiete majority... Without that we may never have gone 2 iraq. I ask all of you with a good concience to vote lab in a lab v tory, lib in a lib v tory. Never again musy govt b unchallengable
in 79 we were in a mess. Saviour thatcher. Solution: control economy by controling unemployment. So full employment ceased to b a goal. "greed is good". several yrs ago on bbc4 there was a series called tory! tory! tory! history of thatcherism from its creation in the 70s to plans to privatise the NHS. I fear that a 10 tory govt could resemble a 79 tory govt. Dont vote tory please!
I'm quite dissapointed that the media such as newspapers i'm not naming them, only seem to focus on characterism, i guess that's interesting to, but what i'm more interested in is which party has the best policy so that people have a clear idea on who to vote for.
I find some good aspects to the Conservative policies, but their policies on Immigration and the Economy leave much to be desired to be frank. I don't trust the Conservatives in the slightest. The sly way Cameron keeps trying to make it seem that ALL immigration (including EU) will be capped pisses me off. I've never liked the Conservative party and their policies are just reinforcing this.
Ah. I dont like our government. It's annoying because of how each party has their own policies and I can never find one in which I agree with all, or most policies.
Oh well, here's to the monster raving loony party ;)
I think the debates are pretty good overall, but it'd be a lot better if the three of them just sat down with Dimbleby on Question Time and went for it! Far too many rules. But it'll be interesting to see what the turnout is this year.
As for the Tories, I'm ok with the runways / high speed trains but I'm struggling to find much else. The free schools thing is ridiculous on so many levels. Cameron hates Europe and Europe hates him back. I don't want us to be isolated, the way the world is right now I think we should be working closer with the EU than ever before.
Cap on immigration is not the way I would approach it, seems very arbitrary. And on the economy, I don't think their sums add up (I think that about all parties tbf, but theirs don't add up the most!) I just can't imagine George Osbourne running the books, it's a disaster waiting to happen. Worst of all though, I think they're a risk to the recovery and I think their economic policy, as ever, favours the rich.
As an Irish euro sceptic., I would love if any of our parties were for an opt out of the EU. The 3rd Heatrow run way should be stopped, i never thought I would be backing the Tories but I am, pity I dont have a vote, altho I still get to see Peter Snow and his "swing-omitor"
I can imagine Labour working out a cohabitation with the Liberals but not the Conservatives - the UK would be locked for months in coalition negotiations because Tories have no sense of flexibility for that. And Murdoch can continue stamping his little feet as far as I'm concerned - I would never buy his newspapers (comics). Unbiased information comes from somewhere else.
thank you for breaking down the parties etc - makes the whole thing seem a little bit more understandable ... personally I don't like them all but as we can't boot them all, i hope the enermy we know wins e.g. labour.
I do think the televised event is a good thing, as it allows people to broaden their views in politics. However it should not take a televised event to do this. I dont think enough care goes into choosing a candidate for most people, and they simply choose who they are told. People need to look into all possibilities, even minority parties. Do parties like the green party need a televised event for more support too? its crazy people could be so naive when it comes to choosing their leader ¬.¬.

I'm from Australia, and I'm not following this very closely but the idea of parents running schools sounds intriguing. Won't the parents, by default (as its the only way they know) take on the same roles as principles and what not? If companies only have reputation to gain from investing in these schools, if the school then starts getting a bad rep, the companies will not want to be associated with the school - and the school then would lose its funding. Sounds like an idea hanging by a thread.
i think its less on policy for the same reasons they dont teach it schools its really something you have to educatate yourself on ,some will like torys so its labs job to say yes but if you support so so policy loads of mothers will loose this entitlement and risk creating more chav familys or even gypos did you concider that?. some like lab so its torys job to say but this policy may harm business and risk the ecomony etc ,so its just a game of ping pong which is expected

I suspect the first hung parliament will be a mess. It will take time for them to get used to it. They don't have any history of working like this. They'll get it eventually.
The tory approach to human rights scares me. They're basically overreacting like children and saying because they don't like a few few ECHR decisions they're getting rid of it all. There are vital rights in there like the right to appeal benefit decisions.
Nobody in my house usually votes, this is the first time I have been old enough to vote in a general election, and I've been watching the debates which has in turn made my parents become interested and now at least one of them is going to vote when they normally wouldn't. As others have said, I do think its important to actually look in to the policies yourself and not just go on the debates, but I do think the debates are a good thing because they are getting more people interested.

• The media report on the catty bits instead of policy because that's what draws in the viewers. Sad but true.
• A hung parliament could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on the amount of cooperation. One one hand it would encourage positive debate as the MPs would need to work together to pass anything. On the other, if all communication breaks down then nothing will happen and we'll be back at the polls before Christmas.
so i dont think most people would preform under those conditions, so why should a future be denied from them? considering that most of the subject that will be actually considered is their math english and science and mostly academic skills, not talent based subjects, such as art or music, sorry for the long comment on education...
Of course more dicapline would be better at schools considering the high amount of asbos on our streets, and a higher standard of education would be nice, but it would be too stressfull for the students to actually preform, i dont mean it as an insult, i'm making these assumptions from when i was a child and had to preform to them (i'm not from the uk) and my back was ruined under the sheer weight of the books i had to study...
the debates are good for people to know directly from who they are voting from therefore practicing a better understanding of politics from the general public, and a better practising of democrasy. It is however should be made easy to understand what the terms and what are they talking about. such as these videos, cause not everybody will and would understand what the EU encroachment (sp? O_o?) is (one of them is myself)...
their attitude to helping others especially those who really need help such as the poor or disabled is unclear but that need to "do the right thing" I take this as an excuse to remove state help which is already poor to try and force people into work but for many this is impossible especially without help.
I would have liked to have heard more about their welfare policies which I find particularly alarming. Their policies don't seem to wan't to support those who are not already in a stable well paid job,
The idea of a hung parliament is good but if you just look at the way the parties are acting and using negativity against each other in order to win, it does not seem likely that it would work out well in reality.
I think it's fair to say I will not be voting conservative.
And maths also makes my head hurt, numbers are confusing!
The Conservatives' cuts from their proposed emergency budget in June would be detrimental to public services in the UK. David Cameron implies that poor people are to blame for being poor because they haven't done "the right thing". It's a great idea to put solar panels on rooves but they don't say the government will pay for it! We need to keep them out of government, whether that is by voting Labour or LibDem or Green, whichever is the most likely opponent to the Conservatives in your area.
I'm a LibDem supposedly... But that's a lot better than I thought. I thought the Conservatives were more Thatcherite than that! Cameron is to the left of the party though... Outside of constitutional reform I think a Conservative majority would be healthy, although I'm drawn to Lib/Con government in the case of a hung parliament.
The Conservatives are negative campaigners with press support... But if they weren't so whiny and depressing I'm sure their vote could increase!
I think that the written press should have the largest influence, the journalists actually have some political knowlege and can also tell the facts from the blatent lies that polititions spew out.
The debates only influence people to vote for a leader, not a party. I only watched part of the first one, but there was alot of lies occuring XD
I was just thinking about how much you care about politics and I thought that this is surely your first year to vote? Weird "/
I'm still really undecided because even though I like the lib dem stance on education and the environment, I don't think they are the right party to get Britain out of the financial crisis "/
Less influence through Murdoch's (Tory-)press is great! The Sun's headline was: "well hung and shafted" - (wrong on so many levels) I'm glad that such scare-mongering tactics don't seem to be working. I think a hung parliament would be good though it depends on the coalition...flirt with Clegg and get married to Cameron is what I'm fearing. DIY government is just abandoning state responsibility - would parents really build schools for the benefit of all kids? Exciting 1st election! Postal vote?
It's kind if hard to follow British politics because in the US it gets virtually ZERO coverage. The only reason I even know that the elections are happening is because I'm subscribed to British politics. But in the US at least I can say that to me, political figures are treated more as celebrities and socialites rather than actual political figures.
True. There's not enough focus on policy. I'm all for a hung parliament but one that doesn't include thee Tories, they're stance on so many issues doesn't match up to mine. x
It annoys me when parties say people need to take more initiative towards making greener decisions. most people can't afford solar pannels or geothermal units. the government needs to pay for the taxes on the units, or give buyers a loan or some other insentive before more people will act
Hm. To my American ears, even the Conservatives sound kinda liberal (compared to our Republicans). Also, now that I've watched two series of The Thick of It I have a whole new view on British politics.
About the television debates, I think it helps to be able to see the candidates and how they present themselves without the slant that the newspapers put on them. Then you can look at different papers to see other people's opinions that you might want to take into consideration.
I actually can't believe how many people's main reason for voting Tory is that they don't want our currency to change. There are a hell of a lot more important things to worry about.
I think that yes, it is good that people are watching the debates and there is less influence from the media. But it is still not as good as if people looked at the policies themselves rather than just at the leaders of these three main parties. People can't seem to make their minds up about who they want to vote for because of the debates, and they shouldn't be based entirely on what the three party leaders say.
The Conservatives seem to have a decent manifesto, imo. I think it's good that they're anti-EU because the Euro is already a bit wobbly. I know that the pound is weak too, but having a different currency means that it can't get de-valued if another country falls into debt (like Greece).
I also like their stance on immigration. I heard someone say that we should assimilate the minority groups we have already. Having a high constant flow of immigration surely hinders that. I love that the UK has lots of different ethnic backgrounds, but not if it causes social stress (which it does to some degree, hence the BNP). More importantly, immigration needs to be slowed somewhat because this is a fairly small island really.
Most education seems OK, except parents etc. starting schools
EU stuff went over my head (I'm blond)
A lot of immigrants I know already wear caps, I don't think the government needs to give them out.
Greener public transport sounds good, as do solar panels etc. although are they actually doing anything about these or just suggesting people should do it themselves?
Does reduction of intrusions into peoples homes & lives include restrictions on mother-in-laws?
Conservative sounds good but so do the Tories policies, i am not going to vote for anyone because no party would do everything they propose and if they do something it's not entirely what we wanted it to be but if i did i would go with the Tories because i want children and teenagers to be able to do their best and understand everything in high school instead of dragging behind and failing.
@emmabee11 Good. Thank you. You not voting makes my say in politics much greater :) You don't even know which ways I'm going to vote. You are effectively handing over the decision to people you don't know. I might vote BNP. I might vote Labour or Tory or Green or whatever. You don't know. Seriously, Emma. Vote.
Ahem, the Scottish parliament has a "hung parliament", as no party as full control, but they instead call it a "split parliament" which is identical except for the fact that all the parties actually work together, unlike the apparently abhorrent theoretical hung parliament of the next government.
All-in-all the Scottish parliament has worked pretty well.
Does a 2:2 guarantee a graduate will be a good teacher, or just be a good academic?
We shouldn't let those with a flair for teaching basic addition to five year olds be prevented from doing so because of their failure to grasp, say, 2nd order differential equations, or degree level maths.
The same goes for teaching at any level- so long as you know what you're teaching, you're sorted. Many uni lecturers excel in their field, but can't teach for the life of them.
@curiousmind5632 You make a good point that flair at teaching is important, although a 2.2 does seem so academic that is out of reach, and academic ability is generally useful for teachers, particularly at secondary level.
I wonder if there are any implications for older teachers who do not hold degrees.
I think the Tory anti-EU stance is really dangerous. If their banding together with parties that officially hate Europe in the EU parliament has shown us anything, it's that they hate Europe. I bet they'd love to leave the Union, and if the UK did that, all hell would break lose.
Television reaches the masses, a lot of people vote for whose personality they like best, even though thats bad, nothing's going to stop people doing so.
The printed press is reaching less and less people. It's time for the main influential source to come from a different media.
@thatawkwardmoment Also, the fact that if they're on TV, yes their personalities are the ones that win the day, but I'd rather have a television showing all of the politicians' facades than a newspaper telling me what facade is who and who's bad an who's good.
a minimum of 2:2 degrees for primary teachers? lol. Primary teaching is extremely competitiveanyway, I doubt a regulation for degree qualifications will make any difference.
I go to a Swedish free school! :) We have "real" teachers just as any other school. It isn't a big difference really except the food is better than in a state owned school. ;) I choosed to go to a free school becasue they offer education that I couldn't get in a state owned school. Here it just widens your options.
Hung Parliament could be a problem as parties seem to be having problems with each other but at the same time it may lead to something civil but who knows.
I like the Conservatives green policies, but I'm not too fond that they want to move away from any sort of say in the EU. I think I'll be voting for Lib Dem's this year.
Great - they've stooped for demonising the EU, simply because it's not run by Brits. I think that if a Brit had won the presidency (it's kind of good that they didn't; one of the British candidates for presidency was Tony Blair) we would have a totally different stance on it. As it stands, no-one really gets the EU because it's not in the news like our parliament is.
On adopting the Swedish model - I agree with what you said about the actual competence of parents/communities who wish to start up their own schools, but I would also like to pose another question - from where will all the funding for all these new schools come? And what will happen to other schools in the local area, perceived to be "failing"? Will they just be abandoned?
Also, renewing Trident... (forgive me, I am not up to date on every statistic)... it's just a HUGE waste of time and money.
Yet another manifesto that doesn't outline how they will fund any of these ventures. Labour have really made this election a hard one for voters by not publishing a spending review.
i'm glad that the printed press etc are having less influence than before, and sites like twitter etc aren't moderated so anyone can say what they want.. in my opinion the media is a dangerous thing - look how all they had to do was say "Nick Clegg won the first debate" and everyone went batshitcrazy for the lib dems! how worrying.
I think it's a bit worrisome that people talk about the most is how a politician presents himself on stage. Anyone can be able to talk pretty and look pretty. What people need to be more concerned about is what they will do if they get in office. It's sad that people don't read as much as they used to.
I'm not British, but I did take that quiz they have up on the UK Yahoo, and it said I have most in common with the Conservative party, which isn't surprising because I'm a Republican in the US. :)

their attitude to helping others especially those who really need help such as the poor or disabled is unclear but that need to "do the right thing" I take this as an excuse to remove state help which is already poor to try and force people into work but for many this is impossible especially without help.

The idea of a hung parliament is good but if you just look at the way the parties are acting and using negativity against each other in order to win, it does not seem likely that it would work out well in reality.
I think it's fair to say I will not be voting conservative.
And maths also makes my head hurt, numbers are confusing!
eibbore 1 year ago
The Conservatives' cuts from their proposed emergency budget in June would be detrimental to public services in the UK. David Cameron implies that poor people are to blame for being poor because they haven't done "the right thing". It's a great idea to put solar panels on rooves but they don't say the government will pay for it! We need to keep them out of government, whether that is by voting Labour or LibDem or Green, whichever is the most likely opponent to the Conservatives in your area.
mysticmegthepeg 1 year ago
I'm a LibDem supposedly... But that's a lot better than I thought. I thought the Conservatives were more Thatcherite than that! Cameron is to the left of the party though... Outside of constitutional reform I think a Conservative majority would be healthy, although I'm drawn to Lib/Con government in the case of a hung parliament.
The Conservatives are negative campaigners with press support... But if they weren't so whiny and depressing I'm sure their vote could increase!
FrankThePidgeon 1 year ago

There are a hell of a lot more important things to worry about.
xylojosie 1 year ago
I think that yes, it is good that people are watching the debates and there is less influence from the media. But it is still not as good as if people looked at the policies themselves rather than just at the leaders of these three main parties. People can't seem to make their minds up about who they want to vote for because of the debates, and they shouldn't be based entirely on what the three party leaders say.

Corporate schooling is such a bad idea I don't know where to start. Parents running school is only slightly less awful.
Sounds like isolationism to me.
More nuclear weapons is a bad idea.
More isolationism with their immigration policies.
Put the environmental load on private citizens. Rather than the business world where it counts. Typical.
Conservatives in any nation are evil. But I'm a Yank.

I think a hung parliament is a fantastic idea in theory. Whether it will work in practice? I think right now is too much of a risky time to find out.

The Conservatives seem to have a decent manifesto, imo. I think it's good that they're anti-EU because the Euro is already a bit wobbly. I know that the pound is weak too, but having a different currency means that it can't get de-valued if another country falls into debt (like Greece).
Continuing...
theguymjp 1 year ago 2
I also like their stance on immigration. I heard someone say that we should assimilate the minority groups we have already. Having a high constant flow of immigration surely hinders that. I love that the UK has lots of different ethnic backgrounds, but not if it causes social stress (which it does to some degree, hence the BNP). More importantly, immigration needs to be slowed somewhat because this is a fairly small island really.

Thanks for doing this Jazza.

Does reduction of intrusions into peoples homes & lives include restrictions on mother-in-laws?
...

Many uni lecturers excel in their field, but can't teach for the life of them.
curiousmind5632 1 year ago

<3
thatawkwardmoment 1 year ago
