wallowing debt?????? are you joking????? Australia's current public debt is less than 20% of gdp!!!!! by comparison the U.K.s debt is currently at ~ 70% while the USA is at 93% as of 28 of july.

Further more, government debt is not necessarily a bad thing, so get that idea out of your head right now. macroeconomic stimulus was needed to get us through the GFC and the first stimulus package was close to perfect in its design and implementation. the second half was a balls up.

when a market crash happens, like that of the GFC, governments need to spend money on infrastructure projects to boost the economy to fill any output gaps left by declining business employment. this was the point of the home insulation and schools programs. the key point of them was to minimize the impact of the GFC on the Australian economy. did we have the 0.9 % negative growth in 2009 that was predicted? NO we had a growth rate of 1.3%, why? GOVERNMENT STIMULUS SPENDING!!!

while obviously both schemes ended badly in themselves, schools with "wasted" money and homes with poorly or dangerously laid insulation, the macro economic goal of both schemes was achieved. we would be in a FAR worse place now if that money had not been spent. perhaps we would not be in debt, but we would certainly be climbing out of a pit like most other first world nations. i will take a negative international cash balance over economic crash any day thanks.

Government debt is just like the debt you and millions of other people around the world rack up every day on credit cards, car loans and mortgages. as long as it is kept at manageable levels it is a natural and perfectly healthy thing. example, your car is involved in a crash, you need another but dont have the cash. you take out a loan and pay it back slowly until its repaid.

governments act just the same. there was an economic crash and it borrowed money to ensure that the economy continued to function.

there is no issue in Australia about spiraling debt. 20% is not even in the top 100 debt list. if you want to see an economy worth complaining about go to America or the UK. (also, i think you need to take a trip a third world country to see what one looks like. Australia hasn't even been close for 50 years.)

as a masters student in macro economics focusing on economic crises management i can tell you that 20% debt and 3% GDP growth is not only not bad, its the strongest outcome of any developed nation from the GFC. Australia's debt ensured that we maintained a strong economy and it has been kept at levels not only within our means, but exceptionally low for an advanced economy.

if you want an issue to complain about, talk about house hold debt. At 120% its the worlds highest.
