I am only running a mild rebuilt 400sbc. .420/.442 cam weiand intake 2.5 inch exhaust, headers, hei dist, 1.5 rockers, crappy 882 heads (for now) factory rotating assembly, block is a 2 bolt main. March pulleys weiand water pump, 100 amp alt, optima redtop battery, just little upgrades, My 200r4 worked perfectly before the engine swap, I also changed the rear to a 8.5 posi unit from a gn to get it to hook nicely. :)
You should be fine. I think I'm running a bigger cam than that. That sounds like the Edelbrock cam. If the trans is old enough you might want to consider freshening it up. Don't hook too hard! That's how shit breaks!
Another question for you, hopefully you can answer it. I also have installed a 400 sbc into my '87 monte carlo ss. I know the 400sbc needs a 400 flexplate because they are externally balanced. My question is this, did you use the factory th2004r trans with that 400 sbc? If so, Do you recall the factory 2004r torque converter bolting up to the 400 flexplate? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Yes the stock converter will bolt to the 400 flexplate just fine. However, if your 400 is healthy enough you may not want to run the stock converter or even an original trans. My 200-4r was freshly rebuilt, so I wasn't that worried about it and I'm not running a really big cam so the stock converter (which had a slightly higher than normal stall) worked out well for me. You will have to shim the inspection cover on the trans just a bit (I used a few washers) to clear the flexplate.
Hey there, I have a question and hopefully you can help me find the answer. I just recently put a 400 sbc in my 87 mc ss and I cant find any header that will clear the small space I have. Do you have any suggestions for which headers will fit. It is angle plugs on the heads. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
