  • the guitar playing is just so good

  • @BOKNOWSCOMPUTERS

My hero, the late John McGeoch.

  • 'Sometimes I envy the young who get to hear this for the first time,'

Well I´m 39 and have been listening to Joy DIvision, Go4, Only Ones, Wire, all sorts from this time since I was about 15.

I only heard this for the first time when Matthew Wright (!) played it on his Radio show last year. And yes, it is fantstic to hear this for the first time. It makes me feel young.

  • I´d replace Staurt Adamson with Charlie Burchill, myself. Up to about 85 he was stupendous alongside Mick NcNeill. And I say that as a non Scot and no lover of AOR.

Imagine if they´d been able to record it with someone like Hannett, though.....

  • Barry Adamson plays a great Bass. I don't know why Magazine is criticized so often. They were great.

  • @FallFanCan

Beats me. But who are you referring to that is critizing Magazine so often ?

  • @roddy76to86 Well I just read "Rip It Up And Start Again Post Punk 1978-1984" by Simon Reynolds; he argues that Magazine failed to live up to expectations. I think he is dead wrong. That prat Paul Morley also said something similar in NME.

  • @FallFanCan

I've read that book as well. And I agree with every sentiment you've just said. These prats should just enjoy listening to the great music, and shut the f*ck up. Paul Morley ? Give me strength...

  • @FallFanCan

Bugger, I forgot to mention John McGeoch, probably the best guitarist ever to visit this planet. Apart from possibly Stuart Adamson. And both Scots !

  • @roddy76to86 Yes, I love John McGeoch, so good. I'm part Scottish myself. Cheers.

  • @FallFanCan

Yes, those Scot's eejits get everywhere ! I'm afraid I haven't been paying attention, but yer from Canada. I spent aboot a highly enjoyable week in Toronto in 1975 (my Dad's work, and we ended up in f*cking Florida, racist bastards) and was looking oot the car window at that ridiculous but brilliant tower. They were just topping the thing aff, but it wuz an impressive sight. Thank f*ck we made it home for the "UK punk explosion", with a "little" help fram thae Ramones.

  • mcgeoch

  • They just don't make wonderfully weird and creative bands like this anymore. S'a bloody shame...

  • pink floyd are fecking WANK ,you bell-end

  • 1 crawled back in the floorboards

  • I can assure that John McGeoch is very much on this recorded version of A Song..This came out when I was fourteen or fifteen, walking about school looking mean and enigmatic like Howard, then when I heard this I was actually (I swear to you)I was reading Notes From Underground by Dostoevsky, which is where most of the lyrics are inspired from (and Howard included a little message in the run-off of the vinyl single which read 'For FD').Amazing eh? Wonderful music, wonderful band, great times.

  • @steviecullen21

    Great story !

But why do you refer to doubt about John McGeoch playing on the recorded version of this song ? To me it's obviously John McGeoch, his brilliant style is unmistakeable.

  • Because this is unheard of these days, it makes it all the better to listen too. Thanks to You Tube we can choose good music!

  • Tremendous!!!!!

  • I have these lyrics as my profile on Last.fm and have gotten comments about how it must be metal due to how dark it is. Aw yes, the dark, metal tones of Magazine...

  • @pashernatelover

That gave me a laugh; thank you.

  • @jeffeastwood15

    It doesn't have John McGeoch.

  • @roddy76to86

    Winner: Roddy

  • @jeffeastwood15 Please, spare me. The only reason I don't pillory you for saying that is that there's an actual connective thread between Devoto and , ......that M guy...

  • I'm in the single digits and I love this song!

    Marvin Little

    Dog. Model. Blogger. Activist.

  • I wont say my age, but I am of the younger demographic. With saying that, I prefer music that was made by the older. Long live old music, and so fourth..

  • @TheNEWfilmfanatic99

It's a damned shame that virtually no one is capable of producing good music any more. Then you wouldn't have to backtrack, and could enjoy the incredible buzz of contemporary music like I did in my youth.

And then wallow in the nostalgia of it in middle age, and bore the younger generation going on and on about it !

  • Most under appreciated band in music history, theyve influenced such a large range of artists, me including.

  • I love this song. Simple Minds play a good cover of this song.

  • just was in the moood

  • Well, here's another one of those. I just turned 19 and I live in BELGIUM of all places! Yeah, this great band's listened to by people of all ages from all over the world ;) Fab song.

  • Delighted to hear that !

  • I lived in a block of flats years ago, and the upstairs neighbours would come down to complain about our loud music fairly regularly. After being told to get a life etc, they would go back up to their flat. We would then play this tune quite loud, as it seemed appropriate. It still sounds great. A timeless classic.

  • Great story !

This is my favourite "Magazine " song.

  • Ah, this is one of the greatest songs I've ever heard! I bought "The Correct Use of Soap" several years ago and I've never got tired of this song. Howard's a genius!

  • i like definitive gaze better

  • Well go and listen to it then !

  • hmmm...what if i said no?

  • Er, send round a hit squad ?

  • Sometimes I envy the young who get to hear this for the first time, such a great song, thanks for posting roddy, you're a gent.

  • My pleasure. I just hope a few youngsters listen to this, and it's not just us "oldies"!

  • im listening to it so ur ok

  • I'm glad to hear that !

  • I don't really think many people at all listen to Magazine. Very underrated now and "in their time."

I'm sure there's a few young people that listen to the band. There's always young people that listen to music older than they are...at least I think so.

  • I get quite a few comments in my uploads from younger people; so there is hope !

I sent one youngster a clip of the Pussycat Dolls followed by a clip of the Slits ("Typical Girls"), and he was definitely more impressed with the Slits !

  • @Stig1138 trust me more kids will learn. i,m 13 and i love it =D

  • @2doctoma

This is what I want to hear !

  • @2doctoma

I think it's all subjective. Contrary to what Roddy says, there is some good music out there now! But I have very eclectic tastes, so there's a lot of stuff I enjoy (many of my friends have eclectic tastes, as well). I'm also 18, so I guess that counts me as a "kid." Magazine broke up nine years before I was born!

  • @Stig1138

    I'm just a middle-aged man wallowing in nostalgia !

  • @roddy76to86 Good art is eternal. This song will be listened to and talked about 100 years from now. It really cuts to the bone, perfect.

  • @seanburi Haha i'm 17 here and heard this for the first time yesterday. I've been listening to Magazine for about a month now through recommendation from a friend and damn they are underated! Count me in as a new fan :)

  • @22crysis

    You've seen the light !

  • @roddy76to86 I'm also a long time fan of pink floyd (and david gilmour) and enjoy listening to ELO, roxy music, david bowie, kraftwerk, bon jovi and others. There is some decent stuff about these days but it's bloody hard to find lol.

  • @22crysis

There's 3 albums by Pink Floyd I like; Animals, Wish You Were Here, and Dark Side Of The Moon which is plagued with noises; clocks and cash registers ! Roxy Music/Bryan Ferry I go through phases of hating and liking. Bowie I don't like but was certainly original. Kraftwerk have 2 good songs but were the original synth band. The less said about Bon Jovi and ELO the better ! Check out the what they now call post-punk stuff in my uploads like the Cocteau Twins. I think you'll like it.

  • @seanburi

Sorry, two years late, but thanks.

  • i gota say, the lyrics to this song are golden. thanks for the upload

  • It's inspired by Dostoevsky's Notes from the Underground

  • 5 stars for the lyrics alone!

  • Well you know I always consider the lyrics the icing on the cake, but that first line always does for me.

  • I remember that I had only one or two songs of them (I'm sure not this one) on my old JPM tape but I have not digitized them and I don't really know why..maybe they are just going under randomly...not exactly my taste but nice to hear them again...5*

  • Thank you !

I had to fight copyright for this one. They asked me why I thought I had any rights to the copyright, and I said "Because I paid for it" ! Haha and it worked !
