Thank you for showing this. This is an area that I would have not thought twice about riding past. Now, these type of areas are a real consideration dependent on the snow conditions.
Zeedubhart, can you or your partner contact the Colorado Avalanche Information Center? We would love more details on this small avalanche and your very rapid rescue.
(Won't let me post specific URLs, but either use Contact Us or Submit Observation on our website)
"Special Advisory Statement in Effect through 01/24/2012 12:00 PM
Widespread dangerous avalanche conditions exist today. ... Triggering slides will be easy today, and some of them will be bigger than what we have seen so far this winter. ... Triggering avalanches remotely and from low angle or even flat terrain is likely. Be very wary near or below any avalanche terrain, and keep in mind that even small slides can bury and kill you."
Definitely a "small avalanche" (as accurately described in the video description).
Looks like the slide was only about 15 feet of vertical, but enough to bury both the sled and the rider). Horizontally, the break extended almost all the way back to the second sled and quite some distance in front of the first sled.
Thanks for posting this. All too often snowmobilers are associated with highmarking. The snowpack is so unstable, this is all it took to set off a slide. Glad his buddy was there to save the day!
This is my husband, It happen so fast. I greatful to Zach for his fast reaction in getting him out. That should have never slide. Makes you think! UNREAL!!!
@1982syoung I'm glad your husband is okay - truly lucky he is still here. But it should have slid and will slide every time somebody cuts out the bottom of slope like that. It's physics... not bad luck.
@loopghost It won't slide everytime you cut the bottom of a slope, silly. It just so happpens that the forcasted avalanche danger for that date in Colorado was as high as it gets. The move he tried to pull would be just fine 99% of the time. Glad he is ok.
Absolute spot on reaction there. Thank the Lord this wasn't the last guy in the group. Fantastic effort from you guys. Just goes to show you shouldn't underestimate any area, especially in conditions like this year.
WOW way to get to work on getting your buddy out of there!! I hope peeps watch and learn from this vid because it didn't take much for him to get buried.
1 soul saved, just like concrete , only sets quicker!! Thankdalord!

Thanks for posting that! Amazing footage. I've never seen anything like it. You usually see really large avi's and don't think about the little ones.

@IntheLowcountry You must have missed the part where it broke off the crown and slid down. Full on avalanche, short runout.

30 degree slope with no trees, terrain trap at the bottom... pretty much a textbook slide.
