If your serious about film making than I would holy recommend the xl2. You can attach other lenses to this baby and really do a out standing job than most. Find out the hows and you'll be great behind any camera, it all depends on what your filming, and what type of money you have to spend!
For all those who knock this baby is plain crazy or any camera for that. If you think this camera has a lot of grain to it, Tell me one tht don't when shooting under wrong light and settings? Your film will only be as good is your no how to shoot and properly light subjects. Broad casting don't except HD so if your the internet type than hd but sd will do the trick as well. I'll suggest you take your time and do whats needed for the job. Make good of your direction and budget. Camera are Cameras
Can someone help me? Im running win7 and i dont know how to import the video from my camera to my PC, i have Sony Vegas 10.0 and the required lead but i cant get it to work! :( Please help meeee!!!! :(
@torztxn iCarly shows a Canon XL1s but they actually shoot with high-end cameras (the exact make/model is unspecified on the web). The XL1s is just a prop.
For Anyone interested in receiving ANAL from this highly-priced-still-on-AV-input-with-S-video-low-res-MIni-DV, my brother is getting rid of his one-time used Canon XL2 with FLUORITE! homoness OMG! Those who want to take their "indi" film skills to a whole new level of stone age awsomeness, can be yours for the ultra low price of $3500, for the "indi" film Spielberg's who still love their grainy movie's. Act now and receive a "lesson in life" yours free when you purchase this garbage.
@SupraNaturalTT Wow dude, calm the fuck down. Grainy? the XL2 is SD, not Super 8. I got mine for 1200 with 2 other lenses from a studio connection, and I have NEVER looked back. And the most up-to-date cameras these days, have analogue outputs, because it's EFFICIENT. Not too many people WILL buy these new, and I do agree, it's too much, but don't mock people, you just end up looking like a douchey faggot.
Wow its amazing how much response I have seen on this POS. Guess people haven't pulled the big veined black cock out of their ass and realized that they are paying way to much for a piece of outdated technology. For this amount of money, its still based off of a damn mini DV! But let me guess everyone here is a just-out-of-college "indi" movie maker's that have an appreciation for a grainy picture and think "wow my $4000 dollars totally could have went to something better."
First off i am scratching my head as to why people think this camera is good. I have seen it in action and think it is the biggest piece of shit. The picture quality is sub par (962x480) for $3500, what the shit. This is not true HD oh that's right Canon wants you to spend $6000 for that. This cam in no way shape or for even comes close to my brothers Sony HD camcorder that he picked up half priced for $250. I don't get it, it uses mini DV for the loose, and fire wire(gay, homo, and um slow)
@SupraNaturalTT this isnt an HD camera, so of course the picture won't be as clear, this is a great camera to use in independent pictures or documentary filmmaking, but don't expect massive hollywood box offices with this unless you are a masterful filmmaker
im planing to buy my first really professional camcorder and so far this one has garbed my attention, if you could awould you recommend this and its tape right? how do i get it on my computer?
I almost bought a XL1 for $1000, and noticed it didn't have the XLR inputs, deal breaker for me. and now i found this puppy for $2800. but I've found sony HDR FX1 for $1300 and it's HD. My PC doesn't have the power to edit in HD but it seems like the FX1 kicks the XL2s ass. and the FX1 has a 3 and a half inch LCD, but doesn't have XLR inputs or 4 audio channels!
They should re-design the body. They need to add a 2.5 or 3 inch LCD where the control dial is, move the control dial farther back to where the audio panel is, make the control dial smaller by taking the Audio monitor out of it, move the audio monitor onto the audio panel, make the shoulder pad detachable, and place other control dials like frame rate and aspect ratio closer to the bottom. They should retain the small viewfinder and the general body shape.
which one is best is all about opinion. you can check reviews and the new hvx200 out does the xl2 but not the dvx100. So as far as tech specs go the xl2 beats the dvx100. FYI the new Star Trek was shot in HD.
I've got one (used) and I have to say it works nicely with proper light. BTW the XL2 was used to shoot "30 days later" along with an impressive list of indie movies. It offers great performances but it isn't obviously an HD camera.
After plugging mine into a Sony field monitor I just discovered that the 16:9 display is actually significantly cropped in the viewfinder. This is pretty lame. But the camera is great!
For all those people who are bashing the xl2: This is the camera that we use in broadcasting class at school, and it is beautiful. The picture is near-flawless, and compared to the Sony HDV HVR-HD1000U that we have, it blows them out of the water.
@davalosfilm The HD100 is not really a comparable camera. It's not even a prosumer...it's a consumer in a large body. The FX1 or FX7 are much better examples, and having used both the FX1 is much better
It's a great camera. However, IF you don't need a removable lense, go with the Panasonic...You can find them for 1200 to 1500 on Ebay, slightly used AND they're HD AND the standard fixed mount Leica lense looks somewhat better. Colors too. BUT this is a great camera. Unfortunately, I can only afford the older XL1S BUT for 300 bux, I can't complain.
@LethargicBannanazZ Hmmm... Well I just read this response to my comment. I don't really appreciate your use of deprecating language, especially since I didn't try to offend anyone with my comment. However, if I offended you in any way by stating my experiences in order to help out people who are wondering about the XL2, I do apologize. In the future though, please don't pick on someone because their opinion differs from your own. It's mean and, honestly, doesn't reflect well on you.
I have this camera and I am still so far from knowing everything it can do. Plus I have no real clue how to use it. I have some video that looks great and some that looks like crap. This camera is definitely all about the users ability. For an SD camera and the price its totaly worth it.
This is actually one of the best camera's out there. You need to know how to use a camera first, you probably had the image overexposed and it caused it to be grainy. I used this camera before and the picture was fine. 28 days later even used it to make a feature film, if it was good enough for danny boyle then it should be good enough for you
it is a scam? well that sucks i was really happy that i found it that cheap and figured i would save quite a bit from there. thanks for saving my money.
rather be disappointed then pissed off screaming at some crooks from Brooklyn about why my camera is Japanese, did not come with the normal included items and why they charged me double the advertised price. its ok though you can find the vx2100 on ebay "like new" for 1600
There are some nice alternatives out there (new generation hi def Panasonics, JVCs and more affordable Sonys), more every day, but considering what the XL2 is capable of and, particularly, that the price is steadily climbing down...
The difference between 15 or 30 microscopically detailed nostril hairs in a closeup isn't that monumental a deal, personally. Might not be Panavision or CineAlta but until Peter Jackson mails me either, hey.
You can decide. The MiniDV tape will be played, and at the same time, the computer records it. After that you can save it in any format you like. (I'm not sure;). I don't have it, but i just like the product.)
thanks! i don't have one of those either (way too expensive) but i'm thinking of saving my money, so maybe in a few years it will be cheaper... i wanted to know about the format, because i am ALWAYS having problems with importing videos from cameras and them being in weird formats. THANKS AGAIN!
Capturing video in iMovie means that you can export it in lots of formats. What about, 3G, Apple TV, AVI, DV Stream,, FLC, iPhone and iPod, ore maybe send to iTunes. Even direct upload to Youtube. In all the cases you can choose the amount off compression.
This records on videocassette correct? Sorry if this is a dumb question but is there any way to hook this camera up to a computer and transfer your images so that they can be edited on your computer in an editing program? The whole videocassette thing is throwing me off.
it uses fire wire not cassete. if you want to record a footage from a camera that uses tapes you have to have a video caputer card wich is what i do you can goole them or ask your local radio shack. basicly you havethe video capture card then go to your windows movie maker or what ever program you have and then there should be an option that says capture from device click on it and then stream the video to the computer. Hope this helped you alot i had the same problem
Use the IEEE1394 (Firewire) in/output. Free download the DV-PC Recorder software, at canon-europedotcom. Record all the stuff you got on tape to your harddrive by using the XL2 as a video player. This needs to be done in realtime so it can take a while but there's no loss in image or sound quality. Using a Mac, you don't need to download anything.
Simply connect your XL2 using the firewireconnecter, start up iMovie and your ready to go...
does it work with any imovie? just purchased ilife 9... and thanks for that awesome explanation! even a noob like me could understand that!!! YOU ROCK!
film shoots at 24 frames per sec while video shoots at 25, 30 or even 60 fps. What the digital camera does is drop one frame per second to achieve "film like quality"
hello! looking to buy an xl-2, even though it is technically out-of date, but nonetheless totally reliable. one thing i love about it is that it can shoot 24p, i.e., 24 frames per second, "mimmicking" the standard frame

Totally Disagree. I have owned 2 XL2 cameras and I can assure you they do not compare at all to HD cameras.
The XL2 produces a fair looking image, (not bad for SD) as long as it has a ton of light.
We actually got better color performance from our GL2's.
We sold all of our XL2's and GL2's for Panasonic HD cameras.
BTW, stay away from Canon's HD cameras. Not good.
I was a 20 year Canon user and HD is what caused us to switch.

yeah sorry to disappoint you,A quick gooogle search about the website helped me not getting ripped off
(imagine my reaction when I saw an XL2 for 939$!)
Anyway hope you get your camera fast !
I'm getting my xl2 this week-end finally cost me 2500$ canadian for a used one
spykload 2 years ago
rather be disappointed then pissed off screaming at some crooks from Brooklyn about why my camera is Japanese, did not come with the normal included items and why they charged me double the advertised price. its ok though you can find the vx2100 on ebay "like new" for 1600
somerockenguy 2 years ago
i removed my comment about soniccameras because apparently they are a Brooklyn scam company with many names
somerockenguy 2 years ago
:( that would be absolutely amazing if it was available for $900. I wonder how much they do go for second hand..
IndyCreations 2 years ago
Second hand they go for about 2-3,400 bucks. I've been looking for one myself.

Might not be Panavision or CineAlta but until Peter Jackson mails me either, hey.

how do i get the footage on my computer? do you have to use tapes or does it also work differently... what format are the vids in? mp4, vob, etc...?
KINGofCLUBSS 3 years ago
You can decide. The MiniDV tape will be played, and at the same time, the computer records it. After that you can save it in any format you like. (I'm not sure;). I don't have it, but i just like the product.)
dapartybee 3 years ago
thanks! i don't have one of those either (way too expensive) but i'm thinking of saving my money, so maybe in a few years it will be cheaper... i wanted to know about the format, because i am ALWAYS having problems with importing videos from cameras and them being in weird formats. THANKS AGAIN!
KINGofCLUBSS 3 years ago
Yo King,
Capturing video in iMovie means that you can export it in lots of formats. What about, 3G, Apple TV, AVI, DV Stream,, FLC, iPhone and iPod, ore maybe send to iTunes. Even direct upload to Youtube. In all the cases you can choose the amount off compression.
Need more???

Calichickme 3 years ago
Yes it uses 1/4" miniDV cassettes.
You can easy connect it to your computer with the IEEE1394 (firewire) or with the RCA videoplug and RCA audioplug.
Sorry calichickme but your completely wrong ibintis one.
Rumblingbass 3 years ago 2
hey how would i go by putting what i record on xl2 on computer
dwightgraham 3 years ago
Use the IEEE1394 (Firewire) in/output. Free download the DV-PC Recorder software, at canon-europedotcom. Record all the stuff you got on tape to your harddrive by using the XL2 as a video player. This needs to be done in realtime so it can take a while but there's no loss in image or sound quality. Using a Mac, you don't need to download anything.
Simply connect your XL2 using the firewireconnecter, start up iMovie and your ready to go...
Hope this helps you,

does it work with any imovie? just purchased ilife 9... and thanks for that awesome explanation! even a noob like me could understand that!!! YOU ROCK!

Hey what is the diff in TAPE and FILM thanks!
OMAproductions 3 years ago
film shoots at 24 frames per sec while video shoots at 25, 30 or even 60 fps. What the digital camera does is drop one frame per second to achieve "film like quality"
chookin1 3 years ago
i remember watching this over and over when it first came out!

SHOOT 2:3 "PULL DOWN" ONLY IF... your project will be seen on TV.
SHOOT 2:3:3:2 "PULL DOWWN" ONLY IF... your project will be transfered to FILM for theatrical distribution.
Eyeballfilm 3 years ago 2
Sort of. Shoot 2:3 if you need to go directly to TV and cannot go through an editor.
Shoot 2:3:3:2 if you can process the frames in your editor. It's the only way to get the unblended progressive frames.
2:3:3:2
AA BB BC CC DD (the BC frame can be discarded)
2:3
AA BB BC CD DD (The C frame must be constructed from the BC and CD frames, C is "polluted" by B and D during DV compression.)

hello! looking to buy an xl-2, even though it is technically out-of date, but nonetheless totally reliable. one thing i love about it is that it can shoot 24p, i.e., 24 frames per second, "mimmicking" the standard frame
