  • wow you people are simple minded. just listen to the good music and stop trash talking other bands.

  • This song hits home.

  • Incredible talent, this entire group. I am thankful for all of them.

  • The Avett Brothers make some of the best music available today and this song only proves that statement. Incredibly poignant lyrics and beautifully written music make The Avett Brothers the total package.

  • Mumford sucks. Pure and simple, no more comparison. The Avett's created their own genre of music. They worked hard and climbed their way up the musical ladder, from crappy gigs in Greenville to selling out HOB for three nights in a row. Don't tell me that the Mumford guys weren't sitting around listening to the Avett's when they "found their sound". Mumford will fade away (hopefully soon). TAB will continue to do what they do, work hard, tour harder, and continue to break musical boundaries.

  • @bholland42080 You make good points, but i'm sorry, mumford does not suck in the least. they're amazingly talented and make great music. not to say the avett brothers don't, they're equally amazing and talented.

  • @bholland42080 I like the Avetts but they have in no way "created their own genre." It's simple folk/country/bluegrass. New (good) lyrics over the same chords Hank Williams played. It's not groundbreaking, but it doesn't have to be to be good music.

  • @tylerdenning

I agree, just like Mumford and Sons, they all follow in the same footsteps of greats who've gone before them. I'm just glad to see the wheel of the world turning, so a Folk loving farmboy is aware of great folk, blue grass, country, blues music blending in another great folk revival.

  • @bholland42080 I agree that TAB is alot better but jesus christ what did Mumford do to you?

  • Once Mumford has been doing it for a decade then we can have the comparison talk. Until then shut up, sit back and listen to the future...The Avett Brothers.

  • @AdamDavisBeatty Mumford is the next Coldplay......they will sellout and go pop. The Avetts will be loved always for being true to their songs. Like Dylan, Neil Young, Johnny Cash....playing the music they love for those that love them back.

  • I love Mumford and Avett also, both are great.

  • @yourmartyr while Avert Brothers are amazing, don't diss Mumford; they are awesome as well. If you don't think so, you must not recognize true talent!

  • @LeeBree95

Mumford is good and all but they are a British group playing American Folk music. If your looking for Americana/ folk music then look no further than The Avett's.

  • @LeeBree95

Where is Mumford's talent? Their songwriting sounds like "C" level poetry at any Junior College. The instrumentation is boring (different than simple) and predictable with the same incredibly bland harmony and build in song after song. It's generic radio rock played with trendy instrumentation. Nothing the band does makes sense from an artistic perspective but everything they do makes sense from a marketing point of view. They couldn't be further from the Avett Brothers.

  • @socalsugar That was beautiful. It succinctly says why I think Mumford is just riding the wave of talent like that of the Avetts. Thank you so much for getting it out so plainly socalsugar.

  • @LeeBree95 I'm with you there. I absolutely love the Avett Brothers, but I'm a huge fan of Mumford as well. Both extremely talented folk groups that are worth being on anyone's playlist. Constant comparisons take away from the ability to simply enjoy amazing music.

  • thats a beautiful guitar.

  • I love it!

  • Thank you so much for the music Avetts <3....we are in this together!

  • best song ever

  • They sang this in Greensboro in October. That was such an awesome concert. They did an acapella version of "Down to the River to Pray" as well.

  • The better Mumford and Sons

  • @TheKatievegan mumford and sons shouldn't even be brought up. They can't compare to the avert brothers sonically, culturally, or even on a basic skill level.

  • when I first watched this video, i was completly blown away, it had about 200 views..

I watch it regularly but never bothered to look at the views. now a half year later, it has almost 170.000 views.

the avett brothers are just awesome - i loved you guys from the first moment i've found you.

  • @samonyak... yeah... I put 100,000 of the views on there myself. *SIGH*

  • They performed the best show i have ever been to in Greenville,SC!! They didnt have this huge fancy production! You could actually understand the words they sang & they sounded amazing! 2 very beautiful souls!!

  • Seth's the one with the beard, Scott's the one with the guitar.

  • @markadis99 That's too confusing, Seth sings and Scott is the one who has on the button up shirt right? No, Scott sings and Seth has short hair?

  • @somethingsimple631 Seth is the taller one who sings the chorus-y part.

  • Scott's insightful and heartfelt lyrics are proof that he's a genuine poet, but there's just something about Seth's delivery and vocals that cuts me right to the bone. These guys are incredible.

  • anyone who can say that these guys are "sell outs" are cowards and ungrateful for the amazing music these guys are still making. They started from the bottom and worked their way up and are forever grateful for the fans that got them there. Are you mad at them for being able to pay their bills? Take care of their families? Be happy for them not bitter. That is just my opinion.

  • i love how there voices have matured

  • "carpenter" follow your dream! forget the woman ...

  • @bluesbluebu

"And if your love laughs at your dreams

Well it's not as bad as it seems

either way one of them has got to go" -Salvation Song

  • if you dig this you've got to check out The Regretting Man on youtube

  • @pher4992 why you say they they will never sell out? meaning a show?

  • @angelakellner i believe they mean like sell out and forget the people who loved them from the start

  • @angelakellner nooo not at all. what i mean is i don't think they will ever suffice to playing more pop/shitty music like the kind of mainstream music that's always on the radio. i don't think they will ever get those fair weather fans and forget about all their true fans. if they do become huge, it will be by continuing what they've been doing that drew all of us in to become fans: being loyal to everyone who enjoys them and putting out more true, good fucking music

  • why is this not on t.v.?

  • this band will never sell out

  • this is perfect<3 lovelovelove

  • Avett Bros....Best of the Best

  • I want to see you guys so bad in concert!!! Come to the Tri-Cities, WA...PLZZZ lol

  • or Portland! or anywhere between hah

  • Only 131,783 views!?!!??! Come on humanity, I know you're smarter than that. 131,783 views, my goodness. They deserve the amount of views as justin Bieber and Lil Wayne's videos times ten....thousand.

  • absolutely love this song!!

  • 10 people aren't living the life they were given

  • There music is so powerful, It's amazing they write it from their own perspective and yet a 28 yr old single mom can relate and so many others. The Avett brothers rock my world daily.

  • I love these skinny guys~

  • That sound you hear is God tapping his foot to this song.

  • Great song. I can't make out what is going on with the left should of his guitar. Anybody know?

  • @knastera I just saw thing a few nights ago. I think it's just a carved design

  • @knastera I read that it's a skeleton with music notes for teeth. He made it in an art class in college.

  • Can't wait for the new album

  • It's the raw, pure nature of their music that defines them, but, as with all great things, refinement and a little mellowing only makes it better. In my humble opinion, this is their best, so far.

  • They grow up so fast :,)

  • Seth, Scott and the Gang....Thank You....Your music has brought me back from a very dark place....Your music reminds of what its all about..LIFE...<<<3<<

  • just learned this song on guitar.. LOVE IT.

  • anyone notice a little Jesus in this song ;) Amen Avetts... sure got a way of liftin my spirits ;)/////PLEASE do a show on MAUI!!!!!!

  • Hmmm, what a coincidence, my first name is PURPOSE....maybe he'll stick around and find out why ; ) LOL!!

  • While I agree that the production on I and Love and You was a little boring and too perfect (come on guys, it IS Rick Rubin) the musical aspects of the songs are so great. If you take the somewhat cheesy production out of the songs, they're fantastic. Anyone who has seen them live has to agree.

  • I and love and The Avett Brothers

  • i know where everyone is coming from, we do love the younger Avett, it may be better but the new is still genius, and in all honesty they deserve to be recognised.

  • ....I don't like it. Look what you did Rick Rubin!!

These guys used to play out of my stereo all the time. I couldn't get enough....I&L&U really was a downer for me.

  • @jabrusii The Avett Brothers are true artists, and must keep things fresh to make us as fans happy as well as themselves. "It's not acceptable to present only who we've been." To want the same old music day after day is cutting their creative talent short. Roll with the change my friend.

  • @jabrusii You don't like this song!? I agree that I and Love and You was a little different from their earlier stuff even though I still loved it. Regardless though this song really taps into the Avett's roots, sounds a lot like the old stuff to me.

  • The fact that this song only has 89,000 views shows the direction that music is heading, sadly. However, its good to know that there is still substantial music out here. Fantastic job Avett

  • They just het better better BEST!!! Their music is like no other, I cant get enough!!!!!! these guys are the reason I love music

  • The only thing i dont like about their music is that my speakers wont let me play it any louder.

  • No Genre needed! OMFG

  • Saw them play this last week in Greensboro. In North Carolina. Under a full moon, in a perfect fall night. Pretty, pretty, pretty good.

  • Thanks for uploading this one, it is so goooood!

Could anyone upload the other (Avettbros) CMT stuff on youtube, for allth e fans outside the USA?

  • Agree with the Rick Ruben comment. I'm digging this.

  • There is something sacred about two siblings harmonizing together...

  • amazing bridge- "it robs me blind!"

  • Had the privilege to hear this song live. Incredible.

  • sweet song, makes me smile ;)

  • @DownOnwax maybe true. But, on the other hand, the pop aspect of I and Love and You provided a gateway for many who wouldn't have heard of or gotten into the Avett Brothers otherwise. I myself had heard of them, but didn't get into them until I and Love and You. Now I've fallen even more in love with their older albums.

  • Hot damn... That's all I can say at the moment.

  • In all honesty...

Don't let Rick Rubin produce your next album. Weird to say but you are better without him Avett Brothers.

Real and RAW is why we fell in love with you in the first place. You tried to POP it out for the mainstream and it was a letdown.

I and Love and You was OK.

  • they played a high-energy live version of this song last night at the Life is Good Festival and i liked it way more than this mellower version. i think.

  • @ Aft19 I agree with Seth 100% but they have always said they would play any place that would have them. I just noticed your recent comment, I agree as well

  • @ Aft19 I agree with Seth 100% but they have always said they would play any place that would have them.

  • This is, no doubt, among their greatest songs.

  • I don't concentrate on their hair or where they are playing,I'm just completely grateful that they share their talent and time. I"m in the Carolina mountains, with my headphones run out the window while I lie on my porch at night, katy-dids and crickets in the background, and I watch the sky and let this beautiful music, performed by these beautiful people, honest and pure, so peaceful, keep me grounded and content in this hectic, unforgiving world.

  • proof there is hope for music yet

  • Pure, unrefined, and raw talent-sounds like the Avett Brothers. Sometimes I really feel like it's a privilege to listen to them.

  • sometimes you look back at older bands and wonder what it would have been like to be around when they were in their prime ... this is one of those bands you could look forward to growing with. simply amazing live

  • What a beautiful, coming of age song. The rise of bands like this gives me hope for the future of music. These guys understand music so well and are able to convey pure emotion and poetry in such a beautiful and universal appealing manner. Man these guys are great!

  • just like the old avetts! thank you! haha they are so amazing with their lyrics and beautiful music

  • as of 9/10/11, three people were never hugged as children. Wow you three must hate life....sad

  • God damn. So nice :)

  • Nice! Looking forward to next album

  • brilliance.

  • YESSSS!!!!!!

  • "sometimes I hit, sometimes it robs me blind" Are you kidding me. I hope this never ends.

  • I'm pretty sure 40,000 of these views were mine... *sigh*

  • I can love these boys forever. They have inspired me more than anything else in my entire life! Sing on Boys..Sing on! <3

  • wholesome and earnest like so many avett tunes. they make their own church.

  • #$*% thats a good song!!!!!

  • I don't care If they have gel in there hair, shave there beards, wear so much bling that they can barely stand up, paint themselves blue, or run around stage with just socks on there dicks. I don't care if they play on MTV, CMT, or BET. As long as they keep pumping out all these greats songs that I have fell in love with over the past 5 years. I don't call them rap, rock, country, or bluegrass. I just call them genius.

  • @XXGlomerXX Their

  • @XXGlomerXX No one has ever said it better.

  • Bless 'em. They're on a journey with their music. I, for one, count myself lucky they are willing to let me ride along and listen in.

  • cant stop listening to thsi song.. :D

  • this is so incredible

  • @ all you guys.....im just listening to the music....and i like it.

  • @IamAmish1 YOU'RE dumb.

  • Since when does Scott comb his hair?

Perhaps Columbia Records gave his a hair stylist in exchange for his soul.

    However, great song.

  • @jefflanolin How come every time someone signs with a label, people call them sellouts? I just don't get it!

  • @DrewRyalsByrnes Singing with a label is fine. Highly encouraged actually. It's the giant pot of hipster stew that these guys seem to have fallen into that I have a problem with.

These are guys who grew up in the hills of Carolina. Now, they look like any other jackwad from NYC. It's typical of America.

Also, just to clarify... I never mentioned the word "sellout".

  • @jefflanolin First, "in exchange for his soul" is definitely an accusation of selling out, don't kid yourself. Second, if they were trying to stir "a pot of hipster stew", they wouldn't be so eager to fall in line with the image that Columbia would like for them to implement. A hipster is one who denies mainstream culture, music, dress, etc. Fourth, most followers of the band know that the Avett's hairstyles change nearly every other day. Maybe this particular cleaner style that Scott happened

  • @DrewRyalsByrnes Nicely stated, you infer very well.

However, one clarifying point.... the "hipsters" that are trying to avoid tossing their fishing line in the mainstream culture aren't avoiding the "mainstream" at all. It seems that the "hipster" look IS the mainstream now. That's what I'm trying to get at here.

I've been a fan of these guys since the early/mid 2000's, and have seen them many times, so I'm very aware of their past looks.

By the way... you skipped "Third". Just saying.

  • @jefflanolin Maybe it was just an EXTREME coincidence that I went on just a random Avett video, and found you having the exact same discussion with someone else. Is this all that you do in your free time? You should do something more constructive. Try making some music of your own if the Avett's have betrayed you in some way.I don't really care to carry on with this conversation anymore. :)

  • @DrewRyalsByrnes I do make my own music. In fact I'm working on a song right now... It's called "Why don't YOU go make music?"

  • @jefflanolin Well here's to hoping you never make it big enough to have to sell out.

  • Comment removed

  • yes! like they were before I and Love and You...i love them :D

  • "If I live the life i'm given, then I won't be scared of death." ... Genius.

  • Seriously this is the only band in which I love every freaking song they play

  • Comment removed

  • These guys are some of the best songwriters around. I think they keep getting better and better before our eyes. Great song.

  • 2 people don't live the life their given...

  • I met these guys in person last year. They're so amazingly humble and have true love for their fans. It's good to see them looking so good. They've came so far already and the sky is the limit. Always loyal & true. So much love for these four gentlemen right here.

  • The avert brothers harmonies never cease to amaze me.

  • Just.....loveeeee. That's it. Nothing else. Just loveeeee for these men. <333

  • Ear orgasms begin at 0:25!

  • I think I have at least 100 of the 15K+ views on this video so far...

  • I love the way he says "Detroit", DE-troit, instead of de-TROIT.

  • @amhiciano It must be a Southern thing. DE-troit. Sounds normal to me.

  • "if i live the life i'm given, i won't be scared to die"

that line's hit me like no lyric ever has..

  • Iv been watching them grow since the beginning, kinda sad its not underground nomore :(

  • @MrSethwild don't worry.. cmt will NOT change these boys. they are made of sterner stuff.

  • @nittany09 Hopefully their next album is better than I And Love And You. Too much piano on that one. Rick Rubin dropped the ball on that one

  • so.....deep.....can't... handle...

  • Wait a second! That's Brandon Flowers with a beard

  • @bobcake88 You seem to be confused, sir. Brandon Flowers is Scott Avett without a beard.

  • My new favorite TAB song.

  • They're too groomed!! Seth needs more hair, Scott needs all the gel taken out of his, and so does bob. Relax with the style, guys. Otherwise- perfection

  • 1 person is afraid to die.

  • The Avett Brothers are unique, which is one reason they are so appealing. Of course they are country, as that is who they are from their roots. Just as they are folk and rock and bluegrass and everything that is great about music. Look at who they cite as influences, and you can see why they are so great...songwriters like Townes Van Zandt, Tom T. Hall, and Roger Miller. Bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Bluegrass bands like Charlie Poole and the NC Ramblers. Even pop stylists like Lionel

  • Weak artists conform to garbage. Average artists run away from it, but the great ones turn the garbage into gold.

I am thrilled that the Avetts are bringing something fresh and golden to the CMT world that has been in a rut for a long, long time.

Scott and Seth are country, not lame Nashville country, but rural blood definitely runs through their bodies & music. On this new track they really remind me of a more broadly influenced Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard (a slight "Pancho & Lefty" feel)

  • Simply the best!

  • CMT must be good

if the Avetts are here :D

  • Comment removed

  • Why'd you have to go down the CMT road man?

  • Screw CMT, Avett Brothers are not freakin country.

  • In 2006 Seth and I were discussing music and I can quote him as having said "CMT is #$^%& terrible."

  • @aft19 if you listen to him. he talks about them changing their representation. but i do agree that CMT Sucks

  • @aft19

I guess he decided to take it upon himself to make CMT better.

  • Y'all are silly, who cares if they're country or not. They had an opportunity to play music, which is what they love to do...and they did it. Why turn down a chance to gain new fans?

  • Comment removed

  • Lets just be happy they are getting recognized. I'm thrilled for them. I can't stomach CMT, but this is a great opportunity for these guys.

  • @TheBlackTentRevival oh yeah i totally agree. i wasn't making a statement or anything with that. the reason that came up was this was shortly after their first appearance on CMT, when they did Swept Away and I think Nothing Short of Thankful. I was talking about how it was great publicity for them and he graciously agreed. But also added that comment haha

  • @aft19 Gotcha, haha. Cheers!

  • @aft19 Seth is talking to these children and he's keeping it clean, he don't need those words, to say what he means.
