I have to say, I love this version and the Roxy Music version both for different reasons. I think this is one of the few cases where I totally dig both versions and listen to them both frequently. People are always trying to assert that Roxy's is better, but I find that boring. I'm just thankful there are two ways to experience this masterful tune.
IMO one of the best songs the maniacs ever did because you didn't have self righteous natalie singing it, nor preaching about some self-righteous PC cause. pluse the new singer had a sexier voice.
@jimvrpaze Yeah, there is something sexy there in her voice. Now I got to go back and listen to something from Merchant and see if she had any sex appeal in her voice or not, cannot remember.
The Maniacs gave it a good try. This is a beautiful version of this song. But for someone like me who was deeply affected by the band's earlier work, this isn't the Maniacs. The band without Natalie is still very talented, but they're not the same. How I miss them and the impact their music had upon my soul.
Well, I feel silly. I thought this was Merchant but in retrospect I don't know why - she does have a distinctive voice. Thank you for pointing out this is the band without her - I don't know all the backstory. etc.... but like to keep it straight.
"More Than This" actually is a 1982 single by British art rock band Roxy Music. In 1997, a cover performed by 10000 Maniacs with Mary Ramsey on vocals became a US hit when it reached 25 on US Hot 100. They released this single from "Love Among the Ruins" Album on Geffen Records... (from wikipedia)
Thank you so much for uploading this versión, I love Mary Ramsey, her voice and skin color, the original version maybe a masterpiece but this one is my favorite.
It is the drums or drummer that is the problem. He is just going through the motions. You can tell no one cares about this song. [She could use some sun, too.]
no one should be trying to do a song that bryan ferry did so well-i saw him at a cinverted roller skating palace/concert hall when i was about 13 and he was fantastic-leave some songs alone please
THAT'S NOT NATALIE!! HOW DARE YOU? Why does it say 10,000 Maniacs and list Natalie in the tags. This woman's caterwalling makes me want to stab pencils in my ears! What have you done with NATALIE MERChANT??
10K Maniacs had a lot of potential right after Natalie left in the mid 90's. Mary Ramsey carved out her own style within the group yet you can hear traces where she tries to mimic Natalie. The first 25 seconds of the song there are notes that sound a lot like Natalie. I did see them live in 1997 and Mary definitely tried to sound like Natalie on many of their signature songs. Not bad really.
when i was in jail i thought the song was "there is nothing else" and i wrote it in big fancy letters on the wall and drew an awsome mural around it...wish i could have taken a picture of it...i drew a tree and the roots were an island and a guy was fishing off the edge...the words were in the roots...
dont beat mary over the head because shes not natalie! this song was as much a hit for 10000 maniacs as any others. dont get me wrong I love the work natalie did with and without this band, but this song is just beautiful (so stop hating)
Good 'ol Youtube! Used to be that we had to sit with our eyes glued to the TV set to catch this video or any others we wanted to see. Now we can view them whenever we want!
I was wondering if the Maniacs ever did a version of this with Natalie Merchant. Mary Ramsey is decent but she sounds like she could be swapped out for any other decent singer like an interchangeable part. Natalie Merchant is a totally unique talent.
I mostly agree with you. With Merchant both the lyrics and music were good, now just the music is good, although Ramsey's voice is nice. Ramsey played with Maniacs for years (you can see her in the liner notes for "Unplugged") and she has done projects with the former (and back again) John Lombardo (I think Ramsey and Lombardo came as a package deal).
Thanks for posting the REAL 10, 000 Manicas version of this! (not the disco version the record company forced on them). Mary Ramsey is great, unlike Natalie Merchant Mary can actually sing in tune. Natalie has a unique voice but to hear that people prefer her to a much better singer is puzzling. Give her a chance. Check out The Earth Pressed Flat or any of the 4 John & Mary CDs!
I'm happy that the Bryan Ferry version was done in the 80's, otherwise we'd of seen a mocha latte pirate circus post modernist mid 90's version which would of been craptacular. Oops.
