Too bad you landed heading northwest over Victoria Harbor. rather than from the northwest between the high rise apartment buildings. I came in that way at dusk one time and, I swear, I could see the pattern on the dishes the residents were eating their dinner from.
Your video brought my memory back to 1978, when I was a 5-year old small kid. My family couldn't afford traveling, so I always fantazied how it felt for flying. Thanks God, I can do that in the past 15+ years, but never been in a DC-8. Surprised to see the window is real huge, compare to those pigeon holes in other aircrafts.
So, have you been to HK again since 1978? Huge changes, and too bad, the Kai Tak airport where you landed at that time is no longer existing.
Good eye, it is out of Osaka. I'd like to try to find out where that lake is that we flew over. I haven't been back to Osaka since then, I'm sure it looks much different now.
@bigdogduke123456 well you're in luck sort of... there's a kid or someone who took a video recently about 9-15 mins long and takes an excellent video flying past Kansai and ALL of Osaka and eventually landing into Itami..I'm am sure that lake is there somewhere..unless of course, the innovative japanese 'landfilled' and it's now prime downtown Osaka real estate! Just youtube search 'arriving in Osaka'..thanks again for the great vid
What was the configuration? Was it 2/2 on each row? 3/3 on each row? sorry im excited cos i cant find seat maps of the DC8 anywhere n my grandma who was a flight attendant on a Dc-8 in the 60s forgot the configuartion, all she remembered was that there was only 1 aisle.
It was 3/3 in coach, I think 2/2 in first class. Airplanes had a lot more legroom back in those days, none of the seat backs hitting your knees like today.
I took the 8mm movie film to Seattle Motion Pictures and they transferred it to video for me. Great store, very quirky, been there since the 1960s at least.
Oh the memories of travelling on REAL jets (707, DC-8, 747 200's, et al); just before deregulation. While you were enjoying the West Pac (I would be there later courtesy of the Navy) the summer of 1978, I was down in Quito Ecuador visiting my relatives for the next five weeks. We flew on Braniff DC-8's down there and back with stops in Columbia, and Panama.
That's an early Airbus, A300 or something. If you can imagine back to 1978, there were still a lot of 707s and DC-8s, and the widebody trijets and 747-200s were the marvels of the sky. I seem to remember Boeing officially announcing the 757 and 767 programs publicly for the first time. They were still well off in the future.
P.S... Is the kid you? Probably I am about the same age. Was born in 1970. This little movie REALLY REALLY brings back lots of memories...like just looking at DC-8's Engines, wing from the window..excitement..! Wow man...
Again, thank you very much for posting this and thank your father for filming this.
You can see YS-11 too! I am from Japan and I used to fly all these crafts! JAL DC-8 , YS-11 when I was a kid and this film brings me back a lot of memories!
Hi, thanks for the comments. I'm glad that these movies are able to bring back such good memories for people. They certainly do for me. It really was a different era back then. Yes, one of the kids in the movies is me, the others are my brothers and my parents. How exciting it was back then to travel on a jetliner. I'm so glad my dad had a passion for films back in those days. Not many people shot movies back then, so scenes like these are pretty special.
The windows on the Douglas jets were fantastic compared to the boeing and airbus planes. From the outside the large windows gave the appearance of the airplane having fewer seats, but that's because there was only about one window per row. This wasn't first class, this was coach flying in the 1970's, a huge difference from the cattle car environment today. Of course tickets probably cost about 10 times more than they do now when you take inflation into account.
The size of the windows are huge! Beautiful video, thanks for the effort

Yeah, it inspired me to build a 1/144 Thai DC-10 model when I got home using the microscale decals of the 1970s.

What a beautiful plane the DC-8 is. Loved the huge passenger windows...so unlike todays sad airliners. Thanks for posting.
