Except for an aunt and an older cousin, I'm the oldest on my side of the family, even though I'm only 61. I have kids and grandkids and will have 2 great-grandkids by December. The bum gets upset because while sleeping he was not exposed to his brutal reality, and he wishes the man never would have woken him up because of this. The "Almost Home" part is obviously interpreted that if the man had never woken the bum, the bum would have froze to death, and the bum prefers this alternative because he'll be "home", not living on the street.
