  • Acid men, it was so good on those days.

  • I want an Afro Haircut like that

  • i have to say that brewer is definatly in the top 10 of the greatest drummers that ever played a drum, i've rocked to gfr for over 40yrs WOW i am getting old LMFAO PEACE ALL

  • Hey. Michigan is the home of "Rock and Roll" if you ask me......Only song that came close to what GFR puts out was "Queens" We will rock You............The stadium thundered and bounced with the drum beating.

  • Excellent drumming on this songs as was everything Brewer did. Notice this was before the era of drum kits being raised off the floor. Back in these days drummers were on the floor with the rest of the band.

  • I LIKE IT......greetings from italy

  • saw them back in august and they played a variation of this, very very cool :)

  • GFR = power !!!!

  • This is too insane!

  • Damn,,,,now I need a drink and a cigarette

  • Don Brewer may not be the GREATEST drummer of all time, but he's clearly INTO IT and that's what really counts. Love this clip!

  • @jaybone23 Don Brewer for me is more my kind of drummer than John Bonham from Led Zep. I mean a drummer who plays funky, it's rare, especially today. I don't care if he's not a perfect drummer. Anyways, who drummed that fast in 1970? Joey Jordison wasn't born yet, and Lars Urlich was 10 around the time of this show. Metal music is way more limited in drum playing than what you think. Sure you can be the fastest and double-bass drum like a king, but for variety and originality, metal bands suck.

  • @sinning1966 Yeah, I couldn't agree more. Having fooled around with the drums a little myself, I discovered that it's MUCH easier to play a fast groove than a mid or slow tempo groove. I mean, while I love Neil Peart for instance, one doesn't have to have the same kind of skills he does to be a GREAT drummer. It's whatever services the music in the best way. And Ringo Starr was in one of the most important, influential bands OF ALL TIME and he's no Neil Peart or Dave Lombardo!

  • @jaybone23 To me, Ringo Starr is an innovator in the drum progression. "To let youself go, rather than following a same pattern..." is the lesson I got in my head since I started my drum courses at 14 and it still works for me today (and I don't play often anymore, but when I get a chance, it's that key that let me be freestyle in playing music).

  • GFR's music will live forever!!!!!!!

  • i have GFR live in tokyo 1974 on dvd if anyone wants to buy it message me : )

  • Don is so much fun to watch. I listened to them on the way to work, all day long while I was at work, and on the way home. Love these guys.

  • one of the best Fro's in rock!!

  • FUNKING GREAT! Best American Band EVER!

  • man at 1:50 brewer destroys those drums haha...this is awesome...i'm a 26 year old funk fan thanks to my dad!!! these guys were truly awesome! i only wish i had been alive back then to see them!!! thanks for posting!

  • This is what many people think Rock & Roll is all about. GFRxR was simple and they were crude and they rocked with a vengeance without pretense or apology. Their live show was 100% energy. It was raw and it was real. For all us who remember, nothing can replace it.

  • @PackedFunk completely agree

  • one of the best rockband ever

  • Craig Frost on keys...

  • These guys were having such a great time with this jam!

Why aren't these guys in the R and R Hall of Fame?

Grand Funk was so great together! (and how about Mark on the drums? Not bad!

  • Idon't know about having Wakeman and Emerson stepping off.

Frost was underrated for sure but they're different styles, more like Jon Lord or Ken Hensley. Don't get me wrong Frost went on to play with Bob Seger, but don't compare a Ferrari with a Porsche, they're both great and so different.

By the way, Farner wasn't that bad either. ROCK ONNNNN

    b

  • FRO POWER, BABY!!

  • Don Brewer is in his mid 60's. I've stood right next to him at sound check, and he STILL hits so hard it makes my eyes bounce. Whoeever said it is right...Craig's awesome keyboard parts were grafted into "Black Licorice"

Craig was waaaay underrated and was never heard on record like this...step off Keith Emerson & Rick Wakeman, I say !

  • don is 61 years old.

  • unreal!

  • WOW!!!

  • Love the way the fro flows!

  • As an artist and creator that saw all levels of the playing field, Mark Farner's musical diversity is a matter of public record. Rolling Stone Magazine ranked "I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home" as one of the top ten classic songs of all time. Way to go Mark!!! Further proof this great American Band can not be ignored any longer!!!

  • they were so talented. I did not know Mark could play drums, I knew about the keyboards and guitar. They are awesome.

  • Grand Funk kickin' ass & taking names.

  • oh yes Lord!!

  • WoW!!!! Green day who; foo fighters who; coldplay who; jonas brothers WHO!!!

  • I am sure the fro provides special drumming powers!!!!

  • excelente grand funk railroad! imprescindible

  • I was there! 3rd row front. :)

  • gfr is one of the greatest bands there is and ever will be

  • @lorapop1 I hear you my brother

  • I am so addicted to this. Best drummin' ever!!! How I wish I had been there to see this live.

  • You just gotta love this! Don and Mark trading it beat for beat! *S* The boys just went all out on stage, gave it everything they had. That and the fact that they were a MASSIVELY talented group of guys gave them the edge over slicker/smoother acts. They were RAW! Just the way we liked it.

Plus the quality of the music they made, including lyrics, and the double threat of vocal talent w/ Mark and Don, well you got the best of everything!

  • Holy Moly, I have never heard this tune before, AMAZING.

    Great post,

    High Energy!

    Thanks,

  • Don Brewer is the most underrated classic rock drummer of alltime

  • I agree

  • @mattyp3400 ,,,,,Hell yes he was.

  • This is the beauty of YouTube. I saw this video as part of Don Kirschners Rock Concert back in '72 or so, and being the GFR fan that I am, always remembered this previously unreleased tune . Seeing it for the first time since then..... HOLY SHIT. These guys set such a precendent.

  • Why wasn't this tune ever released? I reminds me a little bit of Frankenstein.

Why did the guys take all the tunes on this show a break neck tempos?

  • I've always called GFRxR a performance vehicle. This entire concert proves what I say. The fact remains that no band in the world could follow GFRxR, or they'd suffer the consequences (booed off-stage).

  • The lightning quick drumming, the crisp organ, wow! Never heard any rock group pump out this kinda music

  • wow. Can you just FEEL the energy. Awesome stuff here.

  • Don never ceases to amazes me what he can do on such a simple set of drums..incomprehensible!!!!

  • Craig Frost was the man for GFR on the keyboards,no doubt!

  • Wow! Listen to this without the visual. Close your eyes and just zone in on the music. AWESOME! Become one with the music!

  • I am still addicted to this!

  • FUNK YEAH!!!!!!

  • Tribal!

  • packed...thnx buddy for this one. i never heard this one before.

  • Plenty of 'Cowbell" in this one!

  • Yea sir!

  • Behold the Don Brewer show!!!!!!

  • son lo maximo

  • excelente, son fabulosos

  • Fro Power!!

  • Bands of today take heed! This is one of several talents that are missing with current bands. I have been to many concerts over the past several years and only saw one drum solo, lasting about 1 to 2 minutes. GFR supreme MUSICIANS in ALL aspects!!!

  • wow what passions!!!!!!!

when i was younger we used to play grand funk!

  • girlo... your words are true and sharp as any sword. And may i add todays music is predictable and utterly borringggggg

  • so true

  • fuckin' awesome! it seems like some kind of ritual..... rock and roll ritual!!!

  • Grand Funk made you want to jump up and dance as opposed to standing there marveling at the bands technical skills. They seemed to fuse pop, soul and R&B into rock & roll and make it funky! My favorite band for just pure fun in the 60's and 70's

  • I am addicted to this video, I can't get enough drummin'.

  • Don Brewer at 1:50!!!! Good God look at his hands!!!!!!!

  • No one ever attacked a set of drumbs like Don Brewer.

  • Praise the Lord!

  • WOW! Whats the story behind this tune?? Really groove stuff!

  • I didn't know this song existed either. This is the first song I've heard that featured Craig Frost. Mark Farner had a B-3 also and I've saved some other vids from this show but I didn't kow Frost was this good. I have already signed the petition to get GFR into the hall of fame and I urge you all to get with it. When you watch the footage of all the legal trouble they had and the fact that they're still close friends will make you appreciate them more. Go vote. And enjoy the music. Rock on.

  • Hands down, Grand Funk Railroad from 69-72 was and is still the greatest American band ever!!!

  • I have the fever! I need more cow bell!!!! Crap, I didn't know this song even existed!

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY & GOD BLESS MARK FARNER

  • Please people, we need more signatures on our petition. Just click the "blue link" above & you are there. It only takes seconds to sign it. Thanks everyone.

  • Mark Farner = talent talent talent. This guy can do it all!

  • More COWBELL Mel!

  • holy shit! gfr is killer!

  • Goodjob Craig Frost!

  • the fucking kick ass yeaa !! they rock!!!

  • Mark, Don and Mel have to look back at these videos and proudly say, "We kicked ass!! We didn't take a back seat to anyone!"

  • Love the video! If you want to buy GFR CD's go to Amazon. I got nothing in it but just to help spread the funk!

  • If there is a better front-man than Mark Farner, I haven't seen him. His song writing, awesome voice, multi-instruments,... He is a FORCE!!

  • I respect GFR immensely, but Jimi Hendrix is equal to, if not more powerful, than Farner as a frontman. Rock and Roll heaven would be Hendrix playing lead with Don and Mel and Mark on Vocal/Rhythm.

  • More cowbell!

  • I didn't realize how good Craig Frost is until I saw this. GFR rules.

  • So often in life, true genius in artform is NOT recognized until a person has passed. Someone once said, "Something is not considered great until it absolutely, positively, CAN NOT be ignored."

I know that GFRxR was not everyone's cup of tea. That being said, it can not be ignored what 3 average guys from Flint, Michigan acomplished from '69-'76.

Too many albums were sold, too many concert tickets were sold, & too many artists were influinced by these 3 guys for R&RHOF to ignore them.

  • ROCK ON! Thanx for putting these videos of GFR on! They CANNOT be ignored!!! Supreme musical geniuses.

  • Don is one of the best!

  • Mark Farner, this cat could play anything. Reminds me of the late Brian Jones.

  • F-ing awesome!Bravo all the way man,dig!!!!

  • wonderful

  • OMG, how I miss those days of great music. Don Brewer extraordinaire!

  • Long live Grand Funk

  • bass player is mel

  • wow...Craig is such and amazing musician...:)

  • i agree long live craig frost. and micheal (i think thats te bassists name i cant member) can sure jam on that cowbell. lol

  • Actually the bassist's name is Mel Shacher xD jeje...lol, and he sure rocked the hell out of that cowbell

  • Long live rock and roll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Well over 900,000 views on our Grand Funk Railroad videos. It will be over 1 million soon. Everyone don't forget to sign our petition above in video's description. Just click the blue link & you are there. Thanks to all you Funk Fans!

  • yeah cougar1233 and the "want freedom" song shows it too! also from the survival album...at the end I think every song that mark sing is gold, in these days is very difficult to find someone with this kind of voice!

  • Over 850,000 views on our GFRxR videos now! Support "The People's Band" & sign our petition in his video's description! Read "About This Video" & you'll see the blue link to click.

  • I didn't realized the first time I heard this AMAZING song... but now I see it as a direct inspiration for certain moments of FAITH NO MORE's KING FOR A DAY!!! The drums, the hyper-cut guitar riffs, the keyboards... mmmmmh. What do you think?

  • My first hit on this jam was that it was the precursor to Black Licorice

  • One of my favorite songs that really shows off Mark Farner's one of a kind voice, is "comfort me". on the survival album. Nobody sings as good as Mark. Even Don Henley from the Eagles, Chuck Negron from Three dog Night, and Steve Mariott from Humble Pie, aren't as good as Mark Farner, and they have fantastic voices. Mark had more power, more range, and better vibratto, then all of them!

  • This band rocked harder than any band in history! Prove me wrong, I dare you! Grand Funk Railroad Live was The Ultimate, bar NONE!!! The Establishment hated this band & thanks to Jann Wenner of Rolling Stone, Mark, Don, & Mel still pay the price for not fitting "The Preconceived Image" of what a Rock Band should be. The People Should Speak!!! Support our petition in video's description.

  • I hate jazz and brass, but shit, when Grand Funk does it... I love it!!

  • WANTED! used time machine in good shape, Will pay with smoke

  • Over 700,000 views on our Grand Funk Railroad videos now! Thanks everyone & help support our petition in video's description! T.J.

  • Ya Grate music :)

  • I just posted some Chicago / Farner videos. Sin's A Good Man's Brother is GREAT!!!!

  • ...loved it Packed! I don't know how you do it, but keep that FUNKY stuff comin' brother!

  • fucking brewer just blows me away everytime i hear him,i forgot how much this song jams. Please dump Craig frost, nothing personnel he just makes them sound like a night club band.

  • Thanks for saying something that I didn't want to KBJ...as far as I'm concerned, Frost never added anything to this band. Sorry Craig.

  • Oh guys. How can you say this? Frost DID add to the band. He is talented!! However, I liked them better too, as a POWER TRIO!!

(69 - 71) But Frost did add SOMETHING!

    Still love ya guys!

  • ...but does FUNK MOMMA agree with you?

  • ha ha. Probably not! I am a DIE HARD Grand Funk fan. But I liked Craig in the band, too. The trio WAS the best. The early years.. THE BEST. How are ya doing with the "Bucks?"

    Keep on Funkin on, fattdaddy!

  • ...Been authorized 100,000 bucks, but the program will begin sometime in the first week of January. A BUCK A SIGNATURE for signing the petition. Maybe FUNK MOMMA and her friends can do a door to door drive and earn some bucks! Could she use a few extra BUCKS?

  • Told my Funk Momma about the "bucks" thing. She said...."Oh that is funny." Yes, she could use a few extra bucks. Me, too!

Whatever it takes to get it done! This is THE YEAR! (working on 2 more signatures this week)

  • craig frost was amazing in GFR. i love'em as a power trio but i like the frost era better.

call me a freak but the born to die album and good sing good playin' are my favourites

  • You're NOT a freak. Everyone has their opinion, making yours not right...NOR wrong. Craig Frost DID add some good sound to this already great band. Keep funkin' on, zeets93!!

  • zeets93...really? GFRxR defind the day back in 69,70,71 &72. After that, they kinda lost me as I felt they went the 'bubblegum route.' Flight of The Phoenix was the last album I bought back then. Just yesterday I bought their Born To Die album and couldn't get through the first minute of each song. I dunno maybe I'm stuck on LOUD!

  • lol.....i think all the girls in the world is their most "pop" album and it's my least favourite. i love the early stuff too...survival and e pluribus being favourites. but i just prefer the stuff with craig frost more. give born to die a few listens there is some amazing stuff on there.

  • The New York Daily News' Nationwide Readers' Poll for 1971.

Tens of thousands of votes were cast from every state in the nation. Whe the final score was tallied, Grand Funk Railroad had garnered a whopping 75% of the total vote as "Best Rock Group In The U.S." Left to split up the remaining 25% were: 2 Creedence Clearwater, 3. Jackson Five, 4. Led Zeppelin, 5. Three Dog Night, 6. The Who, 7. Sly, 8. Santana, 9.Chicago, and 10.Ten Years After!

  • Let me get this straight. Is The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame calling tens of thousands of us GFRxR Fans back in 1971 (75% of this scientific poll) idiots by ignoring our band??? I feel a put-down here somehow!!!

  • I feel it too Packed! And I'm not taking it ANYMORE! FIGHT FIRE WITH TIRE!

  • Brother fattdaddy tell it like it is Bro.

  • GFRxR was a real people's band. Rejected by critics, GFRxR still became the first band to sell 10 consecutive platinum albums. They broke The Beatles ticket sales record at New York's Shea Stadium in '71. Despite all this success, they remain ignored by The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. Please sign the petition above to induct Mark Farner & GFRxR now!

  • ...scroll UP to "ABOUT THIS VIDEO" click on the 'blue more' and you're there. Please sign the petition now, it'll only take a minute. We appreciate your support FUNK FANS. Thanks

    P E R I O D !!!!!!!!! FUNK ON!

  • I have to agree - It's nice that they are playing around but without Mark, It's like baking a cake and forgetting to put the sugar in.

  • I am still waiting for more Grand Funk out of you! I really enjoy watching you JAM!!!!

  • Man Don is so full of joy drumming, you don't even see that kind of enthusiasm today(Being 52 now,I wish some of that energy reflect back on me!).Grand Funk is one of a kind of a band and one of the first to lead me into hard rock/heavy/progressive metal since 1969 and still listening!

  • True Dat Zorack10! I too, at 52 wish some of that energy reflected back upon my ass! But I'll tell ya...by the time I get to side 2 of the RED ALBUM...this ole boy is moving!!!! Tell me Zorack10, did you get a chance to send a tire to Jann Wenner of Rolling Stone?

  • I've been a Grand Funk fan since 1969 but even today in 2007 it's like I've just discovered Mark, Don, Mel & Craig for the first time,

So proud to be part of the Grand Funk movement!

  • Donny Brewer really kicks ass here. Fattdaddy is right, GFRxR always ruled on drum solos. Is there any instument Mark Farner can't play??? Plenty of "cowbell" here for sure! (Some of my thoughts about this rare performance)

  • ....."MORE COWBELL!" .....OH YEAH!!!!

What song comes to mind after 7 (dinks) on the cowbell? For me its MISSISSIPPI QUEEN.

    ....you know what I mean?

  • Great song fellow Funk Cousin. Saw Mountain live also back in the day.Great show but nothing like our Funk brothers.

  • Spectacular!!! The band was Spectacular! I turned all my girl friends into Funk fans eventually....that's after they thought I was so weird for preferring Mark Farner over Donnie Osmond and Davey Jones!!!

This footage is amazing...Craig Frost is still great too! With Seger he shined up the Silver Bullet just fine! He turned up in the audience for a Toledo Farner gig too! Nice guy.

Long live the original Funk vibes!

  • GFRxR have 33 gold & platinum ALBUMS earned & many gold & platinum singles. They also still hold many ticket sales records. NOT being recognized by The R&R HOF is a bitch-slap to every fan who bought one of those albums or concert tickets.

Sign the petition in this video's description.

  • Everyone join the Grand Funk Railroad movement. Sign the petition in this video's description.

  • annaleee69, I brought the GRAND FUNK MOVEMENT to all my neighbors by playing INSIDE LOOKING OUT off of the 'Live Album' on 10. One of them called the cops. FUNK ON PEOPLE!!!!

  • ATTENTION....Everyone who reads this. Please sign this petition. Tell your friends about this band. Share a video clip to let them witness the best "ass kickin" band of all time. Got 1612 signatures so far. Come on, we need more!!

  • GFRxR created their own genre of music & The People reacted enormously by becoming the first band to sell 10 consecutive platinum albums & breaking ticket sales records wherever they played. fattdaddy3755, WALNUTS52, & myself are trying to correct the fact that GFRxR are ignored by The R&R HOF. Please join us by signing the petition in this video's description. Thanks everyone!

  • Drum solo's were a big part of a rock concert back in the day. GRAND FUNK RAILROAD always ruled on drum solo's. Funk On People!

  • HEAVY METAL Documentary Movie Part1 of 12

Search YouTube for the above documentary on how GFRxR started what is known today as "Heavy Metal"!!

  • I just wish this MSG TV show would be on DVD. That would br great. What do you think?

  • Right-on bignsexy7. This MSG concert & The Legendary Shea Stadium concert would be a great release on DVD. The Shea Concert was the peak of The Power Trio years & this MSG was a great quartet concert. Hear that Capital Records??

  • In 72 there were two shows in NY, this show at MSG and a show I went to on Long Island @ Vets Uniondale on 12/14. So you can say I saw this show live. It was a great show. And I watched this show @ MSG on Ch 7 ABC TV In concert. Went on to see GFR and Mark a doz. more times. Reunion show was great too..........

  • GFRxR were dogged about everything they did, the way they looked, their attitude, even some critics called their instruments "junk". They were told their songs would not be played on the radio if they were longer than 3 minutes. GFRxR were black-balled by "the establishment" through music critics. This is also why they are not in R&R HOF today. Help me right this wrong. Everyone sign the online petition in this video's description. Thanks everyone.

  • Donny Brewer kicks ass!

  • Don Brewer-great drummer!

  • Two Words:

    Don Fuckin' Brewer!

  • Craig Frost is Fantastic! The whole group is great. I never heard this before and I thought I knew every song they ever did. I love it! You can tell that Mark, Don, Mel, and Craig put every once of energy they had into playing this tune! What a classic!

  • Right cougar1233. GFRxR gave 110% & that is part of the Mystique of this band. Rare performance here.

  • the most unearthly drummer ever! pure rock'n roll dynamite! thanx for this great footage!

  • Plenty of cowbell in this video!

  • Ha, right on guymath. I thought the same thing!
