  • leraquendee@valinor:~/Downloads$ sudo rm -rf /

    [sudo] password for leraquendee:

    safe-rm: skipping /

    leraquendee@valinor:~/Downloads$

    Power of safe-rm.

  • i cant understund it! it SO? eazy to distroy it? then every program can distroy your system, and it does not need have root pas or be a virus!

  • dont know about OS X but today some distros only give you:

rm: cannot remove root directory '/'

including signed in as root :/

  • @farlensia

    1. Go to Terminal

    2. Type ~./Trash

    3. Hit Enter

    4. Type sudo rm -rf

    5. Press space then drag the file you want to permanently delete into Terminal

    6. Press Enter

Your file has been permanently deleted.

  • no offense but your specs are shitty, how much did you pay for this? $2500 ???

  • @KrunalPking Man, this is a two year old video. It costed 1000.

  • Would be interessting to start "rm" in a Screen-Session, so it isn't killed, when Terminal.app ends it self. (screen sudo rm -rf /)

  • @TehSRMNs You are aware that using screen recording software would have not worked because it would have been erased, right? And even if it wasn't, the reboot sequence would not have been captured.

  • is that virtual Mac OS X or real Mac OS X?

  • The leopard is dead.... :)

  • Is there a way to use this command line without deleting OS X? Thanks

  • Buy something better next time :D

  • That's one command I DON'T want to remember!

  • @admorphit You actually SHOULD remember it, so you don't use it :P

  • I expect some sort of dramatic explosion after that verbose boot

  • WHY?

  • To make room for Windows 7.

  • Now you can get a real computer and throw away that toy you were using.

  • now you can put your MacBook in the Trash..

  • LMFAO, that was a HACKINTOSH

  • @sodalover477 LOL!

  • Epic music!

  • what is this for?

  • Entertainment.

  • @Tuoder A reason to throw away a computer xD

  • Sure... jerk

  • OS X is not Linux at all. It is based on BSD and Mach and includes a lot of NextSTEP. Linux came after BSD.

OS X is UNIX certified, so it can also use the UNIX name, which currently no Linux distribution can do.

  • @Stupendoussteve

True however Apple made a Linux distribution called MKLinux that also used Mach. I believe my dates are correct ...

    NeXTstep 1989

    mkLinux 1996

    OSX 2001

BSD is not Linux "true" , but PC-BSD look just like KDE Linux ... Most of BSD desktop environment look just like Linux... I think this is why people mix up the two, because BSD uses the same desktop environment as Linux. BSD also has to use the Linux Flash Player as well.

I run BSD inside of Linux ...

  • Good point, but i didnt have my install discs, either way im good now... thx

  • if i run this command, will i be able to reinstall mac osx using the discs?

  • ye, but whay would you wanna do this ?

all you need to do to reinstall is put in the system install disc , restart the machine holding down the 'c' key while it starts up. then you choose what to do, which if you did this, I personally would zero out the disc ( using the disk utility that comes with the install discs -under security options) then do a reinstall .

    p

  • This is pretty much the most useful thing you can do with a Mac

  • This will swipe everything. You can do a FULL reinstall by inserting the disk and holding down "c" while you reboot. You may have to re-partition and re-format your Internal Hard Drive though. Good Luck

  • tis well make ur mac a lot faster

  • that will kill it

  • Comment removed

  • what mac is it

  • duh u didnt delete the MFT .. it will still want to boot -_- nubs

  • Comment removed

  • Did it keep rebooting by itself?

  • exploit + netcat reverse shell + hash + rainbowtable + sudo rm -fr / = Success!! :D

  • i loved this video, i always wonder what would happen if you where to d that,

oh, can you also do a video on what would happen if you where to enter single user mode, mount the HD and enter " rm -rf / "

i would love to also see what happens when someone does that,

    GREAT VIDEO!!!

  • what happens if you do it at the apple store

  • haha, you should try it and let us know what happens

  • good luck guessing their password

  • Why would you want to kill your own computer?

  • because it's fun. Double Dare your friend's to crash a Apple Store iMac!

  • "Dare your friend's to crash a Apple Store iMac"

    Spelling...sigh

  • troll

  • Spelling

  • Stop commenting on my video's or I might have to block you. Actually I will

  • YOUR ( <--- ) videos?

What a Catweazle... he doesn't even know that blocking only helps for videos of your own channel hehehehe

  • hahahaha n00b.

  • on Linux does it get as far as to wipe the harddrive?

  • Yes. It also goes deleted everything in Mac OS 10.4.

  • mac got pwned, that would be great if you took it back and were like "It got a virus"

  • lol if he saved the command as a terminal script, disguised it as a "kool app or funny pic" icon, sent it to someone and he opens it.........

i wouldnt do it but i'm saying it's a good virus

  • lol, that would be funny but it wouldn't really work because it would open up a terminal with the command type in and asking for the passwd. The user would spot it before anything could be done.

  • and THAT is why I own a mac :)

  • hrhr Linux does this 2 ;)

  • yep, thats because OS X and Linux both are based off UNIX.

  • @ipodguru22 not quite. OSX is based off of BSD, which is a Unix OS. Linux was made to mimic the features and functionality of Unix, but it is not actually Unix. It is hard to tell the difference though, and that means Linus, the creator of Linux, and all developers up until this day, did a good job mimicking Unix.

  • and what exactly is the point of that??

  • now if only i could figure out a way to turn this command into a virus, mwahahhaha.

  • Read the description people before whining about what happened

  • lol mac os x terminal look's like a Matrix xD

  • thanks for the unnecessary tip, you geeks are too smart for your own good, messing with root/sudo

    30 minutes for all that?

its allot easier to just install the OS DVD boot from that and use Disk Utility if you want to trash your hard drive

P.S. if you run Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro 4 once in a while you would never have to trash an OS

or try the free/cheaper ones out there like System Optimizer or OnyX

  • The purpose of these rm -rf videos on youtube is just to document what it actually looks like. Noone does this as part of a reinstall procedure. It's a waste of time ;)

  • Finally someone who gets it. Invoking sudo rm -frv in pointless, but it is kind of fun to see your *nix based OS swallow itself into oblivion.

  • For those that 'don't get it', I've updated the video notes to better explain what's happening. Peace.

  • @dell1032 whats the song artist and name?

    Please Reply :)

  • @dell1032 whats the song artist and name?

    Please Reply :)

  • what happened i dont get it

  • i don't understand.

  • is that your laptop screwed??

  • switching back to tiger? :)

  • Actually I am, but only on the stock hard drive that came with my laptop. My primary hard drive still has Leopard installed.

  • wow! That is pretty neat. I assume this command would work on linux as well.( mac OSX is unix like)
