  • 2:42 MUST HIT GONG

  • AIR DRUMING IS FOR BITCHES!!!

  • A giant gong, because why the fuck not!

  • I love this song, I love this band, I love this drummer, he is so natural and flamboyant, amazing talent

  • @bitphr3ak Had it. My point proven...again. Why would I sit through 2 mins of something I dont want to hear to get to something I can hear all of one click away? and @snaredrum110 Danny's not quite Peart yet and I doubt very seriously you are all that.

  • this is not a good version to watch. you're just listenening to the album track--NOT WHAT YOU SEE!! Dont be fooled!! There is another vid with the whole piece that you can actually hear the live drums on

  • @billybreeze1 Man, u blind? Read the discription or watch the whole vid then write shit.

  • @paul12349 not writing shit--stating opinion...and fact. The first run through you only hear tracked drums and it especially shows up at the end. I turned off after that, osrry. Since there IS another, less-watched version of THE SAME SESSION with true audio. And an interview.. .. .. Man

  • @billybreeze1 In Europe people say that some americans are exceptionally stupid. And i think its true now. You think why to fuck did i wrote in the title that this is ALBUM and ORIGINAL LIVE version? And why did i wrote to 'spot 10 differences' in discription? As there is lots of clean verions of this solo i wanted to compare it with album version. Can your small brain accept that or not?

  • @paul12349 no you self-absorb chub-sucker, I guess i can't. So please be felt free to go fuck yourself

  • @billybreeze1 That's your problem, not mine. And please - don't tell me that I am self absorbed, when u can't even understend that there might be some variations. Look at the comments - you are making fools of those people who wrote them. You really think that they don't know what they are hearing? Im out of this conversation, get some brains grow up or die.

  • @paul12349 ha ha ha i loved that whole conversation.... that billy guy is a moron! ha ha ha

  • @paul12349 It's write not wrote.

  • @billybreeze1 - ROFL...so enlighten us....what happens at 2:00 ??

    Get it yet?

  • @billybreeze1 I've seen it but where the fuck did it go?? Can't seem to find it.

  • Pretty sure i jizzed myself at 0:43.

  • @MISTERLOLCRACKERS yeeah. and i queefd.

  • goddamn...there is no better...

  • at last!!! 2 top comments that are actually funny and deserve their place as top comments :D

  • err wtf this audio track is totally wrong

  • @ArcaneMagei its a double track comparing album vs this solo

  • the gong hit is the most important part of the song

  • This is the reason why ppl shoudnt fight about the best drummer. I like Danny and Mike Portnoy. Not cause theyre fast, but they complete the bands music.

  • best part is when he hits the tam tam at 0:44...so epic

  • @sixstrinngmunky And doesn't even miss a beat. Hysterical.

  • llege aca por mi hermano XD

  • THIS IS 100% ORGASM !!!!

  • Amazing! He makes it look so easy...

  • the gong hit completes my life.

  • i'm pissed...my speakers wont go any louder

  • The standard is set!!!! Danny the man Carey

  • @jtnoodle by mistakes I'm referring to the information of the video where it states the sound doesn't sync with the picture.

  • hes not making mistakes... it would be lame if he had everything memorized and just played it with no meaning what so ever. thats why he switches it up.

  • he has so much power, he could have knocked that gong out of its place if he wanted to. He just wanted to keep the video clean for kids. :P

  • I hate when people compare Danny Carey to God....i mean he's good but he's no Danny Carey

  • GET GONG SLAPPED NIKKA!

  • this is like getting toutched by the holy spirit...at your dick...

  • cocaine

  • savage

  • way more than 10 mistakes. just saying...

  • @matatmat Mistakes? HA!

  • This guy is so crazy to watch live.

  • lol this is an entire measure off

  • Such a relief to hear after listening to morons argue Travis Barker is the best drummer of all time.

  • 0:43 FK YEAH !!!

  • Danny Carey is the best rock drummer out there right now, hands down. I love that he has, and plays, a gong!

  • @SayOw I do agree that Danny is amazing (Trust me, he's like.. pretty much god in my mind) However I feel that the world lost one of the single most talented and best drummers when Jimmy 'The Rev' Sullivan of Avenged died. He honestly could hold his own next to DC. I went to the A7X concert last summer with Mike Portnoy taking Revs place. While I'm sure I'll get castigated for it.... he was not great. I'd give him like.. maybe a 6 of 10.. DC and Rev? Upwards of 9 or more.. but DC is amazing!!

  • @BlindTruths - Castigation is not what you need. You actually should probably stick with a simple therapist to manage your denial and defeatist issues. If one day your treatment proves succesful, then come back and surely let "us who care what you say" know, about your progress. So that we may sleep better.

  • God that kit is beast!!! Fucking solid equipment

  • 9 people are fags

  • Danny: "Hmmm.... What can i do that'll make every other drummer in this world kick their own ass?? Oh i know, i'll keep playing with on hand and i'll grab a mallet from the ground and STRATEGICALLY hit a gong and then go back into playing the song....."

  • holy shit i havent listened to tool in such a long time im gonna redownload all their albums right now OMG

  • @ughh11 You ARE a dick

  • @DitchReality i know right!!!!!!

  • I would love to have him as my instructor!!

  • @Btrickinya aaha dude do u know how hard that would be for him to explain the rythym? lol "dude its easy you just take the fibonacci sequence and apply it to the drums while playing a different rythym with your base pedal and hi hat" aaha

  • @incyourbus1 Yea.. he's amazing. This is a great comment though. I agree. His polys are like.. drool worthy & the stuff he does.. -Shudders- I'm a very lucky woman to have met him last time he was home in Kansas City (he's from there, duh! as am I) I just stood staring at him like little girl with a crush, started giggling like a moron and crying while asking every question I could think of from all the old information I gleaned from my ex who's a drummer. He's SUPER nice and REALLY humble.

  • @BlindTruths haha thats fuckin legit

  • Danny Carey is a fuckin ridiculous beast....a fact I'm sure you all know already but this footage gets me so hype I just had to share XD

  • 7 people are HATERZZ

  • There are way more than 10 differences between what he plays and the original recording.

  • There are way more than 10 differences between what he plays and the original recording.

  • this dude is a monster

  • daaayum good quality

  • faaaaat gong hit 0:45

  • Holy mother of Tool, this is nuts. This is klearlykahmerican on a new username cuz my other one quit working. So I forgot I posted on this video like...months and months ago....but now that I see how many people have actually tried to explain to me what is great about Danny, I have changed my mind. It just simply is a matter of taste. And "impressiveness" is a matter of opinion also. SO it was pointless of me to bash on him. If you want to know who I do like and impresses me, look up Tomas Haake

  • In almost every song Danny Carey brings drumming to a new level.

  • somebody need to create a rap with this..

I can sorta of imagine somebody rapping to this song

  • dude...ur retarded....i found 15 before one minute....

  • He is a weapon of mass percussion.

  • @thrideye387 OH SNAP!

  • him working the gong aswell SEXY :D

  • @klearlykahmerican

    wow,

so you play the drums, thats great!

    so who are you?

    are you in a band?

have you made a name for yourself?

are you one of the most influential and amazing drummers of the last 20 years?

    didn't think so.

its great that you have "you're own" opinion, but don't get shitty when the majority do not agree...........

  • You have to see them live..Danny keeps the craft of brilliant drumming alive

  • epic face 1:39

  • This video in particular may seem like nothing spectacular, but the song lateralus, drumming wise, is unbelievable. If you listen to the bridge, which starts at 4:49 on the studio version, the drums are in 5 and the rest of the music is in 6. Put on a really nice pair of headphones, and listen to that bridge part, ending around 6:20s. The drums are panned and the listening experience is unmatched. This video is the end of the song. Danny Carey has so much more to offer than this video.

  • @klearlykahmerican

Yeah, he's not the most amazing drummer ever, and there are probably other drummers who are faster, more complex, whatever. The reason that everyone likes Danny Carey so much seems to me to be that he's unique. i can't say i've heard another drummer who plays like he does. There are definately drummers who CAN play like he does, but the parts Danny, and Tool as a whole, write tend to be a very unique and different sound.

And besides, there's nothin wrong with his drumming.

  • Thats Bonzos kit in the corner!

  • Danny Carey is able to tell the story using drums,Most times its left up to other instruments in a band,Most drums just play normal 4 beat.He helps the songs by giving it atmosphere.Alot of good drummers over power a song trying to show off their technique.Tool work as a team putting across their story.Thats what I call quality,And I have millions of Danny Carey fans who agree.Millions of fans can't be wrong when they hear something GREAT.

  • gong hit ftw!!!!!

  • Good heavens, are all American's this annoyingly argumentative?

  • @milkminotaur sadly enough, yes.

  • Dude you are a, Well, you asked us to be nice so I will be. That said, If you can tell how easy he performs his songs, due to the fact he under plays his true ability for the purpose of the band and the song themselves. DANEY CAREY IS EPIC end of story.

  • HE HIT THE GONG!

  • @klearlykahmerican, im a drummer as well and i understand your reasoning for thinking the way you do,but actually you are right in wrong in some ways. danny carey is one of my fav drummers, but hes isnt the one i idol, there are many great drummers that have unique and crazy styles like jo jo mayer (look him up). danny carey can be said to have no style but each man plays there music different in his own way even if it may sound the same as others but its even the slightest of difference counts

  • legendary drummer

  • agree

  • man! crazy drum set up haha

  • SOMEONE PLEASE INBOX ME THE NAME OF THIS SONG

  • @ruler127 its in the title of the video

  • @SCman1337 I wrote lateralus and i get another song :/

  • man tool is just a epic band that is all there is to it and seeing them live even shows how really good they are be sides hearing there songs over a cd great band and very good skills epic music they took music to a whole new way but still kept it with all the classic and new age sound tool is just badass

  • anyone else hear crash cymbals in areas that are not played in the video?>

  • nice kit dude ....sweet!

  • Okay, I am not here to trash Danny Carrey, but I am a drummer and have been for half my life, could someone please, without cussing me out, tell me SPECIFICALLY what is impressive, creative, or plain interesting about THIS SPECIFIC drum video?

  • @klearlykahmerican

Most people rate and comment that vid knowing what Carrey is doing in every Tools' song.

Listen to, for example Laterleus (album) and u will know what i mean.

  • @paul12349 dude, im tired of people telling me "you will know what i mean" with tool songs. i always thought true inspiring music meant different things to different people but it seems Tool fans collectively feel the same stuff from their music, which is almost scary.

  • @klearlykahmerican

I always said that I respect Carrey mostly not for his technique or drum kit, or looks (??).

But for his composing skills. That is the best thing about him. Try to compose that difficult drum parts for song that match to its character. In that case for example Dream Theater and Mike Portnoy is.... I wont say anything.

  • @paul12349 why in the world would u bring up mike portnoy and dream theatre? i just don't understand everyone's feud between these two bands who sound absolutely nothing alike. And I guess that is the best part to like about Danny, is how he writes his parts or w/e, because WHAT he is playing isn't that interesting, but if it sounds good with the music, then good job to him. I am just saying I know plenty more drummers who write better stuff, and it happens to be more interesting.

  • @klearlykahmerican

You know what 'for example' means?

Im not going to convince you that Carrey is better. I just dont give a shit, its your opinion.

  • @klearlykahmerican

And that you probably do. But I doubt personally. Have you LISTENED to any tool songs? It's almost hard to find a Tool song without complex polyrhythmic playing or really compound time signatures. He has flawless technique/on the dot playing and he can tear the shit out of his kit when he wants. I would really like to see you invent or play better. just sayin.

  • @klearlykahmerican Please don't take the uneducated ramblings of my fellow compatriots seriously. Whether you like Danny Carey's drumming really just comes down to personal taste. He may not be the most technically proficient drummer in the world, but he has a knack for writing pieces that mesh very well together with the rest of the band. If you would like specific examples of why I believe he is the world's premiere drummer, I would recommended "Ticks & Leeches," "The Grudge," and "Vicarious"

  • @TheGreatSatan72826 love the grudge, the ending is brilliant. even if you dont like tool, any drummer will appreciate that

  • @klearlykahmerican Cary uses very unique time pieces and rhythms in every one of the songs tool does. He turns a what would be a chaotic drum sequence to any other band's rhythm into something that works by working with something that works. The "Lateralus" example was about the Fibonacci Sequence, which is mostly with the lyrics but you could argue it encompasses the whole song (its a math concept look it up if you havent heard of it.), though the whole album is good. Hes a talented drummer.

  • @klearlykahmerican

What drummers do you personally feel are better writers than Danny?

  • @klearlykahmerican Most of his stuff is Texture. This video is just a snippet of his talent, and yes it is a slow song. So if you've noticed, songs with slower tempos and warmer tones make it harder to play extravagantly. Mind you he's trying not to overpower the other instruments, but still he maintains a proper complement to the music. Very few bands can match the darkness that Tool composes. I really don't know of a match to Danny Carey for this type of song/music.

  • @klearlykahmerican and if you have this point of view, why dont you post positive comments on videos of bands you like, instead of trying to upset the fans of this band?

  • @klearlykahmerican

Its not just about danny carey's style it is also about the fact that TOOL are one of the few bands that write their music around Danny's drum riffs which i see as talent but this is only my opinion, form your own this is why we have the fredoom to choose

  • @klearlykahmerican In this video specifically? Think of John Bonham in the song "kashmir".

Very simple beat. Hovever you just get the feeling of power and skill. Danny is a fantastic drummer, his perfect control over time signatures and cross rhythms are un paralleled. This is the easy part of the song, but still if youre a drummer you'll get it. It is very Drummerish. This might not have helped you.

  • His tunning on his drum kit is absolutely perfect, just listen to the toms and his dynamics of the drums, it's really amazing to get a sound like that out of a drum kit. Maybe you can't appreciate his drumming since you don't play drums, I didn't even notice him that much as a drummer and I had been listening to tool for years, then when I started playing I was paying attention to all the drumming in my music and realized how good he is.

  • @kope2kope but i DO play drums. and its funny because i noticed some good parts throughout tool songs, easily, because i listen to drums first in alot of bands. schism, vicarious, parabola all have some cool unique drum parts. i just dont see anything unique in this song. i mean the tones from his set are good, but its frustrating to see all these people freak out over his gong hit! LOL! and then comment on his sixteenth notes runs on the toms! amateur drum song, next please.

  • I don't think they're freaking out about what he's doing, I think they're freaking out about the amazing sounds he produces.

  • @kope2kope amazing sounds? he is using a drumset if you didnt notice. i mean yea, you can tune your drums to fit the song that is needed, or w/e but even if you say that, do you think this guy tunes his drums for every song when they play a live set? impossible! so i dont think people can say he is an amazing drummer because he tuned his drums good. and i dont understand really the difference between what he's doing and the sounds he produces, just admit it, hes not an AMAZING drummer!

  • You're not a musician at all if you can't realize the simple difference between technicality of playing and production of sound. And yes he does tune is drum kit a lot for different songs, you don't even listen to tool so you wouldn't even know. It's pathetic how musically ignorant you are.

  • @klearlykahmerican

AHAHAHA you know nothing of music! just because you don't know doesn't mean that it's not there! Listen to Dimebag Darrell - if you'd have ever seen him live, you'd realise it's so much more technical! there's so much stuff that's there, but subtle - that doesn't make the musician any less amazing.

  • @klearlykahmerican

true is that everyone develope own opinion about tool (psychological) second thing - if u look at drums, bass, guitar and vocal u will see 100% creative people + will to show to people through music some life experience...one more thing that I like about tool is that Maynard sings metaphorically in most songs...that's the music that u can listen all alone or with few friends that is hard to find that develope similar opinion about band "Tool" so u can identified with them...

  • @klearlykahmerican Well for me, its the colage of perfectly timed off beat hits, the dynamic beat control, the intuitive feel for fill ins and cymbal use, perfect technique, and the layout of the kit allowing for resonant echo as well as strength, as well as innovative melding of the melody with the rythm. But that's just me.

  • @klearlykahmerican . The impressive thing about this particular "piece" is the time signatures. They correspond to the whole point of the song, which is based on the Fibonacci sequence. In fact the entire album "lateralus" is based on the idea of the golden ratio.

  • @klearlykahmerican

Clearly, it's the epic gong hit.

I love seeing it and I love doing it.

It might not be the most amazing thing to have ever happened on planet earth, but it makes me feel warm and fuzzy deep down inside.

You do have a gripe. Probably about something you don't understand, which is why you trash this video and the people who admire it. By proxy, you are being disrespectful to the man.

Don't like it? Go else where and get over yourself.

  • @TheOscillator

I saw them play last week at the Big Day Out (music festival in New Zealand) and I almost shat myself with joy when he hit the gong...I knew it was coming and it still gave me the best chicken skin ever...Love how he travels with that big ass thing just to hit it once in one song...all time :D

  • @klearlykahmerican Do you get kicks out of going to every Danny Carey video and talking shit about him, or are you just bored? If its the first fuck off. If its the second go rub your huge mangina.

  • @SCman1337 Couldn't have said it better myself

  • @klearlykahmerican his touch and groove the way he feels time is amazing,...this video is of him playing a very simple part to what he usually plays but its just what ever he plays he does it with pure emotion an you can see the passion going into every note

  • @klearlykahmerican

the reason why this video get such high ratings is this. Tool does to hardly anything sort of clinics interviews or anything like that. so when daney carey finally met with someone and had it professionally filmed (cause that never happened really before) people now had something to watch and see him play. its not so much what he's doing that makes it so awesome cause this is part f the some that is more focused on the words and the little guitar thing at the end.

  • @klearlykahmerican

plus, if you listened to tool then you would understand that the vocals and lyrics are just as important as the drumming or anything else. people love ringo star not because he was on the cover of INSANE DRUMMER magazine. they loved him because of the choice he made as a drummer and as a professional if you judge another drummers qualifications and question there popularity based on how creative or impressive one song ends on one video....thats pretty unfortunate.

  • @klearlykahmerican what is amazing about this video is that its Danny Carey.

  • @klearlykahmerican I specifically like at 38 seconds he prepares to hit the GONG

  • @klearlykahmerican ;;;what is impressive, creative or plain interesting is his ability to write and perform music that matches perfectly the lyrics/vocals and guitar of this band,,,they play in as perfect harmony as you get in any music I have ever heard

  • @klearlykahmerican basicly u didnt see all the crazy stuff he did earlyer in this song , this is just the simple ending , listen to the full song

  • @klearlykahmerican danny carey is famous for what he does, and you aren't. the creativeness is somewhere in there, isn't it?

  • @bterwin9887 .................

  • @klearlykahmerican can you do that just lik him? Creativity is being origional planitive and dynamic, exactley what Carey produces in TOOL one of the best masters of odd time signatures.

  • @klearlykahmerican Nothing! :-) I'm with ya on this one brother!!!!

  • @klearlykahmerican

No, your request is far too dull for a reasoned critique.

    Next!?

  • @klearlykahmerican

Carey's popularity among drummers and non-drummers alike stems from the diversity of his sound and dynamics, his technical ability, frequent use of odd time signatures, polyrhythms and polymeters. He can make any drum part his own, because he doesn't do whats expected.

  • @klearlykahmerican one, his instensty he plays wth.

  • @klearlykahmerican Hey man TOOL is whatever you want them to be. A lot of TOOL fans say a song is about this or that, because Maynard sings a certain line. Later in life MJK has gone on to say he has "only sold half the farm." He gives an idea and he wants you to expand on this, in your own thoughts. Danny has an exceptionally great drumming background through his jazz drumming in college to even watching his dad's masonic practices and translating them to his drums. also watch the gong part.

  • @klearlykahmerican this is danny playing a song by tool. when playing a song like this he isnt trying to impress you with his playing, he is playing what is appropriate for the song. there is nothing on youtube of danny carey's solo stuff but take my word for it it is far more impressive than this. this is just a badass song

  • @YogiDMT agreed.

LOOK AT THE GUNS ON THIS GUY!!! :D

He is by far my favorite artist. I love watching this guy live. I have seen him solo live and he is like Vishnu in a blur of beats. And agreed, wish there was a video that does him justice.

  • @YogiDMT Really... if you guys do not think this is fucking amazing... then you need to get yourself checked cause this is flawless. He does have some amazing drum solos posted up but this is basically a drum solo through out a whole song. He is like that in all of their songs. Look up Ticks and Leeches on here. You will shit..

  • @DrDonkeySlayer your so right... this is precision right here. people dont understand that drum solos dont showcase true percussion skill like this does.

  • @klearlykahmerican the impressive thing about this solo that it is unique, it has no 4/4 beats in it. that why its impressive and you need to be very experienced in drumming to be like him

  • @klearlykahmerican i think its cuz u never really see any tool member and the fact that danny made this is awsome, i myself is a drummer and its pretty cool he did

  • Comment removed

  • @klearlykahmerican I'm pretty sure people fail to mention poly rhythm and the ability to do what every predecessor has done plus some. That includes creativity, syncopation, and just an amazing set of people around him. Why haven't i heard of you could become your main mantra. think about that question and I'm sure you can find answers how to better yourself and possibly your career.

  • @klearlykahmerican Although this segment of the song isn't that impressive, the bridge prior to the solo & tribal tom beat is quite impressive. His profound use of odd time signatures in the music, use of hemiolas, very weird phrasing of his parts, (playing through measures). TOOL as a whole never ceases to amaze me, it's as if they rehearse with calculators & say "alright if danny's in 7/8, justin is in 3/4 and alex is in 11/16 we'll all meet up at 1 on the.. 36th measure." True musical Genius

  • @klearlykahmerican

    this is not his best

  • @klearlykahmerican

I have a really hard time believing you've been a drummer with even an iota of talent and not know what's impressive with Danny Carey's drumming, but I'll bite.

In Lateralus, it's more or less the mathematical composition of the drums laid against the rest of the instruments. The timing for Danny at one point is 5/8 when the rest of the band is playing in 6/8. It takes him six measures to catch up for 5 measures of the band. Put together, it's incredible.

  • @klearlykahmerican The video is about the fact he has a shiny drum kit, its made of symbols!

  • @klearlykahmerican sorry if there arent enough chops for you in this video...Why does is need to be impressive? The drums part fits the song and thats what counts

  • @klearlykahmerican Sure. About this video...nothing in particular....it's pretty vanilla. The fevor pitch I guess is more about the music in general. I think Tool is the best four piece rock band ever to assemble. The current line-up makes my ears cum. The way they work together to produce music fits perfect. As more fans dig into the meanings of songs and the bands beliefs a pattern emerges. People notice it's not all about just the singer but (IMO) the three best musicians in rock music

  • @klearlykahmerican this video is amazing because danny carey places each of his notes in the most creative and musically cohesive way, instead of just playing a basic beat that everyone has heard before

  • @klearlykahmerican composition, fluiding, the phrasing of his parts, the sounds of his drums, take your pick. when you hear him drumming, you can tell it's him for several different reasons. and they're all good reasons.

  • @klearlykahmerican For this video, nothing much except for the fact that the beat sounds amazing. In other songs like Ticks and Leeches, The Grudge or Aenema, you see how amazing and complex his playing style really is. And in songs like Part of Me, Crawl Away or Hooker with a Penis, you just get some good ol head bangin', thrash, heavy sounding music that is a great contrast to what you could find in some of his more mellow songs.

  • @klearlykahmerican

hey, i can answer you about what is impressive, creative and interesting! In this song danny is always changing ryhtm, that's complecated!!! he's playing with the "fabionacci suite", that means that his rythm change like 9/8 , 8/8 and 7/8. and also this is a hard stuff of polyrythm. i'm sorry for my worst english, but i hope my answer could help you!

  • @klearlykahmerican you gotta admit he aint bad, this although is not his most impressive song....

  • @klearlykahmerican exactly

  • @klearlykahmerican

maybe listen to the grudge or rosetta stoned. look up some of his own stuff.

all i can say is he is the only drummer ive ever heard where you know its him. he truly is unique.

  • @klearlykahmerican why don't you chk out live videos of tool for songs such as aenima, ticks &leeches, the grudge....

  • @klearlykahmerican why don't you chk out live videos of tool for songs such as aenima, ticks &leeches, the grudge....besides this is the least entertaining part of the song(drumming-wise) for carey's standards

  • @klearlykahmerican Why don't you just go see tool live then come back on here and say he isnt THAT impressive

  • @klearlykahmerican alot of fans appreciate his unique style and rhythms

  • @klearlykahmerican interesting question.. to me the attraction and appeal of all 'Carey' is the solidity and validity of unifying the rhythmic/percussive elements along to the melodic chord progressions. Adding not just an impressive drum performance (Neil Peart) but, a musically intelligible counter-part to the song. And he does it with out a F*n glitch.
