The band really must suck if they need to use that many different tunings. I know bands who can use only maybe 1 or 2 different tunings, and they're good to go...
@themodernguitarist very interesting. I've read all sorts of stuff about Angus' rig and never heard any mention of any rack stuff, let alone Mesa. Not doubting you, just taken aback somewhat.
This is actually pretty simple. Not sure why everyone thinks it's not. Wireless system, power conditioner, effects, marshall preamp and power amp, diezel vh4, switching unit, cabs, guitars, and backups for everything. Don't think I'm missing anything. His live tone is awesome btw. Not a huge fan of his tone on the CDs but live is great.
@adriandeftones Different Tunings actually really are inspiring and you can come up with some very new interesting stuff, that has nothing to do with "lack of style and technique", go ask Mark Tremonti ;)
it always amazes me why guitarists think they need 10,000$ dollars worth of shit to get a decent tone...there just products themselves of the industry. By the time that guitar signal comes out of the speakers its destroyed. 25 guitars for some simple ass music. give me a fucking break.
i lmao'd he goes "yeah I like to keep it simple" then it shows a rack with like 20 units hooked up. You want "simple" talk to Angus. SG-->JCM800, and that's fucking it.
I swear, I was getting ready to post the same thing you just wrote! So I will give it a Thumbs Up instead. Simple huh? I nearly spit my coffee up when the camera panned in on his cabinet after he said that. I just watched the review of Guitar World on his PRS Barritone, and ended up here. Great post.
I don't listen to Staind but this was a nice thorough look at a modern hard rock guitarists' barrage of equipment. I'm interested in his guitar for playing metal in Drop A. I currently play an Ibanez Japanese 7 string in drop A and love it, though.
@Death66reaper6 Well, their shit is mostly G# and G, also the old songs. He plays lots of old songs with this silverburst PRS as seen in some live videos...
Still, I play G# using 60 and you're right, 75 is just freakin' thick
@evilperson86u I didn't know he ever played ESP but I know he had played and was endorsed by Ibanez for a long time-he even had a signature baritone. And I think that was right before he was endorsed with PRS but I could be wrong. His Ibanez was the MMM1 guitar.
I travel with one guitar. Fender Stratocaster. I've only broken a string once in my entire career and I had a new one on before the end of the song. Even if I could I wouldn't lug that much crap around.
Its simple cause he tells people what he want's and how he wants it to work and they do it for him....This rig is not simple at all...His Gear page in guitar world was so crammed it was ridiculous.
At 3:42 you can see that theres 2 unreleased songs in the "F#,C#,G#..." tuning called "SNARE" and "FAILURE".. mystery? I tried to find them but there is nothing! :O
If you got some information about these then reply to this comment! Thanks!
Mike has no idea what PRS is sending him... He's got a fuckin' 513 for christ sake. Most players would kill someone for a 513. He doesn't even seem excited about his gear. He'll have one hell of a guitar collection once it's all said and done, but he probably doesn't even care about that.
he kept saying simple. simple to me is guitar stomp boxes head and cab. i like his stuff though. i'm jealous. 21 different tunings? im sure if he took the time he can play all of theirs songs with one tuning. probably will be tough though.
His Ibanez Signatures are way more better, better sustain with his crazy Baritone tunings...Hope he goes back to Ibanez... And John Petrucci to Re-issue the JPM's I would kill to see those again in production
@moontanboy your ignorance need not continue. maybe they use alot of different tunings because aaron has a diverse voice and because quite frankly everything doesnt always sound better in standard and drop d. anyway check out the video of mike shredding and the dime all star show from 09
@moontanboy dude barton51's right when i right stuff i mess around with different tunings all the time, when you find something that sounds amazing it just is and think about it if u need to get from the 7th fret to the 15th fret wouldnt it be easier to tune it differently and only have to go to maybe the 10th fret
@wehurtthosewelove what about harmonics and tone????? it maybe the same notes on different frets (with alternate tunings) but the dynamics of those notes are much cooler if you have to work for it using a standard tuning.
Unless your a slide guitar player there is no excuse for such showing off and more importantly no need... learn the maths to unlock the fretboard and the rest is easy.
You would think he could cut down by using a morpheus drop tune pedal (and/or capo) and just tuning one string down for drop tunings. he could do the whole damn set with 2 baritones 2 standard lengths and two acoustics.
Simple system? yep, especially if you were to compare it against The Edges bus sized rig or even David Gilmours setup. But 21 different tuning??? WTF??? His tech must realy have to be on his game backstage. But all in all I like the Mushoks guitar sound. Been a fan for a long time.

i love you mike noone goes all out at a show like you but you guys have gone soft am sorry. it all sounds the same now i dont why you need some many tuning.
