it's funny how people debate over which modern tank is the best while they haven't even faced each other on the battlefield and more than half the specs are classified and none of them don't know how tank warfare works

modern tanks are advanced yes, but an insurgent armed with an RPG can still knock one out.

@JimbobHarrigan1984 No insurgents can no longer knock out Western tanks with RPG, such as the M1 Abrams and Challenger II and Leopard 2A6 or 2A7 that use Chobram armour that deflects the heat of RPG's and also shatters armour piercing rounds upon impact. So your wrong, even the Russians use Kontact 5 armour protection, not as good as Chobram but efficient.

no it depends how many rockets you have and besides insurgents can just stack 3-4 at mines to achieve a mobility kill because the tank treads are the easiest part to destroy

I think the Abrams & Challenger are the best tanks, Abrams winning by numbers.The Leapord 2 would be next as I just don't think the fire control system is as good as the Canadian FCS installed in the Abrams & Challenger. I would put the Mercuva next over the Leclerc as the Leclerc just doesn't have the armor.The T-90 is next, crew comfort is just not there & I have talked to enough tankers to know that comfort transforms into skill. 3 instead of 4 men just don't work when stress & fatigue set in

@Justmyside I don't know, to me if you can get 3 men instead of 4 thanks to a good automatic loader, then so be it, I think this argument is just an old and tired cliche tbh, as for the merkava, from what I heard it's the best out there as far as crew comfort goes, I'd say Leopard could be at the top, but these things are hard to rate.. no doubt the abrams is good but I think Leopard and Leclerc are slightly better, but like you I can only speculate when it comes to FCS systems.

its seems to me the simulator must hawe a beter graphics engine like the vbs or vbs 2 or arma 1 and 2 egine or even a more advansed like crysis 2 or something like that to get used the visuals to combat trough a scope

@hibweak Good point. There is an excellent tank simulation called Steel Beasts Pro PE available to the public. The same company sells Steal Beasts Professional intented for military application. To date the US Army still uses its crappy AFIST/MCOFT/ACOFT or whatever. There all junk with lousy graphics. The SB Professional retails to the military at about $16000.00 a copy, compare that to the millions they spend on the sim crap.

israeli merkava was a big mistake, they only built it because they needed a jewish tank, they could have bought the m1s from america and saved so much money and effort, not to mention that tanks are largely irrelevant in todays israeli wars

Well russian tanks are overrated. Most lacks computer systems except t-90, but t-90 is something not comparable to leopard 2 (I think it is in same class as m1

Not entirely true. Tanks are fast becoming obsolete. You can't use tanks under enemy skies because of their susceptibility to hostile fighters and bombers. And under friendly skies there is not much of a use for tanks. Lighter vehicles will become more commonplace in the future.

Durring the world wars, it was the Germans who had the upper hand in Tank Tech, Rocket and Bomb Tech to. It was only a matter of over whelming numbers of troops against Hitler and his armies that let us win the war, nothing to do with Tanks etc.

@robotracking , I have to say that the russian T34 was a revolution, with sloped armour and a big gun. Even the tiger was a prey for that one. They also came in massive numbers that is true. but it was easy to maintain, and easy to ride. Above all not high tech but durable.

I think leopard 2 A 6 is better than the abrams. Better engine, various other things too. The main gun in abrams is german anyway. :D

I don't see where the main guns design is from makes a difference? If Leopard 2 used an American designed gun would it be any less effective of a tank?

the 2A6 does use the L55 gun whilst the Abrams uses the L44 gun.

I love the Abrams, but they put too much engine in it. Wastes fuel and if you run full power it will throw it's tracks apart. Still the M1A1 is probably the best tank ever built if you can afford it. Fire control system and armor are excellent. 120mm will kill any armor vehicle out there and we can "shoot on the run" quite accurately at great ranges. Being "second best" in armor warfare is NOT cool! :(

Its not about the technology, but how well the crews perform in combat. If you put a well trained veteran crew in an old but workable vehicle, they could win if they could work as efficiently as thier vehicle can allow. Thats why the work space of the crew should be the center of the design like the Israeli Merkava, the most survivable crew friendly tank, next is the German Leopard 2 then the US M1A2 and the British Challenger 2 are the best tanks currently in service in the world

its not about the technology now? put the best tank crew inside a Sherman, and go up against a new crew inside an Abrams, and see who wins.

Yeah well, Offcourse the Sherman is very old and has a smaller gun, while the Abrams Has new features that the Sherman doesnt have. But when it comes down to it, A veteran Sherman crew can outperform an abrams espescially if the arbrams crew just left Basic Armor. Its all about Efficency and although the New crew are quite efficient, the Sherman crew are so experienced that they can do what they do, in half the time that new crrew can do thiers.

The Iraqis Experience was w/ older weapon systems while the US Knows how to train thier troops effectively enough to simulate real combat, But if their adversary were newer Designs, w/ More experienced Crews then there would be no differentiable handicaps

Well the technolongy is helping the humans to do their jobs better then normal so the tank design is centering the crew in the middle of it. And it is also about the technology as you said the crew only can work as good as the vehicle can allow.

Actually that T-tank has a shell in the open the whole time. That means that if you get hit hard that shell makes sure you die from it. Also, that fourth man can do other stuff like maintainence work, hes not just a loader, thats just what he does when you are in battle. Also, its harder to break a man loader than that stupid, slow auto load that the T-crews hated with a passion.

to 81broncoman:I saw some leopard cutoff and there ware stored shells next to driver, that kills you too when you are hit,there are pictures of abrams that turret is blown up in the air so it is not just T-tanks that explode when hit. as much I know auto loader can load faster that is allowed for gun to shoot, and it works.
