hey Stephstance, great posting here, i am a musician who's been liucky enough to get work this year to support my family, the future looks ok, but i am songwriting also, and you are right, the best way to do it now is grass roots, selling your stuff anywhere, by yourself, signing a record deal or something like that means as an artist, you've sold your rights, thanks, rock on girl!!!
What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
IMO The problem is this "control/conformity" paradigm" that exist has no mercy and no room for "spiritual" evolution! Displaying your energy and your emotion will generate many things from many people but....rest assured it will not move the corporate state though it exist as a composite of individuals. Compound all of this with polarity issues and it is a whopper of frustration. I would like to think we stewards of art not owners but deserve acknowledgement for our energy & effort. Peace
First of all you lost me at "spirits or souls", not to mention these evil middle men you are talking about front tremendous amounts of money on these artists in the hope of seeing a return. It's a business pure and simple. Believe it or not so is the internet. We live in a capitalist society, get used to it.
Sort of reminds you of Hollywood in the early days where the studios basically 'owned' the stars. Well said Steph - unfortunately it's almost always been like that. Not only do the corporations own the patents - they can sue the engineers you exampled, if they take their 'intellectual material' - which the engineer created - somewhere else.
im actually signed to a record deal right now and i can honestly say i am a slave and i am in legal battles right now tryna get out of my contract, cause i feel like i been used the wrong way. i can honestly say fuck the music industry right now and fuck all the politics that come with it. thank you for making this video steph.
Great vlog Steph. Well done. Not being a musician, I was unaware of the little the musician ended up with. While I have respect for business savvy, I have so much more respect for creativity and do feel it should be rewarded. Yeah, heard the rain gutter story. Good golly, what asinine thinking! Wow, you have me thinking in an interesting direction - always a good thing!
The major music industry is scrambling to hold onto the old ways right now. Mtv stopped playing music a long time ago and it's not because people didn't want to hear/see it. It's because Mtv didn't want to pay the royalties. Now we have yt & the web and music is more popular than ever. The future of the music biz is with truly independent musicians, who produce, promote and license their music. :)
The first step to becoming free from the middlemen is to get rid of all the lawyers. Those assholes write the laws and make the rules that allow the middlemen to claim ownership. Sheryl Crow has a farm about 80 miles south of Nashville and she is kind of a bitch!
There isnt a whole lot to the story, I live in Nashville and I encountered her at my workplace. She was cold and more than a little snotty to myself and others that evening. Everyone was being exceedingly nice to her but she seemed to be above us all. Ive met a few "stars" in my line of work, she had the worst attitude of them all.
Right on Steph!!! Excellent job of shining your light on this scary issue!!! It goes far beyond music - to personal autonomy and ownership!!!
Our family started opening our eyes to the dangers of corporate control around 2000 when we heard 1st learned about the Schmeiser vs Monsanto case here in Canada.
The 2004? Canadian documentary "The Corporation" scared the sh*t out of us. It can be viewed here on YouTube on the 'machbar' channel in its entirety.
Your music is just an ext of who you are I believe. Look up cathy morris, she is a local brazian jazz musician. fantastic music, lives downtown here, and sometimes performs in coffee shops and stuff.
UMG is also the "Most Viewed" YouTube user with over 3.4 billion views. The videos uploaded by universalmusicgroup are now only viewable in the United States.
In May 2007, UMG was accused of abusing DMCA in order to squelch criticism, by forcing YouTube to remove a Michelle Malkin video critical of singer Akon. [2] [3] Eventually, UMG backed off its claims after being challenged by the Electronic Frontier Foundation. [4] [5] Recently, UMG has been accused of abusing its power by removing numerous non-profit tribute videos and instrumental covers created by users who use or play songs of bands signed to UMG's labels.
UMG owns the largest music publishing business in the world, Universal Music Publishing Group, following the acquisition of BMG Music Publishing in May 2007.
Vivendi's headquarters are in Paris, France. In the United States, UMG is located in Santa Monica, California, and New York City, along with Universal Music Group Nashville; in the UK the group has a number of offices in London and Romford.
**** Universal Music Group (UMG) is the largest business group and family of record labels in the recording industry. With a 25.5% market share, it is one of the Big Four record labels. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Vivendi; Universal Studios, the movie studio, was sold in part to NBC, which itself is part of GE.
i think in the future sometime things will have to alter regarding ownership and usage. it is another case of technology running ahead of current laws. i hope it starts to change soon. now i realise if i buy a CD i can't use that in any of my home movies etc. in that case why did i buy it, why did i have to pay for it at all if it isn't mine to use after purchase however i want. i seem to be leasing it somehow instead.
I wish there was a way that we could have a system where if you had proof you were contributing to society somehow like volunteering time, sharing your talent, etc. you could get paid through a system like welfare so you could live doing that instead of having to work a shitty job to pay bills and then do what you love in the little free time that is left over.
Also I feel vulnerable about my art too.I draw and paint. I think it's BS when ppl can't use music in the background or in a slideshow.
You're right, you're exactly right, and there's something horribly wrong with the whole thing. What's sent me tripping was seeing people take information and art produced generations or even centuries ago and slapping copyrights on that, claiming "intellectual property" rights. All they did was happen to find it, or buy it somehow. People are intelligent, but distracted by the tube. It's sad. 5/5 and faved. Erica :)
MFGB!! ha! The "business" of things is a mystery to me! I wish I knew how they chose the future "stars"! I know many talented people I would send them!! :-) Lots of subjects to comment to in this vid, Steph! I won't have enough characters! :-) xoxoxoxo
