Great video. i grew up in ny in the 90s. this guys show was always the shit. I remember leaving a show of his at Tramps without my shirt or a shoe. I didn't care. It is maybe sad that people don't rock this way anymore, but i am not going to be an old man and weep for the youth. We had our fun. This is evidence.
You're absolutely correct. Royal Trux wasn't a JS band. Guess I was pulling my trigger a little prematurely. ladies and gentlemen..introducing the late brian jones! Ever seen these guys live? Used to catch them at The Casbah in San Diego. Ever see Steel Pole Bathtub?
@Apopoc I must be because I don't know what the fuck you are talking about. Perhaps you don't either... No no no. I'm kidding. I'm referring to the reaction they received from the French people in attendance. Jackie Chan's got more soul than anyone else who was in that room.
My comments aren't really meant to be taken seriously. Peace.
@theoriginaljeffro from your remark i take it you have never actually been at a rock gig in France ..have you? I have toured in about 25 different countries with a punk/garage rock band and France is one of the the best places to play this kind of stuff. The French LOVE Rock and Roll!!! i think you are assuming something about the French while you are actually thinking of a middle aged audience in a daytime chat-show.. you think JSBE could pull a stunt like this on Oprah? think not.. ;-)
ah well.. maybe i am wrong about his age .. i just thought this performance seems some what forced.. no big deal.. what ever he likes.. i just prefer a bit more "wittyness" that's all.. enjoy!
That's hardly losing control in the common sense sense of the word. Sometimes performers just get "in the moment." He's playing a character and this is what the character is like, sometimes.
oh man.. i have seen this band live and enjoyed it a lot.. but i think this performance is just annoying.. it reminds me of artists that once had a great moment of relevance a period filed with rage and vibrant energy.. now they past 40 and see themselves playing a promo slot on a french daytime chatshow and suddenly realise that he's playing the corporate game in order to pay for his mortgage etc.. suddenly the angry teenager in him wakes up and he starts disrupting and disrespecting his host
@casparwijn - not sure how this performance was disrespecting the host, they were just being JSBX and doing their own thing as usual. Besides, this was in 1998 so hardly past 40.
True. It is down to opinion. It's a new world. It keeps a-changing. Imagine what your grandparents thought when they went from Big Band music to Little Richard! By the way, my sons would agree with all you've written. Then again, they think Henrdix is lame! I enjoyed the discourse. You are bright and reasonable.
@fmalitz Thanks, I enjoyed it too. Hendrix lame? In 200 years he will still sound like he came from outer space, pure genius. I love blues and have great respect for true bluesmen so if I'm ever in Chicago I hope I'll catch one of your shows. Take care.
Thank you. I will investigate. Maybe I'll learn something. I based everything I felt and said from this terrible performance. Perhaps I'm wrong about their others but this one certainly pushes the envelope in a negative direction. I do have a question: How can one employ feeling and humor when one lacks the fundamentals of communication? Can an ape actually paint with expression?
@fmalitz That is a matter of opinion, Frank, to me this is a great raw performance, seems you forgot the word "explosion" in their name here;) Maybe you prefer a more polished or cultivated appearance but there's also The Who, Iggy Pop & the Stooges, old Stones.. To me JSBX are mainly a rock & roll band, who cares about the title. Nights in White Satin by The Moody Blues isn't blues either.
Phibess, a very classy, measured response. The fact is that music IS about playing the correct notes or it would not be music. The obvious question is who determines what's correct so you make a valid point. We all started out in the garage but didn't go public screamimng "The Blues are Number One" with no clue as to what the blues represent or their actual structure. He chose the name "Blues Explosion", not me!
@fmalitz Music is about playing the right notes but there's also feeling, energy, humor, mannerism..."the Blues is # 1" is one of his signature screams, Blues as name of their band.. Hysterical hollers, affectations.. are nothing new, think James Brown, Little Richard, Elvis, Cpt Beefheart.. JSBX worked with RL Burnside, Rufus Thomas so I guess they know well what blues is, why not look up those videos, Frank, also Devil Got My Woman? I'd learn a little about a band before giving statements.
As a working blues player in Chicago, I am not offended by anyone's music but I am certainly annoyed at this crap. 1) There's no blues here at all. 2) His singing and playing is the equivalent of a teen-age garage band. He's nothing more than a poseur. If he has any legit performance, someone tell me where to look and I'll retract my statement.
@fmalitz 1. In this very video he says "I DO NOT PLAY NO BLUES" several times. No JSBX is not orthodox blues, their music is a blend of noise, garage, blues rock, soul, punk, rockabilly.. What's wrong with a garage band? 2. Legit performance? Are you kidding, JSBX is one of the best life acts you'll ever find. Watch 2 Kindsa Love live on Recovery & if you're still not getting it then I'm sorry. Music isn't just about playing correct notes. if you want more bluesy stuff watch Devil Got My Woman.
AWESOME JAM, Great performance. Would love to be there live after I've had a few beers so the intonation would not offend my ear!! This guy is legendary NYC underground ROCK AND ROLL !!

Spencer is obviously influenced by the stage performance of Lux Interior of The Cramps(correct me if I'm wrong).Only that he's trying too damn hard.I don't know. The whole thing looks more like a "show"...like something is missing from up there.. maybe the real rock n roll spirit.
@amnaki overthinking it a bit? You like the cramps better, fine. But disavowing Jon spencer of rock'n'roll spirit, shame on you ;). But influence by the cramps could explain the theme of the album 'plastic fang'.
What a performance! This kicks more ass than a donkey in a phone booth! All the JSBE albums will be re-issued in expanded editions starting this year, and I hope they will add some live tracks. Albumwhise the Blues Explosion masterpiece is "Orange", a fantastic mess of plues, phunk and rawk n roll.
This is fucking awesome. They were such a great live band. It was never fully realized in the studio but that's alright. My best club experience was them in Tampa. Man they were fucked up backstage. Judah got some high gear action from my friend. There's a new band from New York called The Ghost Tongue that has this kind of power. Check them out live or on myspace. They have one video up here called "Quieter than the Crowd." Great song.
This is actually one of the only live performances on youtube that I just play on the background while I'm on my computer doing other stuff. The sound quality is great and the music is stunning, what a great live band.

This version of "High Gear" is great. After hearing this the original version just does not stack up. Great live performance.
