@7Wolffang He's someone who was raised in the Wammy house, but never saw L. So he set up a "game" for L, by trying to kill people in a pattern, and see if L realizes who the killer is. @7Wolffang Beyond Birthday is behind the LABB murder cases L refers to briefly. BB was one of the first children at Wammy's House, and was (I suppose) a relatively normal kid. One day, though, he snapped, made himself look like L, and decided he wanted to surpass L by becoming the greatest criminal of all time.

If you check out the Death Note wiki (you can google it) and look up Beyond Birthday, it'll give you all the information you need, even though wikipedia isn't very reliable.

He's the world's greatest murderer (opposed to L who is the world's greatest detective) he grew up at Wmmy's House (L's old or[hanage) they raised him to be L's successor but he couldn't handle the pressure. He started killing people. Eventually' L got him arrestsed. L then took over his alias' Rue Ryuzaki. (or Ryuuzaki). Read Death Note: Another Case, it's really good! Hope I helped ^_^
