At the risk of being a name dropper, I roomed next to Mark Bavaro during his senior year at Notre Dame. He was, and continues to be, one of the finest gentleman athletes I have ever known or heard of. Gentle, godly, and true of character. It was an honor to have known him in any capacity.
Mark Bavaro was such an icon of the 80s as a tight end. The name Bavaro made you think of getting a football or a jersey for Christmas. Or you'd say "Bavaro" after you made a touchdown in street ball.
I grew up a Raiders fan, and wasn't really into Mark Bavaro, but I became a major fan when he caught that pass by Phil Sims and carried the entire 49ers secondary down the field in that 1986 playoff game. It was sweet. They stuck it to the Niners (and their fly-by-night asshole fans) and I loved it.

I didn't think it was possible to get Mark to say more than 3 consecutive words, lol.
