The Holy Roman Empire was not a highly centralized state like most countries today. Instead, it was divided into dozens—eventually hundreds—of individual entities governed by kings, dukes, counts, bishops, abbots or other rulers, collectively known as princes. There were also some areas ruled directly by the Emperor. At no time could the Emperor simply issue decrees and govern autonomously over the Empire. His power was severely restricted by the various local leaders.
From the High Middle Ages onwards, the Holy Roman Empire was marked by an uneasy coexistence of the princes of the local territories who were struggling to take power away from it. To a greater extent than in other medieval kingdoms such as France and England, the Emperors were unable to gain much control over the lands that they formally owned.
Instead, to secure their own position from the threat of being deposed, Emperors were forced to grant more and more autonomy to local rulers, both nobles and bishops. This process began in the 11th century with the Investiture Controversy and was more or less concluded with the 1648 Peace of Westphalia. Several Emperors attempted to reverse this steady dissemination of their authority, but were thwarted both by the papacy and by the princes of the Empire.
@13elsyd13 No. The Kaiser tried to build an empire which was named roman. But they werent romans. They just wanted to copy them. It was a great empire but not roman. The real shadow of the old Roman Empire was The Byzantine Empire. Search it a bit. Dont let the name lie to you,.
@0dimitris9 yea once i tried to campaign the byzantine empire i knew that i was wrong. that comment was when i first played the medieval 2 and knew nothing about roman history thats why i thought they were the shadow of the roman empire. and i think the name kaiser was derived from the name "caesar", cognomen of Julius Caesar the dictator, which in rome it means that he entitles himself as a imperial character or leader.
@exo099 The Frankish King Charlemagne who conquered the Areas now called Italy, France, and Germany. He was crowned the Holy Roman Emperor by the pope. He died his lands were split between his sons. The title of King of France became one son's birthright. The other was given the title of his father, The Holy Roman emperor and his lands (Germany) the Holy Roman Empire.
I think you mean the Hapsburg kings of Spain, when the Hapsburg branch ruled Austria, which ruled the Holy Roman Empire. The emperors were not Spanish.
@WoWhelperful The Holy Roman Empire was an "Empire", not a kingship. The Emperors were not always German or born within the Empire. Many of the Emperors were elected though Royal councils and such. If for say, Portugual wanted one of their royal family members emperor of the holy roman empire they would contact the empire's council and if the council like the royal, they would elect him emperor. Hope I helped! :D
@Wikingersohn93@MrVanDaak In English, the word empire is connected with monarchy. An empire needs a king or something equal. But in German, the word "Reich" doesn't need an emperor. A "Reich" can also be a democracy.
I'm not very shure about that. Of course if you think of other countries with the word "Reich" in it like Frankreich (France) or something. They of course don't have a monarchy today, but still the word "Frankreich" is older then it's democracy. For Germany the interesting thing is, that it was never called a Reich when it didn't have an emperor. (apart from 1933-1945 for propaganda issues) So why call it a Reich today?
@Wikingersohn93 Look for the word "German Reich" in the English Wikipedia. There's a description.
From 1918 to 1933, there was no emperor in Germany, but it was called Deutsches Reich! It was a democracy. The Reichspräsident was very powerful, but not an emperor.
@Wikingersohn93 ??? That's ABSOLUTELY false, the official name was still "Deutsches Reich". "Weimar Republic" is only a nickname because the constitutional convention took place in Weimar.
i wouldn't mind playing with the HRE more often, since it was the empire my country was a part of, but i just can't stand how they all sound so angry, always shouting 'JA MEIN KAISER' i'm telling you these game-editors have obviously never been to germany, people there don't all sound like angry short people with bad moustaches :p

@TheVasilcin yes, i mean, the nazi-germay is an example just like the ones you mention, but, what i'm against is that all the people always go back to the same old story and think that the only ones who committed crimes were the germans (they think germans and nazis are the same). @RomanLegioXx ah that's a common misconception, they were actually german, not roman it was a credit to the catholic church not to the roman empire that was before them
@twankism Oh yes it was a credit to the Roman Empire. The German kings regarded themselves in a tradition of a never-ending Roman Empire brought to them by Charlemagne. It was believed that the end of the days would come if the Roman Empire ever ceased to exist.

@BERNTRR I remember there was a similar problem in vanilla M2TW, if you write your Cd key's zeros as o's, then you might not be able to play online, try re-installing the game.
@HULLOHULLO15 its brilliant! theres a quick battle mode with an advisor I'm on right now to get you used to moving units around etc and it saves your battles so you can replay them move the camera at different angles.
See what youve done right and wrong etc.
I love it for the close up battles where people are hacking away or youre chasing a fleeing enemy.
Cavalry charges are cool too.
You can replay it as often as you like and move the camera anywhere each time different.
Many say that the Romans lasted 500 years only. O_O well, it didn't ! it was the Empire ! Everyone forgets about the Republic, there was a Republic ! Empire = 44bc to 472 Ad. 472 = Beginning of the Middle Ages after fall of the Western Empire. Republic = 509 Bc to 44bc. So basically its 1000 years.
@XDlosDominicans Many people also forget the Romans had a monachary before the Republic (753BC-509BC) and the fact that the Roman Empire SURVIVED in the East until 1453 AD, just under 1000 years after the Western Roman Empire had fallen, as the Byzantium Empire, so overall Rome lasted from 753Bc-1453AD (2206 years!)
@Woffled well, i think i was talking about the Western Empire O_O but yeah. after i posted my comment i made a research and there was the Monarchy. so after i was like * F@CK!!!*
why is Germany called the Holy Roman Empire? Germany was the ENEMIES of Rome, and Byzantine is the only one with direct descendants/ancestors to Rome...
@WolfytheWolf5667 Because at this time, Germany did not exist as a nation. It was a collection of states and a kingdom, all united into a single entity called the Holy Roman Empire, which was originally established by Charlemagne. It was lead by an emperor, who were originally crowned by the Pope, but that later changed. It lasted until Napoleon invaded it back in the early 19th century.
@BasileusNil maybe not as a nation (whatever that means in medieval times) but it sure was a kingdom. The German kings styled themselves as Roman emperors. I personally don't like how the HRE is portrayed in M2TW since it denies the fact that there indeed was a German self consciousness and the "Roman Empire" was sort of a honorary title.
That point is actually highlighted in the game's description of the Holy Roman Empire, which points out that at the game start the Kaiser is not only a German rather than a Roman, but is also at odds with the Pope (something about changing the rules so the Empire doesn't control the Vatican).
My favorite faction. Can be hard at first if you anger the pope or France as well as Poland early on. If you can avoid those three problems and take out denmark early on you have a good shoot at dominating Europe.
@TheSirDestroyer Personally I think the Dismounted and mounted Imperial knights are much better. Gothic knights lack the stats that the cavalry of say...France. But I agree with you. They're very much underpowered.
The Holy Roman Empire was a major power during the High middle ages. But it lost its solidarity after lots of struggles with the pope. After the 30 years war there was no central power in the empire anymore.
This faction is simply a war machine o.O All sorts of fancy cavalry and heavy infantry, just isn't fair to the other factions playing the campaign with HRE:D
u need either to destroy the faction u want(conquer it all,i prefer leaving the job to other factions then when it remains only like 1 or 2 regions go out of campaign and u'll find ur factions playable)also u can just hack the file,u'll find vids just search for it,and its just too easy
yes think about it Italians and Spaniards are both latin their launges are similar they both live on penusilas and they been toghter long before Italy knew Germany existed the spaniards(My ancestors) gave the Romans(Ancestors from my mom's side) the famous short sword the gladius hispanienses witch means spanish gladius
@danuisortiz Hey, sry but I'm from Eastern Germany (Mecklenburg) and my impression is that there are far more left-winged people compared to right-winged ones. At least it's the impression you get when you're wandering through a town and see how many youths are dressed and see the graffities on the walls. Hardly seen any nazis...
True, of course, not all east germans. Its just that sadly, most neo-nazi german groups had leaders or are based in the east. Those silly kids. The west has their own fair share to ....
@lewisgunner1 You're a narrow minded idiot. Seem like a kid. I'm italian and german. Germans hated nazi's. Spain destroyed an amazing empire, and in the long run hasn't succeeded much. Italy is the asswhiper for the catholic church.

@MrVanDaak emperor = king (with relationship to the pope)
->the president of the republik had no throne = no emperor
"someone told us" "we dont want a democracy"
What? In 1918 (BEFORE CAPITULATION) soldiers were deserting and forced the emperor to resign.
After that the Weimarer Republik was founded and a capitulation was signed.
Its problem was that it had the president as a very powerfull conservative part who caused after the stock market crash 1929 braking the democracy.

It is called "Federal Republic of Germany" or simply "Germany" today.
(In german: "Bundesrepublik Deutschland" / "Deutschland")
Nothing more!
In medieval times it was called "Holy Roman Empire" or in german:
"Heiliges Römisches Reich".
It was a Reich because it had an emeror which stood in a special relationship to pope and the church.
Later on the appellation Reich was more used for propaganda issues.
Please check your knowlege next time before you post shit. ;)

Between: 1806 and 1871 no emperor - wasnt called a Reich.
Between: 1918 and 1933 no emperor - wasnt called a Reich
Between: 1933 and 1945 no emperor - Reich for propaganda issues

@RomanLegioXx ah that's a common misconception, they were actually german, not roman it was a credit to the catholic church not to the roman empire that was before them
twankism 1 year ago
@twankism Oh yes it was a credit to the Roman Empire. The German kings regarded themselves in a tradition of a never-ending Roman Empire brought to them by Charlemagne. It was believed that the end of the days would come if the Roman Empire ever ceased to exist.

is this the eastern holy roman empire?
97Wc 1 year ago
@97Wc No - it is the forerunner of Germany and Austria. The official name was Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. You will find a long article in wikipedia.

@BERNTRR I remember there was a similar problem in vanilla M2TW, if you write your Cd key's zeros as o's, then you might not be able to play online, try re-installing the game.

Parham1995 1 year ago
The controls are really straightforward too if you just want get a bit of practise in on the quick battles .
Its just move mouse left click and right click pretty much till you get deeper into it.
Im winning battles already lol and make mincemeat of the enemy.
I have got it on easy mode though being a total noob.
The thing thats really cool is saving your battle then replaying it and moving around wherever you like with the camera.
Addictive stuff!
I cannot praise this game highly enough.

zenoist2 1 year ago
@zenoist2 I'm going to buy it soon; what's it like when you initially play it? Take care amigo!
HULLOHULLO15 1 year ago
@HULLOHULLO15 its brilliant! theres a quick battle mode with an advisor I'm on right now to get you used to moving units around etc and it saves your battles so you can replay them move the camera at different angles.
See what youve done right and wrong etc.
I love it for the close up battles where people are hacking away or youre chasing a fleeing enemy.
Cavalry charges are cool too.
You can replay it as often as you like and move the camera anywhere each time different.
Love it!

XDlosDominicans 1 year ago
@XDlosDominicans Many people also forget the Romans had a monachary before the Republic (753BC-509BC) and the fact that the Roman Empire SURVIVED in the East until 1453 AD, just under 1000 years after the Western Roman Empire had fallen, as the Byzantium Empire, so overall Rome lasted from 753Bc-1453AD (2206 years!)
Woffled 1 year ago
@Woffled well, i think i was talking about the Western Empire O_O but yeah. after i posted my comment i made a research and there was the Monarchy. so after i was like * F@CK!!!*

why is Germany called the Holy Roman Empire? Germany was the ENEMIES of Rome, and Byzantine is the only one with direct descendants/ancestors to Rome...

@WolfytheWolf5667 Recheck your history books ;)
Angelimir 1 year ago
@WolfytheWolf5667 Because at this time, Germany did not exist as a nation. It was a collection of states and a kingdom, all united into a single entity called the Holy Roman Empire, which was originally established by Charlemagne. It was lead by an emperor, who were originally crowned by the Pope, but that later changed. It lasted until Napoleon invaded it back in the early 19th century.
You can also read up on it on Wikipedia!
BasileusNil 1 year ago
@BasileusNil maybe not as a nation (whatever that means in medieval times) but it sure was a kingdom. The German kings styled themselves as Roman emperors. I personally don't like how the HRE is portrayed in M2TW since it denies the fact that there indeed was a German self consciousness and the "Roman Empire" was sort of a honorary title.
MacX1985 1 year ago
@WolfytheWolf5667

@Beakle: The Holy Roman Empire is under powered, the only good unique unit they have is the Gothic knight.

After the 30 years war there was no central power in the empire anymore.

how can you play the other factions .instead of the only top 5 factions at the beginning of the grand campaign? can an1 tell me?!.
57dragonball 2 years ago
u need either to destroy the faction u want(conquer it all,i prefer leaving the job to other factions then when it remains only like 1 or 2 regions go out of campaign and u'll find ur factions playable)also u can just hack the file,u'll find vids just search for it,and its just too easy
GothN00b 2 years ago
If u beat a faction in the Grand Campaign, it will afterwards become playable.

@danuisortiz Hey, sry but I'm from Eastern Germany (Mecklenburg) and my impression is that there are far more left-winged people compared to right-winged ones. MacX1985 1 year ago
