All you need is rear-wheel drive; helps if you have a front engine, too. I've done them with automatics and manuals, same basic concept with both.

With the auto transmissions I've done it on, if you peg the accelerator, it forces a downshift which results in as good of a doughnut as you can get in an automatic. Snowy or wet surfaces help a lot.

You don't need slicks for this. In fact, slicks make it a lot harder to do. What you need here are old, hard and very small rear tires, minimizing rear end grip and also making it a whole lot cheaper.
