It's like a weird fusion of an MPC and guitar hero controller. Would be good for street performances, but I still prefer the sounds of a real drum kit.
It's actually called a ZenDrum - we heard this group a couple of years ago at TRCC (they were called Bach To The Future)- our Band Director bought one soon after they performed. :)

no tension.great sound ,maybe great musicians,but...no tension.and plying piano on keybord-maybe organizers where poor.but as a pianist you have piano)digital=.still..great piano p+layier.waiting for somthing
I give the guy alot of credit fpr playing that tune. There many guys that would even attempt to play that. Kudos...he has nice chops. That drum gadget is awesome...lol I have never seen anyone play that! Cool.
This cover is approached from a fundamentally different style than the original version of Spain. Chick approached the melody with a sense of harmonic and rhythmic interest aided by excellent phrasing. This version seems to suggest less emphasis on the truly melodic improv of bebop, favoring idioms of pop, new age, and other 'light' musics. If you're looking for "real jazz," this style isn't your swingingest choice.
"real jazz"? Well I don't care what kind of historian you are. But if Chick Corea plays jazz, its pretty dam real. Maybe the phrase your looking for is traditional jazz. But much of the best "real jazz" is far from that.
I disagree. Traditional jazz implies a specific way of approaching a tune, a harmonic and rhythmic language, and bebop idioms. Listen to Bud Powell, Dexter Gordon, or Charlie Parker. These guys are playing the changes differently from the way Chick, Herbie, and Joe Lovano play the changes. In both cases, it's truly in a jazz style. What I mean with the video at hand here is... I don't see this as improvisation in a true jazz style: modern, traditional, or otherwise.
You're interpretation is legit... I mean everyone is entitled to an opinion. However, first off Bud, the Pres and the Bird are not "traditional" Jazz. You have to go back further than the 40s or 50s to call it traditional. Second, DT-Trio does a fine job and they actually play thru the changes similar to Chick. Chick is by no means a bopper...
Third, Jazz is an evolving idiom... don't stiffle it by being overly critical... Lastly, from my experience as a player, musicians that critique so strongly have a deficit in the playing department.
The guys chops are not quite Chick, but not many are up to that comparison... but the version is by no means "fundamentally" different. This cover valid and worthy of a listen. Get a clue, support the art and stop being a hater!
Indeed, very strange comments from the people...I have a lot of experience of musicians talking and talking really well before a gig and than playing a shit!
Quite often I belong to this class...
:D
anyway, a very nice version of Spain, keep on playing and sharing...
I'm amazed at the responses to our rendition of Spain... It really brings out a lot of strong feelings in people. Well, keep the comments coming... it's very interesting to get feedback... I guess one has to be ready what's coming when they stick their necks out!
oh man the e-drum sucks! he´s playing the zendrum cause it looks spezial on stage, i think. i wouldn´t use it to play a latin-jazz tune - if i want to sound a bir electric and my spacy, i would use it but in my appinion you can not use sounds which are trying to be realistic.
Thank you all for the comments. We really enjoy playing the song, and I don't think it is anything like Chick's version, but it is a real thrill to play.
they are way too much on top of the time, its too rushed. I hate the feeling, so lame. sometimes theres more to playing like chick that just learning his charts
This may be a stupid question -- but isn't the purpose of covering tunes to sound a bit different and add yourself into the piece?
I dunno. Really, if it sounded exactly like chick I would've probably been disapointed. The world/ especially youtube has enough clones. If I want to listen to someone trying to sound exactly like Chick, I'll listen to Chick.
I give these guys much credit for having enough guts to challenge a chick corea tune. In the jazz world, too many great musician never record chick's music. Chick Corea who is a living God of Jazz Piano is a impossible jazz pianist to copy! Great nerves!

AlexLococo 3 years ago
He's playing a Zendrum, which is sort of like Futureman's drumitar. It triggers MIDI samples of drums, so he basically is wearing a drum set.

Great sound and it does sound subtle to Chick Corea.
No matter how many versions I hear of this, I stand for the original of the guitar by Rodrigo.
Excellent in everyaspect.
