I have this on VHS. It's from a movie/video that was sold back in the early 80s which might be out of print nowadays. I believe the film might be called Long Time Gone or something like that.
What a treat 4+20 was at the end, there. I loved watching Joni Mitchell listen to that song; that's how I listened to it the first time, it just grabs you.
Does anybody know what show it is, where you see the short scenes of find the cost of freedom and laughing? Is there a recording or a video of the whole show out there? Looks awesome:)
Whenever they had a meeting with management, Crosby would pull out his crippler pot, and they would drool and nod on it while he said, "Ok, here's what we're going to do..."
It's hard to believe that this passed for profound commentary. Crosby was bright and insightful, but his overwhelming narcissism always got in the way.
@nootaramus Stills was pretty messed up on the blow, too. While he and Croz were still a duo, a local DJ played one of their demos on the air, identifying them as the "frozen noses".
@deadhead8979 That's "Black Queen". There's an alright version on his first solo album, a drawn out version on 4 way street (live) and what I think is the best of the three on his archive "Just Roll Tape".
@casper1918 I don't think so.Maybe it sounds funny to hear his stoned pronouncements from those times today or maybe you just plain don't like the guy (I know many don't).But someone who has written the songs he has could never be accused of being a 'dim bulb'.
@InTimeAllMustChange Yes, I think Stephen is frustrated with David and quotes his own lyrics to him, to show he is a hypocrite!! Not sure what the argument was about though!
@lemonbade Yeah right. I seen the full footage of that clip once and Crosby was at an absolute low drug point in his life and completely hard to deal with.and Stills was frustrated with him and was quoting some of Crosby's own earlier lyrics at him in just frustrated anger.
crosby bought me a beer on Catailna -i discretely dumped it in a plant.. he said the girl singer on stage with me was what brought him in.. she declined a record deal to go hikiking up 101..she was killed later in a car wreck.near Carmel... she was beautiful and had the voice of an angel-but i don't remember her name. so we got the queens of pitch correction now--crosby & i know what we lost-and so it goes--guitar pioneer JoJo Clark
@jc8812 I would like to know who you are (im sorry that i don't as of yet) but if you could contact me i would be in great appreciation. If contact me i would love to talk.
Their arguments were epic. They were four big, opinionated independent singer/songwriters, and they had their differences. They also left us some memorable music.
people dont realize how cool David Crsoby was back in the day. They see him now and think hes just some old weird geezer. That guy was a legend, chicks were all over him. His voice was arguably the best in the group. That scene where stephen stills yells at crosby is awesome.
@dumbbina Why don't you ask him? He has a 13-year-old daughter (the product of his sperm donation to Julie Cypher). My guess is that he wants her to enjoy her youth as he enjoyed his.
The version of Find the Cost of Freedom at 3:28, played at a higher note, is just magic. If anyone knows were I could get the full version of this clip or if anyone knows of an artist who plays this song in the same key, please let me know. Thanks.

This is a TERRIFIC find. What a mesmerizingly stark composition from Stephen Stills! Guitar-playing so haunting that time hangs suspended as each note unfolds.
Stills was so fucking great. Some of his guitar playing is just beyond compare. I love his song "Special Care" with the Springfield, though he did almost all of it by himself.
The Coattail Rider pontificates on "The Scene, Man...."............. laughable for someone of his ilk to come down from the leather couches (reported by Grace Slick) in his ivory tower and comment on how society should be when he never struggled. I like when Stills tells Cros (lying in a hammock, no less) he's not going to cop-out "an inch to fear" (line from "Almost Cut My Hair" written by Cros........) and calls him a hypocrite....... well said.
@Rikk303 I think all of this footage is from Joni's Nash period, although from the look she shoots Stephen around 8:53, you can tell that other ideas had crossed her mind.
@Seasass Well spotted! Must be a bit of a pisser to have your private life under the microscope when all you wanna do is have a blow and make music. I'm forever indebted to Joni for putting my name in song anyway. That was her "Blue" period as I recall...maybe that's why they use blue liquid in sanitary towel adverts? When all is said and done though, CSN (& a bit of Y) were an incredible blend of voices and musical talent. Shame the booze and drugs messed them up.
Crosby: the utlimate hippy. Lucky to survive decades of substance abuse. Lucky in his talent, associates. A survivor because of his work ethic. Stephen Stills had 50% of the temperament in the group. They are so young here. Stills had his recording studio in Malibu Canyon; pictured there. Interesting to hear Stills put down Crosby with his own song lyric here. The famous three point harmony they achieved was a revelation even to them.
When I lived in D.C. back in '78, at an art fair on the Mall all of a sudden I found myself face-to-face with Stephen Stills. So I said "Hi." And he said, "Hey man," or something. Not being an autograph hound, that was it. But what I thought was cool, was how he was just out among the public doing his thing.
I know some of you posters love to rant about how great weed is, but I tell you what. Trying to work with musicians who can't do without the bud for one fucking session is one big pain in the ass. The tempos on the music fluctuate too much, vocal cues are missed and it ends up being a big waste of effort. It's a shame because someone like Crosby is enormously talented without all the bullshit.
@petsounds75 Weed? How quaint. Their fans might have smoked weed, but the artists themselves had graduated to other stuff for sure by the time CSN was formed. At least, Crosby and Stills had.
