They are called paragliders not hanggliders and what kind of flight plan would you suggest a paraglider pilot shout file then? Perhaps something really accurate along the lines of " I will be heading somewhere roughly down wind from my start point, not sure exactly what time my flight will start or end or how far i'll get, it kinda depends on the weather but keep an eye out for me, i could be anywhere at anytime." :-))
I have never had a 'near miss' always good separation, but I have a clear memory of the first time I saw para gliders. Coming out of Shoreham, en route to Lydd. At first sight the para gliders looked like confetti, enough to tell me to stay clear, closer to, I could see exactly what they were. I was in a 152 at 100kts (ish), at 400+kts, it could have been a different story.
Chuck Norris would of jumped from the paraglider, unaided onto the back of the tornado and sucker punched it to the ground before jumping back to the paraglider....... All in 0.5 seconds.
The beeping noise is the paraglider pilots vario which gives an audible indication to the pilot of climb or descent. High pitched for climb, low pitched for descent. The rate of beeping increases or decreases depending on how fast or slow the paraglider is climbing or descending, so, an essential tool for pilots!!
I gaurentee that pilot would have not gone anywhere near the area if they had known there was paragliding going on. Also, paragliders should check to ensure they are not playing around low altitude VFR military training routes!
This site has been used for paragliding for over 10 years and is well known to Hawk pilots at RAF Valley so this hazzard should have been passed on to the Tornado pilot so that he could avoid this spot. It's a big sky and this is a very small part of it and definately not a part of a VFR millitary training route, if it was, no one would fly paragliders from this spot for obvious reasons.
These guys aren't flying VFR as such, the aircraft is, as far as I know, being flown by the onboard ground level radar. There's no way they would see or avoid a paraglider.
Actualy, it was a Friday so the Tornado pilot was ok to fly that day but should have been informed of the potential hazzards by RAF Valley who know the site well.
I think my brother landed for a chamge of underwear shortly after this :-)
A couple of years ago I was just topping out in a blue thermal over Horwich @ 3,200' when a lightplane flew about 800' lower but directly under me. It was well spooky. No sound but looking down they shift! I've always wondered if he noticed me up there. :)
@berzerkrobot This video was taken using a wide angle lens so due to the optics creating perspective distortion (distance between objects in the field of view are not representative of the real distance as it would be if viewed through a standard lense so the perspective is stretched for a wideangle lens) so, it actualy looks further away from the paraglider on this video than it was in reality. Hope that clears things up for you :-)
the tornado pilot was aware he or her was there so he went underneath. They are probably quite far apart at your angle they look closer. I was at school once same thing happened a grob and a tornado the whole school shut their eyes lol.
This happened on a hill used regularly for paragliding about a mile south of Llandewi brefi on 12th June 2009 and the paraglider pilot in the shot is my brother!!!!! The video was taken by a friend of his, also airborn at the time and was shot from a helmet cam, the sound you can hear (not the jet) is his vario.
what was that thing that looked like a jet flying past the parashooter?

Paragliding among jet fighter aircraft seems like a fantastic idea

Where is the near miss? I only see a near hit.
Damn I hate false advertisement in youtube video titles.

seemed close - but i think its an optical illlusion

There is a jet, there is a paraglider, but the hell no tornado!
Please make the movie again with proper scenery.

The hang glider's didn't file a flight plan. I'm surprised the FAA wasn't called.

@MrVixpix I don't know what I'm talking about. I don't even know what a flight plan is or how its used.

@cdoftx Why would they call the FAA? The USA doesn't have any jurisdiction in Wales!

That was a Sunday. Naughty naughty man in a tornado.
At such a distance I would of bombed it to the ground in case the wash came my way :(

@MrVixpix Damn straight! A NOTAM should have been published, informing all pertinant crew of the paragliding activity.

40m ..i don't think so. A tornado is about 17m long so you can make a comparison Looks like it passed about 300 yards away. Still scary close though!
