  • If anyone lives in Dominican Republic, ask around, I'm sure people are fond of him. Jesus Rodriguez and they called him Mamajuana a lot, I have a photo of my grandfather here with Tatico and the mamajuana they used to make. A lot of people were looking for him in but he already moved to New York. Check Wikipedia, it will not say who invented it. That's because they haven't found him yet. I know it's been a long time, but I'm hoping someone here can give me more information before he dies.

  • i can't speak spanish well so i'm sorry, if someone can translate this comment that would be great. my grandfather, jesus rodriguez has a history with these people and i'm wondering if anyone here knows tatico or the band he performed with? my grandfather used to play with them back in dominican republic in the 1960's & 1970's before tatico died. my grandfather is also responsible for inventing mamajuana, it was his nickname growing up there. so if anyone remembers him please let me know.

  • . Cumbia started in the northern coast of South America, what is now Colombia and Panama, mainly in or around Cartagena during the period of Spanish colonization. Spain used its ports to import African slaves, who tried to preserve their musical traditions and also turned the drumming and dances into a courtship ritual. Cumbia was mainly performed with just drums and claves.

  • Yep Trinidad has a Spanish and Venezuelan connection !

There are still some trinidadians that speak Spanish !

  • es factible se haya inspirado en estas cumbias instrumentales para componer las siete pasadas y adan y eva

  • @MrKALANCE yes they are and Tatico is the King of Perico Ripiao

  • Your spanish is really good actually !!!! Are you in honors or AP or IB?

  • You should do some Trinidadian music. After all, Trinidad was a Spanish colony until 1797

  • Yo pienso que CUMBIA fue un genero de musica COLOMBIANA ?

This does not sound that much like traditional cumbia.

Although there is a Cuban connection to cumbia !

  • @chsn09 yea it is but tatico is the king of merengue tipico and one of the best accordionists ever from DR and he recorded this beat around the 50's or 60's

  • Me Encanta ! This is a nice song ! It gets me movin ! lol

  • @chsn09 tatico did a good job of doing this tune, it actually sounds very similar to the original (search cumbia sampuesana by Jose Joaquin Bettin Martinez).

  • @groseron Interesting I never really realized this! Could you send me the music of this other person! I love these types of music! Is the other artist you mentioned from the Dominican Republic?

  • @chsn09 no, the other artist is colombian. cumbia is colombian, but what I meant to say was that tatico did a really good rendition of the original. I'm colombian myself, but I've always admired and respected dominican music and musicians/composers very much (I play with them in real life in a local merengue/bachata band) . tatico is a major one.

  • @groseron Oh k bueno! Colombia en la casa jaja! ¿Cual parte de Colombia eres de? Yeah I was saying cumbia is Colombian! Actually the origins if what is now known as cumbia began in what is now Panama, which of course we know Panama was an integral part of Colombia until 1903! Yeah I see what you are saying now and I will look for the original song cuz of I luz me some cumbia! Dominican music is great I love it! What is the name of your band?

  • @chsn09 to be specific cumbia is from present-day panama, stretching all the way to the cartagena area. I am from santiago de cali (better known simply as cali) in the department of valle del cauca. Although where I'm from salsa reigns supreme, I grew up listening to a little bit of everything (vallenato, cumbia, currulao, joropo, trova, etc.); either way, salsa is still my favourite. The band I play with is a cover band called concepto.

  • @groseron Yes it is true! It is said that cumbia originated in the panama and Darien to Cartagena de las indias region hence Panama proper and also Santa Marta! Eres de Santiago De Cali? Vamos joder' fuera de aqui! I love Caleñ@s! Lol! Great to meet you!

  • @groseron Yes Cali is the Salsa capital of the world like so many Salsa championship winners and the best dancers come from there! Willy and LaLa Garcia, Fruko y sus Tesos, and Grupo Niche and many more are my favorites! Yeah I love salsa and also Colombian musical styles! Me encanta todo!

  • musica preciosa para colombianos y mexicanos......

  • great.........
