A year after this video (with only £1,000 of engine work done by me), that Volvo did a run that made it the 4th fastest Volvo in the UK, of 13.91, the video is in my list.
@djskitzy74 it was beaten into 5th place a few months later by the flying banana @ brighton seafront, just in case anyone has a discrepancy with the "fastest volvo" placings in the comments, in know what you lot are like.....

That volvo 850 would of bin standerd with that time. 225bhp. Skyline standerd as well 250bhp. Volvo is heavyer and front wheel drive but still shows the skyline up. Skyline has a very poorly desined gear box. Loses to much power at the wheel. U keep ur over priced chav car haha. Be a sheep.

They are not horrbile, they are what you get when you have a project. Its not like every tuned car is putting out maximum horsepower, its a work in progress :)

The only car to be outlawed by every racing body was the BNR32 GT-R Skyline.. The fastest production car around the ring the R33 GT-R... the Skyline GT-R is another class of car buddy. You can beat a gts-t in a race, but not a GT-R.

Yeah turboing a non turbo is more expensive in the long run, easier to just buy a T5 and be done with it. Other option is drop a turbo engine/ecu into it, but that has it's own issues, just buy a T5.

I can see only 1 thing you can do with it to get some serious power.
Sell it and buy an 850 T5-R. No jokes man. Unless you have an inheritance coming your way soon, making that fast is not feasible. Great car though. I have one as a daily driver.
The guy is right i'm afraid. If you want more power you're going to have to get a T5. It doesn't have to be an R as the standard T5 is quick enough and if you want more power you just re-map it and then you'll get even more power than a T5-R .
Performance modifications such as exhaust systems and CAI are expensive and will realistically yield around 5bhp between them on your car. Save up if you have to but buy a T5, 280bhp is easily obtainable from a few mods and more than double your torque!
i have dedicated my life and most of my bank to my 850 t-5r has over 630HP not including turbo boost getting the upgrade to be able to get past 500 hits the pocket HARD lol

First off, to the Volvo haters, Volvos are FAR from slow & I'll explain why. I own a 855 GLT. It's not the turbo GLT. My 855 may lag @ the light but it has no problem getting to 140mph whatsoever. Yeah, 140mph. Stock Hondas? Forget it. Now T-5s & T-5Rs? They already come with turbo. That's right, high end models already come with turbos. You know, the kind that Honda owners usually have to give up their kids for. Other than that, we have loads of torque. Hondas don't. They can't be compared.
There are nothing but Honda dickriders up here in CT. You don't really see too many of the REAL giants, just pissy little Hondas. The last time I saw a Supra up here was 7 years ago.

I own a 94 850 too, though mine is stock. All i've done to it is replace the stereo with an awesome setup (2 alpine amps, all new speakers and 2 type R subs). It's old, but it's a strong car!
My mother also owns a S80 T5, quick car, but if only it were a manual... Ah well. Volvos are often shunned because everyone thinks they're slow, but a lot of these higher trim Volvos will destroy many cars with light tuning :)

I'm currently in the process of fitting a 19T turbo & downpipe, with a set of blue injectors, an exhaust manifold from an 04 plate S60R, a throttle housing froma volvo 960, and I'm gonna reverse the flow through the intercooler dropping the intake temps by 40 degrees C.... bring on the R33's, My Volvo is gonna be waaaay faster down the drag strip than a 1989 Ferrari Testarossa....

A friend of mine has a light tuned T5, stick shift, and it has a best ET of 13,4.
NO boost increes, stock interior, 40mm lowering springs, yellow koni adjustibles, 3"exhaust, cold air intake, TurboXS RFL BOV and "sticky" tires. That's all that's done to the car. So don't say Volvos are slow. Just take a little look around here, a Volvo 850T5 KILLS a Ferrari ;)

it was an R32 not a R34 there's a distinct difference in the engine performance from the 32 to the 34. Besides I can see a volvo beating a 32 if the chassis was stripped to bare bones or if he runs the right amount of boost but 15's aren't all that impressive to be honest. My I30 does low 16's stock. I've clocked it with friends several times just for the hell of it

Yeah turboing a non turbo is more expensive in the long run, easier to just buy a T5 and be done with it. Other option is drop a turbo engine/ecu into it, but that has it's own issues, just buy a T5.

I can see only 1 thing you can do with it to get some serious power.
Sell it and buy an 850 T5-R. No jokes man. Unless you have an inheritance coming your way soon, making that fast is not feasible. Great car though. I have one as a daily driver.

The guy is right i'm afraid. If you want more power you're going to have to get a T5. It doesn't have to be an R as the standard T5 is quick enough and if you want more power you just re-map it and then you'll get even more power than a T5-R .
Performance modifications such as exhaust systems and CAI are expensive and will realistically yield around 5bhp between them on your car. Save up if you have to but buy a T5, 280bhp is easily obtainable from a few mods and more than double your torque!

First off, to the Volvo haters, Volvos are FAR from slow & I'll explain why. I own a 855 GLT. It's not the turbo GLT. My 855 may lag @ the light but it has no problem getting to 140mph whatsoever. Yeah, 140mph. Stock Hondas? Forget it. Now T-5s & T-5Rs? They already come with turbo. That's right, high end models already come with turbos. You know, the kind that Honda owners usually have to give up their kids for. Other than that, we have loads of torque. Hondas don't. They can't be compared.

I own a 94 850 too, though mine is stock. All i've done to it is replace the stereo with an awesome setup (2 alpine amps, all new speakers and 2 type R subs). It's old, but it's a strong car!
My mother also owns a S80 T5, quick car, but if only it were a manual... Ah well. Volvos are often shunned because everyone thinks they're slow, but a lot of these higher trim Volvos will destroy many cars with light tuning :)

How come you did 15.2 on a stock T5 ? You are supposed to be running 222 hp on the 850 and on my S70 T5 I'm running 236 and I did 15.3. Do you have a MBC or someting ? Are you manual ?

the stock 850 turbo runs 222 to the crank not the wheels and runs a 15.2 1/4 mile
again the s70 runs 236 to the crank not the wheels hes right if you got that dynoed you would probably be around 200 to the wheels...
get an ecu tune to about 17 psi and your looking at aboue 285 to the crank and like 250 to the wheels

I'm currently in the process of fitting a 19T turbo & downpipe, with a set of blue injectors, an exhaust manifold from an 04 plate S60R, a throttle housing froma volvo 960, and I'm gonna reverse the flow through the intercooler dropping the intake temps by 40 degrees C.... bring on the R33's, My Volvo is gonna be waaaay faster down the drag strip than a 1989 Ferrari Testarossa....

A Volvo 850 T5 doing a 15 on the 1/4 mile is slow for the car.
Must be a stock auto or something.
A friend of mine has a light tuned T5, stick shift, and it has a best ET of 13,4.
NO boost increes, stock interior, 40mm lowering springs, yellow koni adjustibles, 3"exhaust, cold air intake, TurboXS RFL BOV and "sticky" tires. That's all that's done to the car. So don't say Volvos are slow. Just take a little look around here, a Volvo 850T5 KILLS a Ferrari ;)

it was an R32 not a R34 there's a distinct difference in the engine performance from the 32 to the 34. Besides I can see a volvo beating a 32 if the chassis was stripped to bare bones or if he runs the right amount of boost but 15's aren't all that impressive to be honest. My I30 does low 16's stock. I've clocked it with friends several times just for the hell of it
