This is awesome. Great mood music for when you're stuck in traffic waiting for the moment to punch it. I also like to play this song when I'm driving slow trying to find a spot in a crowded parking garage.
I can remember watching this movie for the first time with may dad...he always loved the part when the mustang appears in the rear view mirror of the charger......This car chase was one of the few things I ever watched with him where he cranked up the volume....fantastic memory this movie and this tune bring me back to.
@trouserclips Remember airbrushing a breakdown truck in Peterhead, Scotland with images from this movie. It was on the road for a week, and some thug chucked a brick at it !!...took me a week to do it...never got round to repairing it, and the brick landed on Steve McQueen's face, made him look like bloody Sylvester Stallone...bastard!!
@TheNorthernSoulKing It is very simliar, but compared to the version in the movie, It seems the drums are much more proiment in this version starting at about 1:56. Still great music though.
Its amazing how well thought out music can set up an amazing piece of cinematography. This is a class example. certain Spagetti westerns also spring to mind.
@drc1981 ~ He sure did. The police movie drama themes from the 60's & 70's give me goose bumps. I was a kid in the Bronx, NY coming up on this and I remember all of them. I was 3 yrs old when Bullitt came out but did not see the movie until around 1974 or so. Every Cop in America should start their day off listening to this soundtrack or one as devastating as this before he/she starts their tour of duty for the day. Hell, I'd be ready for the world after hearing this!
When the full bassline kicks in at about the 2:00 mark in is epic . Reason to upgrade your computer sound. The progressions really give the feeling of shifting and piston pumping.
The guy is such a genius composer that the muscle car exhaust sound rumble is really integral to the music. Not only that but its coordinated perfectly with the visual track. Try getting this with CGI and synth tracking!
It was a great era of cinema sympho-jazz orchestras. Unrepeatible Lalo Schifrin music. What a sound of a horns and bass - music instruments here like engine working of Ford Mustang and Dodge Charger with devlish vibrations at the end of low horns. And ofcourse only mister Steve Mcqueen on the mind, tracing Charger and mobs in it. Outstanding soundtrack. The best film chase and auto stunt work ever. Bill Hickman was the best. Thank you
@Mrandrew7777, yeah, those gravelly horns start sort of snorting quietly along when McQueen's profile comes into close up. Love the way the strings swerve along with the bad guys making a U turn and turning right to go up the hill after Bullit. People always associate Schifrin with Dirty Harry and MI but this soundtrack is the bomb!
@RedWine2go ~ Hell yeah. Natural chase at that. It certainly came before the classic chases in The French Connection, The Seven Ups, Mc Q, The Longest Yard, Mr. Majestyk just to name a few. This was the best and the soundtrack, Oh My God!!!
Fantastic music this and also its good to hear it without the sound of car engines roaring but listening to it you can visualise this great car chase from the 60's
Brilliant stuff.............................cheers for posting top marks and favourite
@trouserclips True that, I drive a little Mazda Miata with a 1.6...lookin to get my hands on a Ford Crown Vic ex cop car for the winter...cravin the power of a big gas guzzlin V8...in any case, love the vid, great pics :)
Great music, Lalo Schifrin just takes me back to the great films of the 60's & 70's. But I have to disagree with you on the Ford V8 being the best sound in the world. IMOO the Rolls Royce Merlin takes some beating and what really hits the spot for me is the Rolls Royce Griffon.
Still thanks for sharing this great piece of music. Brill!!
Thanks to you all for watching my Video, It's is 1 year old, and nearly 30,000 hit's. Thanks for watching, and Happy new Year to you all. trouserclips.
Before this movie, the "car chases" were cars going at a normal speed, then the film was sped up. This is the grand-daddy of all car-chase scenes! No matter if there were obvious goofs, like the cars you see over and over (the Volkswagen, for example . . .) and, for people who live here in San Francisco, them skipping all over the city. (I particularly like the one where they are on Marina Blvd. going toward the Golden Gate Bridge then are down on Mansell St. near McLaren Park!)
Yes. . . . If you're familiar with The City, or, you live there also, I live in The Sunset District. Some years back, there was an article in The San Francisco Chronicle about the making of "Bullitt" and they talked about how long it took to do the car-chase scene. They also included a map of The City that showed all the locations the car chase was in, and where they skipped from one area to another. It was great!
True, but The Road Warrior almost re-invented the car chase. George Miller placed the viewer mostly in the driver's seat, not as a bystander on the road.
Both Bullitt and The Road Runner are edited scenes.
For the best un-edited continuous driving watch Claude Lelouch's Rendesvous in Paris from 1976. No retakes there or edits.
Yes, I remember that effect in The Road Warrior. That was great. I'll have to check out that movie Rendezvous in Paris; I had not previously heard of it. By the way, yes, McLaren Park is another big park here in The City; it's in the southern part. It was named after John McLaren, the man instrumental in the formation of Golden Gate Park, and who was its first superintendent.
Well, basically Rendezvous in Paris is called C'etait un rendezvous in its native language and its not a movie merely some 10 minute high speed driving through the narrow streets of Paris. A camera was mounted on the front of the car and some Formula 1 driver, they believe Didier Pironi, was driving the car up to 130mph on Paris city streets. It sounds like a Ferrari 12 cylinder but rumour has it was just one of those monster Mercedes 450SEL 6,9's
Well in reality the Mustang needed to be repaired after each jump when the scenes were shot. Whereas the Charger could survive any jump. At least that's the story.
Ford gave them 2 Mustangs and 2 Fairlanes for the movie. Max Balchowski, who prepped the cars, said the Fairlanes wouldn't hold up to the abuse and recommended a Dodge. So they bought two black Chargers at a Dodge dealer. The first jump where the Mustang bottoms out actually crushed the oil pan and broke the steering armature. They also did shock tower bracing and magnafluxing. The Chargers were unmodified, save for higher rate rear springs (which is why the car sits funny), and they held up.
Thanks. I remember watching a Top Gear episode where they were driving a 68 Charger and mentioned Bullitt, and that what the audience didn't know was that the Mustang needed constant repairs when shooting the scenes, whereas the Charger could do all that no sweat. Anyway, the sales of the Mustang went sky high after Bullitt so people "bought" the scene.
It seems all the fools of the 21'st century also buy the half mile dead straight jump with the Mustang in the Gone in 60 seconds remake...
Try and look for the Original M-P-S. It's only on import and they're the songs from 1968. It has the original "Shifting Gears" from the film. Schifrin is a genius.
Finally, someone like me who sees this film for what it really is - Bill Hickman, the R/T 440(s), and this song. Been studying this film, it's cast, cars, music and location since my first viewing in 1968. Even bought a '68 Charger, and to this day, was one of the best riding and handling cars I've ever owned.
Bill Hickman is the 'silent" star in the movie. Best stunt driver and is seen in many "chase" scenes in movies around late "60's, 70's. I am a mustang fan (have Bullitt mustang in 1/18th scale) but "68 Dodge Charger one of the best looking cars ever. It performed even better....it ran circles around the Mustang for this movie so much so as they had to give it (ie. handicap) the smallest tires I 've seen for a Charger. Still it was fun watching it throw off 4+ hubcaps eh. ")
How could you upload this video with the song? I tried to upload another one with a Schifrin song and Youtube cut the song because of the WB copyrights...
Thanks, Rover V8 Solid as a Rock. I rallied a Mini Clubman 1340 for a while in the 80's but it started to cost to much. Have a cini film some where, must put it on You Tube.
Lalo Schifrin was the single most talented score master in Hollywood History. Bullitt and Dirty Harry would be nowhere near the same without Schifrin's nail-biting jazz trickery heightening the suspense.

Lalo Schifrin was the single most talented score master in Hollywood History. Bullitt and Dirty Harry would be nowhere near the same without Schifrin's nail-biting jazz trickery heightening the suspense.
