This song describes life perfectly. It's highs and lows, and how they follow each other and what you really have to do is enjoy the highs as much as you can because something might come and throw you down again. So bow down to live your life, live your life with humility.
Nirvana and Pearl Jam were great bands but for my money Soundgarden was the best band to come out of the Seattle/grunge hype.In fact, they were probably one of the best bands to come out of the 1980/90's.
I remember when I was in high school I wrote Head Down on a desk in one of my classes 'cause I had this song stuck in my head, and the next day seeing that someone had written ''your fucking throat'' below it. Haha 8-P
THIS SONG TAKES ME BACK TO MY GRUNGE YEARS. FOR ME THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE SONGS ON THE ALBUM. PABLOPJ86 YOU ARE RIGHT THE SONG IS BITTERSWEET, HYPNOTIC AND RHYTHMICAL.
Saw Cornell on tour this spring. What's a trip is that he was taller than me, about 6'2" or 6'3". Anyway, he played a bunch of Soundgarden tunes as well as those other things he did (and for all you guitarists buying those stupid TAB books, STOP - they aren't written right; Cornell said they wrote those with weird tunings, so the chords might not theoretically exist). Anyway, he did this thing with feedback on a guitar, man, and it took the Hendrix thing to a whole new level, WOW.
When you compare Badmotorfinger to the last two albums, it's no surprise that for the last 2 albums Cornell wrote the lyrics AND nearly all the music. The music took on an identity suddenly that surpassed just being "grunge" to something approaching "art music". That's no small feat. I agree with anyone on here who says this sounds just as modern now as it did back then - for some reason, man, this stuff is just advanced music. Saw Chris Cornell on tour this spring and wait ti
Excellent statement about social paradoxes. This music is just genius, too. Anyone hear how Soundgarden's coming back together? Can't wait to hear Thayil w/ Cornell again because no way could Audioslave have reached this artistic height - those last 2 SG albums? They're up there with Sabbath, yes, and with Floyd, too. Just trippy, intelligent, timeless social commentary, hardcore riffs mixed with these hallucinogenic fugues. Badass.
The effect used on their faces on the cover reminds me a bit of Black Sabbath's Paranoid cover. However, although Sabbath is great, Soundgarden blows them out of the water, at least in my opinion.
@DrummerGIRL6688 I agree, I favor Superunknown. And I hope that with their next album coming, it goes in the same style as this one. :) I'll still be buying it regardless.
@chapinguy look, I know my instruments well enough to know what a snare sounds like. The sound I'm talking about is very, very hard to hear without headphones, but it's deffinately not a snare drum
@MrPjctv Spring? Are you fucking kidding me? Oh well, Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains are also coming out with new albums, plus Screaming Trees has an (Unfortunately, it's only on iTunes right now. Yes, that's right, it's not a physical release yet.) album of unreleased material that came out this year.

@JaymoeSays bro id jam this on my brand new pearl kit ALL DAY!!im in need of serious people to jam with,Email me at drunkpunkjonny@hotmail.com ill get back to ya quick fast,im in leeds and grenville area, ontario???
This song is a trance, hypnotic, descending... pulling you up to the heights just to let you fall down. Like the middle part riff.... Bittersweet, giving you a gentle guitar lick just to pull into a verse full of lyrical and musical darkness. Great drumming lesson by the way, Hats off Soundgarden.
When I was a wee lass and I was listening to this on my cassette player, this was the only song on the album I didn't like. Now that I'm older and pay attention to the lyrics and recognize the sheer genius of it all, it's one of my top 3 album favorites (next to Fresh Tendrils and 4th of July)

@lavits59 entitled sure, doesn't mean they're correct or hold the opinion for valid reasons. They probably listen to Linkin park and think that's good. "Wut? This haz no rap in it.. dislike"
@ruin3r 1st of all, linkin park is very good(i wasnt one of the two who disliked this), and 2nd of all, they were probably just joking around or trying to be different
Not that I disagree but what makes your opinion any more valid than theirs? And why do you give a fuck what somebody else likes or dislikes anyway? You can't change people just be glad you found something you enjoy. Shit 500 years ago we'd all have to listen to Latin Gospel music because of intolerant assholes like yourself thought their point of view was the only one that was correct.
Soungarden is and was around before Nirvana even got a record deal! So these fine gentleman are the precursor's to the whole grunge transition...and even if it was not their intention, Nirvana became what Cobain despised, which is why in my opinion, their sound didn't evolve, Cobain sold his soul and tried to get it back and it ended him... either embrace yourself or burnout and die!
This is a classic album. Surprised A&M records has not re-issued the vinyl record. I would love to get my hands on it for an affordable price. As far as mastering of this record goes. The instruments and vocals all come through very clearly. At this point it sounds good the way it is.I do not know why people compare Alice in Chains,Nirvana,Pearl Jam, STP and the other great 90's rock bands. They all sound different from one another.Just enjoy the music they have created for us.
@dalair This might be my favorite too.. Something just hits me on a deeper level than almost all of their other songs. Superunknown is just a pure classic in any sense in general though.
I remember getting this and Megadeth's Youthanasia on the same day back in 94. Two great albums in one day. I was real pleased with myself that weekend!
MY comment : this song exemplifies an exceptionally creative band, who ALSO can write excellent songs and play there asses off. to the NIN thing...NIN fans dont comment on Soundgarden because they dont listen to music involving organic human improvisation, or much music other than Nin. on Catergory : psychedelic yes SG is that and i enjoy putting them there, but i dont see it as depressive. it can awaken you in a depression in fact, but yeah, it aint always happy.
@12675 I'm a huge NIN fan and I love Soundgarden. I think that Superunknown is one of the best albums ever made. Who the fuck compares Nine Inch Nails to Soundgarden? They couldn't be more different. Grunge and Industrial Rock are polar fucking oppostie of eachother.

Do you know which is a better band? Soundgarden any day of the week. When I made this account I was at the peak of liking NIN, but even at my peak, I don't think I would have ever put Soundgarden above them. Soundgarden is pure classic plain and simple.
@schoolglue1234 actually grunge is hardcore punk fused with metal and indie rock.
like nirvana are more punk, soundgarden just straightforward rock(although they have some punk songs like kickstand,ty cobb, circle of power, etc)but they are heavy two from metal influences.and if u listen to nirvana, soundgarden, pearl jam, you'll see that they scream in and have really fast songs for some songs, that's from hardcore punk influence.and they also sing softly and gently form indie rock influence :)
Underappreciated Soundgarden song. I like the tonal and chord progressions. Like all good grunge, the pervading minor chords have a delightfully disturbing visceral effect on one's emotions.
@strust007 why does it matter if its better, to who is it better what does it matter ? people love being superior having superior opinions even with art.
GOD DAMN Soundgarden is so good it fucking HURTS! Goddamn towtruck driver stole this and Badmotorfinger from me along with alot of AIC and Tool albums when I crashed DUI back in '01. I forgot how amazing SG was.
@G30rg31415 All talent lost in fame and the complex bullshit we call art,(life) will be remembered by us and those who truly enjoy the contribution made to our own life and feelings. Too many to list. I really cant get into any band like I used to, every time I really start to fuckin dig em' shit happens. Life is short full of stuff don't know what for can't get enough.
@SuperInsanity1 Guy from NIN is a man child fucking music is for really angry white kids. Trent can suck my balls while I wear a Soundgarden jock strap.
@jasonbear72 that is so dumb. Trent does not fuck kids like in your twisted fanatsies. you actually thought that up, that is the fucked up part. I bet you are a loser, that is why you are on here putting down other people. kill yourself or grow up.
This song describes life perfectly. It's highs and lows, and how they follow each other and what you really have to do is enjoy the highs as much as you can because something might come and throw you down again. So bow down to live your life, live your life with humility.

Underappreciated Soundgarden song. I like the tonal and chord progressions. Like all good grunge, the pervading minor chords have a delightfully disturbing visceral effect on one's emotions.

Trent can suck my balls while I wear a Soundgarden jock strap.
jasonbear72 1 year ago
@jasonbear72 that is so dumb. Trent does not fuck kids like in your twisted fanatsies. you actually thought that up, that is the fucked up part. I bet you are a loser, that is why you are on here putting down other people. kill yourself or grow up.
