Durrant would not have had a chance had Gordon and Shughart been denied a 4th time. They held back the militia until a war-load arrived and said Adid wanted an American soldier alive. Shughart and Gordon are two of the greatest heroes ever. They knew what they were doing and had great tactincal presion. Shughart toughed it out though, Rhodes m14s are a pain in the ass to carry, I know from past experinces. I have a friend who is a SEAL and he helped defend a crashed Humvee in Iraq, all he had was an mp5 and a m9 with 5 mags. Of couse there was a smaller threat and more seals but still it's an honor to know that there are men like them in this world. God bless them and the USA

While i completely agree with your comment on Mr.Durant's book......if you have even barely glanced at his work, or Matt S's, or the heavily researched bowden story.....you'll know the movie captures "the spirit" of the battle of the black sea. Examples : "grimes" in the movie is based on a real ranger, who was also convicted of molesting his own step-daughter.....or the delta capt in the movie was bsed on real-life delta sgt paul howe....so yes the movie was good, but not fact!
Yeah for OPSEC reasons, many Delta characters in the movie are not the real anmes, besides those that were killed in the battle. There was a real Delta guy named Hoot, but Eric Bana's "Hoot" character is based on a mixture of Hoot, John "Mace" Macejunas, and third operator. Sanderson is based on Paul Howe as you said. In the movie, you never see Delta Sgt Bush die, but he did in real life. In the movie he was defending the first crash site as he survived the crash.
They were running out of ammo. According to Durant's book they asked if they had spare weapons in the bird. This scene is not entirely accurate but still a really great portrayal

Well, I can't really speak for Hollywood and the accuracy errors they may have made, although I will go watch that scene again to see if I can figure out what you mean. As for the weapon transfer, that may be more accurate than you think, as one weapon goes dry, it is sometimes quicker to reach for another than to find a magazine and reload.
It is Shughart he was using one of the crew cheifs m16's which were in the chopper, in reality the entire crew survived the crash but were eventually killed by the mob, if you want to hear the way it truely played out i would suggest reading Durant's book "In the Company of Heros" it is a great read
they outnumbered the Americans by thousands of men and they were also on a cocaine-like substance that allowed the a higher pain threshold than the average human.

The unarmed civillians wanted to kill them. They were in fact Aidid supporters, the guys with AKs were their kin, so of course they'd be mad at the USA for killing them. In fact, the civs most likely posed a greater threat to US personell than the militia bc the militia apparently knew the value of a live hostage while the civs were fighting motivated by anger and fear and were more focused on killing and maiming.

While i completely agree with your comment on Mr.Durant's book......if you have even barely glanced at his work, or Matt S's, or the heavily researched bowden story.....you'll know the movie captures "the spirit" of the battle of the black sea. Examples : "grimes" in the movie is based on a real ranger, who was also convicted of molesting his own step-daughter.....or the delta capt in the movie was bsed on real-life delta sgt paul howe....so yes the movie was good, but not fact!

Yeah for OPSEC reasons, many Delta characters in the movie are not the real anmes, besides those that were killed in the battle. There was a real Delta guy named Hoot, but Eric Bana's "Hoot" character is based on a mixture of Hoot, John "Mace" Macejunas, and third operator. Sanderson is based on Paul Howe as you said. In the movie, you never see Delta Sgt Bush die, but he did in real life. In the movie he was defending the first crash site as he survived the crash.

They were running out of ammo. According to Durant's book they asked if they had spare weapons in the bird. This scene is not entirely accurate but still a really great portrayal

There is ALWAYS a crew of 4 in a UH-60 Blackhawk. They don't EVER lift off without 4. Pilot, co-pilot, and port and starboard crew chiefs

but they pulled only the pilot out I assumed he was the only survivor. This mystery gunman disappears for the rest of the movie too. I'm assuming it was one of the snipers and as a continuity error they traded his m14 for an m16.

Well, I can't really speak for Hollywood and the accuracy errors they may have made, although I will go watch that scene again to see if I can figure out what you mean. As for the weapon transfer, that may be more accurate than you think, as one weapon goes dry, it is sometimes quicker to reach for another than to find a magazine and reload.

It is Shughart he was using one of the crew cheifs m16's which were in the chopper, in reality the entire crew survived the crash but were eventually killed by the mob, if you want to hear the way it truely played out i would suggest reading Durant's book "In the Company of Heros" it is a great read

These soldiers are so brave. They knew they would die. They saw that mob they knew what they were in for. Both of them died to save one man. There objective was met. Michael Durant lived to see his family again, but sadly they died.

The unarmed civillians wanted to kill them. They were in fact Aidid supporters, the guys with AKs were their kin, so of course they'd be mad at the USA for killing them. In fact, the civs most likely posed a greater threat to US personell than the militia bc the militia apparently knew the value of a live hostage while the civs were fighting motivated by anger and fear and were more focused on killing and maiming.

If I remember my reading correctly they kept shooting the bodies and then dragged their mutilated remains through the streets of Mogadishu. May be worse though.
As for the wreckage, its SOP to destroy that kind of stuff to prevent enemies from getting their hands on American intel and, more importantly, technology.
