Traviata - Ms. Netrebko displayed ample power, coloratura bravura with a marvelous tone Having recently heard Natalie Dessay sing Sempre Libera at the Met Gala, one was impressed by the legato nature of Netrebko's portray in contrast to Dessay's intentional staccato, fragmented phrasing interpretation. Having also seen photos of Fleming in her current Violetta at the ROH, one can only marvel at Netrebko's resilience, endurance and commitment to bel canto opera.

I think that was the tackiest death scene I have scene since Monty Python. Did I miss something earlier in this production where before her death running/dancing across the stage would be justified?
how about immensely moving? Emotional and lyrical? Speaks directly to the human heart maybe that's why Massenet is so popular. Even as an early music person, myself, I can totally appreciate French Romantic music. It's ok though, you obviously just don't understand it. That's what so much of the negativity on youtube is about surrounding opera and singing...pure ignorance.
exactly. pure ignorance. thank you for proving my point.
And what are you saying about Germans? You've obviously never acted on stage or had to express any human emotion in front of an audience. Pretentiousness in this art form is it's downfall. Thanks for contributing to that. She's only good for the Germans? Then explain her popularity world-wide and amoung distinguished musicians in any reputable orchestra/opera house or with any conductor worth their salt. She's got it where it counts
exactly!!! AGAIN! thank you. Her voice is NOT flawless. I never said it was! I guess she is human!?! No one's voice is perfect. Even the singer with the most "flawless" voice has flaws. I would take Anna's colour, acting ability and believability in a role over perfect technique any day. Singers with as-close-to-perfect technique as you can get are often boring to watch on stage or are completely un-suited to the role. But that might just be because I am a singer and can relate.
@thugman30 -- why are you insulting Germans? It's not just ignorant and bigoted, it is very, very unkind. So you don't like Netrebko. Allow others the privilege of liking whom they wish.
tuberculosis IS [WAS] consumpion because of the general effect the illnes had on the corporal constitution of the person -hardly was then an efficacious medical tretment
What we can do . because we are free is to have our likings. let's be honest. Vilazon l know is a nice fellow, but he started singing like a star too soon, his last recital in Lyceo was not good, But many seats were sold for his friends, he had to finish recital of Schumann and Faure, with a popuplar song of Cataluya. A bit shame!
... what kind of staging is this? it's odd... like she dies... but then she jumps up swirls around and hits the wall... wow, that's be interesting if we all died like that.
It reminds of Traviata, when Violetta has sudden surge of energy before she dies. I didn't like this much either. I liked both of them a lot. Netrebko has plenty of emotion and dynamic palette--"N'est-ce plus ma main" was like a seducctive French kiss. Alagna looked like Humbert Humbert but he sang well and acted like a lovestruck young man. Rolando gave it his own sensibility but his voice was starting to fray last spring. Let's hope he's in better shape come January.
Very moving performance, Alagna is wonderful as Des Grieux, I have enjoyed his recording of Manon, full of colour and emotion, impressive netrebko as Manon too, they made a great team.
yes, he 's great here, more than Netrebko who is very moving but her french is not very undestable!! Alagna is wonderfull here, very sensitive and a perfect french, like always!!
She is great, but ALagna's just horrible. He has no sensitivity and musicality. And about his voice you don't have to talk, although he isn't responsible for it. He's much too loud and hard. Terrible in this emotional scene!! But she's great as always
OUTRAGEOUS! See THIS is the kind of stuff I don't get. This man SOUNDS great, and he's singing his guts out. Who says you HAVE to sing this pianissimo? Ooops, just you? My bad. And she's not singing too softly.
I don't think of singing pianissimo, but HE just can reach the high notes by almost crying acidly and that's not singing at all! That's why I don't like him,he can't just sing an aria emotional with soft lines. And even if he manages some kind of it,it still sounds..strange.
Compare to Manon with Netrebko/Villazón:Although he was quite ill and his voice was far away from its top form at this recording,he sings it emotional(even if he cries sometimes,I confess, but remember top!).
I have seen Netrebko/Villazon sung that LA/Berlin production live last October. I try to like Villazon for some time, but his style just too juvenile, constantly moving, mugging with turbulent vocel line, muddy diction and over acting. I know some people like to promote these couple, just don't be too bias.
I have to confess that his voice and his acting are a bit overdone last time (that's why he has problems now), but still he can sing emotional and how the situation needs it (fast, slow, loud, his p are great!! or crescendos, he just can sing al these sings great!!) and Alagna's just not as good as him. That's a fact.
See! that's a fact to you, it's all about personal taste, that's why normaly I don't like praise one singer by put down another, but is you bashing Alagna frome begining without recognize any of his qualities, that is bias!
Perhaps I'm bias, but you know, I have seen the Manon with Alagna long before I've seen the one with Villazón (I've got them both on DVD) and even then I thought that Alagna sings too loud. That's nothing to do with Villazón. I just mentioned Villazón as a comparison. And these are facts that Alagna sings that way, everybody can hear this.
Well, I am biased, I know. But I really can't see anything at Alagna Rolando would need. Perhaps the ability to hold back a bit and be careful with his voice, but that's it. Rolando is times better than Alagna (I've just heard the latter yesterday with Anna in Romeo et Juliette and had to think the same thing again, and I haven't heard her with Rolando in this role yet.) In your opinion, what does Rolando need from Alagna??
Alagna is lucky he has a co-star really beautiful!
