I think it was a fantastic performance as a stand-alone piece. In the context of the show, I think Bernadette does a better job at conveying the meaning of it. Bernadette Peters IS Stephen Sondheim. She just resonates all the things his female leads are supposed to be.
both her and petters have different representations of the character..so in the own afflections they both did amazing..i think most people prefer petters because she had more connectability with the audience in her representation..more..idk.. craziness..and more desperation..lol....
enjoyable, and vocally impressive, but i still prefer Bernadette. her voice may have had different emotional imflections, but whatever she did, she was fierce. and thats what i love.
>> Bernadette's performance was, at best, perfunctory, while this is deeply emotional, filled with colors and possesses a powerful and focused arc.
You sound like a pretentious music critic. Ms. Dondy's performance is excellent, there's no need to trash Bernadette Peter's performance just to build her up. I prefer Peter's performance, for there are some nuances to some of her words that I prefer, but I'll certainly be revisiting this clip as well.
I saw Bernadette twice on Broadway as the witch, and, sorry, this woman's scintillating rendition is way, way better. Bernadette's performance was, at best, perfunctory, while this is deeply emotional, filled with colors and possesses a powerful and focused arc. It smolders, sizzles, then finallly bursts into flames at the end.
Ms. Dondy's performance was neither watered down nor did she skip a SINGLE word. She brought the house down, and Mr. Sondheim himself loved it! This was done as a stand-alone piece in a concert tribute, not in the context of "Into the Woods" and was one of the highlights of an historical and amazing evening!
her placement on her high notes is a little funny and she skips words because sondheim's wordy way of writing things in the 80's doesn't allow her to do that... it was ok, but i prefer vanessa williams and i like the version of the song where the witch is singing to the baby rather than everyone else. that has those amazing lyric changes...

Glorious! Some talent needs no makeup or costumes. Though I loved her earrings!

Eh, I still prefer Bernadette Peters. Although Dondy added a little Sweeney Todd feel to it - very Sondheim.
