Everyone looked so nice in their white, and what I miss about those times was people didnt get overly dressed up to extremes. People weren't out to make fashion statements. Before adopting spiritual music this was the man who formed the urban/chicago style of blues under the name "Georgia Tom"
Many of the most talented blues musicians took their music to the church eventually Rev. Gary Davis, Skip James, Ishman Bracey are most well known examples
Thank you Jesus....precious Lord....please take our hands and lead us home....yes Lord....Thank ya Jesus.....Thank ya..,, thank ya Jesus....Hallellujah to the King...thank you Jesus.
No one man has ever had such a greater impact on the contemperary black church worship than Brother Dorsey. Pastors, Preachers and Bishops, Denomination leaders great and small have made contributions to the American Black churchmovement.

@ivanberry19 I don't there was so much going on. When they filmed most of the scenes we were in Houston for the convention. They caught our choir getting off the bus and my little cousin song part of "working on a building."

@mikevannsr23 No, the is the National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses of which he was the founder. The Gospel Music Workshop of America was birthed out of this convention.
I remember that day. Oh how I remember that day. I was in the Youth Department with Supervisor Hayes and Bishop Rodney Posey. That was our consecration service. The power of God would shower down on us and prepare us for the rest of the week. I sung with my dad group The Greater Atlanta Choral Chapter. We had a glorious time in the Lord. I miss the convention. Carry on my children.
My mother Lovessss Thomas Dorsey. The life and music of the Father of Music. The world needs to keep it going and spread the word of God like Professor Thomas has shown all of us. Thank You Professor Thomas. My mother is inspired by you and Mahalia Jackson. All Fans of good old fashion music type in Mahalia Jackson By Marie Guillian. U will be blessed. Mrs. Marie Guillian wants to keep music like Mr thomas alive.
OMG...this made me holla with tears of joy, but through my suffering...it gave me hope!! This is truly what GOSPEL music is all about...the originator and author (Thomas A. Dorsey)...Vickie Winans saw this man vision, and sung this song...God Bless You for this upload ;-)!!
@witness512005 Thank God for Thomas Dorseyt and many more like him to spread the word through music. Type in Mahalia Jackson by Marie Guillian u will be blessed. My mother is another person who would like to keep music like this alive.
I always get tore up starting at about 2:57..such sincerity! I don't even know who she is, but her tears testify to the power of the living God, and his name is Jesus!
I beleve this was either 1980 or 1981, we were taping for the movie "Say Amen Somebody". I was in the choir ,my mother and I. Those were the days and now my kids love the convention as well.
I take it that this was at the National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses. Do you know which one was this, what Annual Session and where? I just attended the 76th one in Las Vegas, NV and my oh what I time we had there praising the Lord!
We went to cleveland ohio in i believe 1973 with the Florence Braudus chior from philly and the little people community chior. I was 8 yrs old. I have to admit again this vid brought tears to my eyes. Lord I love you Lord i thank you for keeping me Lord thank you. This vid just reminds me of my grandmother (RIP). I wish church did devotion like this. RIP Dr. Dorsey
This video is truly inspiring. I'm so happy I got a chance to see and witness this time in Gospel History by the late great Thomas A. Dorsey. Rest in peace my brother.
Thanks for posting this powerful video...I will share it with the youth in my church so they will have some background on the origins of the song....Some of our young people need to know the history of this precious song.
please check the two videos above: first is a short transformation/history of thomas a dorsey from blues singer georgia tom into the gospel genius we love and respect; second video is a wonderful adaptation of precious lord by hank williams ...
great to see T.A. Dorsey doing Precious Lord. This night after my mother in laws passing, i just needed to hear Precious Lord and found this vid. my church sings this often and i fell on its words tonight. thanks for sharing...
Yet another one of my heroes. My peers don't understand it and I couldn't care less. The man's music touched countless people, and continues to do so to this day. Have any of you ever read up on the history of this song? When he wrote it? I cannot hear it without tears coming to my eyes...with all the man went through, he continued to write songs that glorified the creator and savior, and didnt lose sight of what's waiting on the other side.
Thomas Dorsey WAS a Blues musician. He used to play for Ma Rainey the Empress of the Blues. Spiritual Lyrics, this we dont deny, the the musical structure of his music whether you like it or not, is Blues music. Modern Gospel is more like contemporary. This fact and truth should not offend you. why not? Because its the truth, smile, because you just learned something you didnt know. And what makes music spiritual is not the music, but the lyrics.
the truth is that Blues came from Christian Church music. Read WC Handy bio. He learned his blues moves from growing up in his father's church. Don't you know the devil can't create? All he can do is take something God and God's people have created and pervert it. All the pioneer of blues and jazz, learned their music in church. You love Mahalia so much (as do I)...don't you know her great quote was 'it was the devil that stole the beat from God'. The truth shall set you free!
actually he started out as a bluse singer he made several recordings as a bluse singer then he got saved but loved music somuch that he started righting gospel songs. at that time the church only sang spirituals. he is called by many the father of gospel music
he was a blues singer back in the 1920s and early 30s. After he got saved he started singing spiritual songs. After his 1st wife and child died in '33 he wrote this song and started singing gospel
Professor Dorsey was a blues musician before becoming a believer. As a result, his Gospel compositions reflect a certain blues element. He is considered the father of Gospel Music. He is one of the first to combine secular musicial elements with religious forms of music that were familiar to Blacks (hymns, spirituals, jubilees, long metered songs, etc.) This new music was called Gospel Music. He also wrote "Jesus Is The Light Of THe World", which has more of a jazz influence.
After seeing this, I have a renewed respect for song writers who write or have written songs from their hardships and life experiences. Praise the LORD! Amen?
Yeah that is correct...but his wife died during the birth of their son and the son then died two days later after the mothers passing and this song was birth out of him while in a church service not long after their passing when a preacher made the statement "Precious Lord" while he was up speaking.
Do you have the clip of him right before this point in the movie when he was walking in and the choir was singing "Yes Jesus Loves Me?" That was a truly anointed part in the movie. I get teary eyed every time in that part of the film!!!
Agnostic...Love Jesus The reason 4 the Gospel music..His Spirit and word is in the music...Believe in the Lord Jesus christ and thou shalt be saved...Jesus is Lord
"And the testimony is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life."
The music is here for you to enjoy, Jeepster. Just take it in. This stuff is like fine wine. (On another note...to me, a song as deep as this proves the existance of God! Man, it doesn't get any better than this. Precious Lord is the essence of the blues.)
Bless God! This will bless the world in more ways than one. Thank you for posting this in the air waves. I believe God Himself will be well pleased with such acts of witnessing of God's Grace and bountiful Love. Be Blessed, whoever see's this in Jesus Name, forever. Amen.
BRAVO!!!!! Truly a gospel great. His music will live on through the generations. For the young and young at heart this song is an inspiration. "Anointed."
offjonchain i think this was recorded in 1980 or `81. I'm not for sure but this is historic & legendary to have the Honorable Thomas Dorsey still alive & singing.
You see, when Professor Dorsey says "Watch it", he is meaning to "play the third"; step aside and let the Spirit in. The best gospel singers are those who know when NOT to sing a note or hit a key, to leave space in the song for the Spirit to have presence.
Everyone looked so nice in their white, and what I miss about those times was people didnt get overly dressed up to extremes. People weren't out to make fashion statements. No one as better than the other, and you couldnt really tell who had more than the other person. Its amazing how much has changed.

Thanks I was wondering how old this video was. I can't remember those types of cameras that they were using to take pictures.

offjonchain i think this was recorded in 1980 or `81.
