it is quite sad. night-active bugs orient themselves during the night by flying always in the same angle to the brightes light on the sky...

if this brightes light is the moon, everything is great, because it is so far away that they fly straightforward if they keep the angle to it, but if the brightes light is a lamp, and they keep the same angle to it, they fly a circle and end up ...

Those aren't fireflies. They're moths and gnats and all those other annoying little bugs that get in your eyes and your ears and bite you and infest you. They're lit up by the street light they are circling.

Y'know, the reason they all make different shapes is because each species of firefly has a different way of flying and a different way of showing it's light, and this is how fireflies know who to mate with, the one with the corresponding dance
