I wouldn't say Schreier is only sometimes greater than Dieskau or Wunderlich as commented below but invariably What amazing consistency control technique and performing skill throughout the years He was my favourite singer as a student all these years ago and remains so His unaffected musicianship and natural unstrained vocal quality is timeless in my view
You're right - this is a *very* difficult song to put across effectively. And you're right, perhaps not every artist can do so. It may be a special talent only for some ;)
A very special performance of this ethereal song - hearing it, an exquisite and profound experience. I imagine much as Schumann would have wanted to hear it. Thank you so much for posting!
schumann was a genius.. it's my opinion, but it may be a fact

Go listen to Nick Zammeti, a young American counter tenor! Incredible easy musicality, no strain, only a little messy diction~

It was as if the sky
Had quietly kissed the earth,
So that in a shower of blossoms
She must only dream of him.
ain't this magic magic magic?

Sometimes Schreier is even greater than, say, Fischer-Dieskau or Wunderlich...

very inspiring rendition. I will try to cultivate this kind of tenderness with this song.

great performance, superb musicality!
makes it sound so easy, although it's one of the hardest vocal pieces ever!!

My favourite 'old' versions are those by Karl Erb and Richard Tauber, both of which I bought as 78s as a boy!

Hast du mal die Version von Werner Güra gehört? Ich hab versucht, sie als Video-Antwort zu laden, weiss aber nicht ob's klappt...

Yeah, no fuzz, just the Lied ... He lets the music and text unfold, a singer should not do more than that *cough* Fischer-Dieskau *cough*
I also Like Norman Shetler, the pianist very much in this and in gerneral!
