Have you thought of a carbon fiber driveshaft for it? PST makes carbon fiber driveshafts. They're out of Florida. They should have some of the best prices around for a quality driveshaft. They quoted me ~$500 for my '94 Mustang.
Well you're very close it was "The poor man's 'vette" But I could have had a 'vette for what it cost me to make mine like this :) and yes it is a German car. Opel still mfrs cars over there. As a matter of fact, before they stopped making them a Saturn Sky over here was a new Opel GT over there. Just badged differently.
very nice, i picked up on the "missing" sound and thought you had the req_fuel way up, but that was untill i read that you did your cams- sounds very healthy- do you have a hp figure yet?
The distributor is installed because the oil pump drive gear is on the bottom of the shaft, I have since cut the top of the distributor off so it no longer looks weird. The car, as stated in the title is running off of a Ford EDIS4 ignition system. There are spark plug wires installed, they are just not connected to the distributor, they are connected to the EDIS4 Coils. The engine has a trigger wheel mounted to the damper pulley and the timing comes from it.
I have got a very good hint for you to keeping the nice old Engine in good shape with todays ultra dry eco fuels: Use 1:100 API TC two stroke oil / fuel mix as regular driving fuel, that keeps the old fuel-system gaskets, rubber parts, alloy parts etc... and cast iron metal surfaces of those vintage engines in excellent shape...and it also lubricates the valves and upper piston regions. Most Porsche vintage owners in Germany do so :) Also keeps carbs + injection and tank clean and rustfree
The wheels are from the 70's just like the car, they are painted black with gold flake in them that matches the gold color of the car. The back of the car is the same paint also, it really on shows up when the sun hits it, pictures don't do it justice.
@8sixfeetunder ok...tahanks... this is the fist car that im restoring... but i know how to... i am restoring a 1968 ford f100 for my self... but finding parts for that opal is hard being i live in the middle of nowhere in tenneessee
That is just a sweet piece of work. Back 1970-71 I was in my freshman year at Lock Haven State in Pa. The dorm daddy had a metallic green one and let me drive it. It was just fantastic to me then. I myself had a 68 Opel Kadet, the one that looked kind of like a baby Mustang. Great fun factor, cheap to run.
So from what I can tell this video was posted Aug 7, 2008. Have you gotten the car on the road yet? If you got the interior in how does it look? Back in the 1980's I used to work for a place in HE Ohio called Mantapart and I used to work on these cars all the time when I worked there. I have not seen any on the road for many years.
The car has been on the road since March of 2009, its first long trip was to Carlisle, PA for the 2009 Import and Kit Car Show. The interior was custom made by me and can be seen in a thread entitled "off to the sandblaster" on Opelgt.com. I have had the car tuned on a dyno at WOT and have tuned it in all other running ranges by myself, I think it runs very well. The dyno run yielded 122HP at the wheels @ 6800 RPM, redline is 7000RPM
It did have plug wires, they are connected from the EDIS4 coils to the plugs. The timing signal comes from a trigger wheel that is bolted to the crank pulley and it sends its signal to the EDIS4 module which then sends a signal to MegaSquirt.
@markandsonmetal Oh I see them now there external on the fender I seen the cap and was thinking what the heck just using it for pump shaft sure nice little car my brother loved these I was a Bricklin or Pantera man really I love ford .Thanks nice car
@markandsonmetal I knew that 2.4 pistons are a little bit larger then the 2.2/2.0 ones (which have the same diameter as the 2.0 pistons, 93mm, the only difference between 2.0 and 2.2 engines being the stroke on the crankshaft).
hey nice work beautiful car. im doin the same to an 1986 E30. the hole time your talking about starting the car up and there are no wires attached to the distributer it looks...
hello, were can i find a megasquirt to install on a 1984 chevrolet chevette latin america type, right now is carb' sistem but use a DI electronic sistem. Im pretty good with fuel injection sistem but i looked at other type of cars but i dont' know the stroke of my engine for proper timing please would you let me know.
Man are you sharp...I never realized it was in there and you can only pick up the rear quarter panel at that. It's a '64 Hardtop that was the 1st car I rebuilt from the ground up, totally stock with a 1200cc 40HP engine.
It was the first time the engine ever ran, it was running very rich. I tuned it on a dyno at a later date at which time it developed 122rwhp @ 6800RPM.
Very nice, these engines are really lively with high compression. I`ve owned several Opel Kadetts with the same engine and they`ve all been lots of fun. Good luck with the car, and have fun :)
The distributor shaft also runs the oil pump so it needed to be in place to run the car. I now have a shortened shaft with now dizzy on top so it looks better. The ignition timing is coming from a trigger wheel that was mounted to the crankshaft pulley, which is part of the EDIS system.
my older brother had one of these, their small inside, you dont sit in it you wear it, i've gotten rides home from school in the area behind the front seats and his girl sat in the other seat, bastard hit every pothole on the way home too!
fun car looks like a mini vette, stock, it did a 10 sec 0-60

There is another short video of the car on a chassis dyno, it produced 122 WHP @ 6800 RPM which translates to about 170 HP @ the flywheel.

@markandsonmetal after all these modifications, you only got 122hp? Ever thought about supercharging it?

@paky66
Keep in mind that the 122 HP is at the WHEELS which is about 170HP at the flywheel.

That Opel GT is nothing but gorgeous, full respect to you.
Just wondering why you went for the 2.2 and not the 2.4, or the DOHC 20XE redtop?
Not giving you crap, just unique to see the 2.2 used as a transplant instead of the two motors i've mentioned.
