Also, consider the in-ear headphones with membranes that have a diameter of ~5mm, yety are still able to produce sound at frequencies around 20Hz...

Anyhow, I do not know too much about speakers - am only 16yrs old.

I do not claim to be an expert of speakers, I'm just showing a way to make a working one.

Besides, size doesn't matter! It's how you use it!

@grrumpff It's all in the number of winds you put into the coil, strength of magnets, and cone size. If you have the correct ratio, you will find yourself with a good speaker no matter how small. There are calculators for this purpose on the internet.

i accedentally popped my laptop speakers by updating from SP1 to SP2 then i Acedentally plugged in the headphones into the wrong jack then the headphones gave me a bad elctric shock and it was very very sore and now my laptop speakers give a headache and i think my sound card burned out and no left audio from speaker but distorted sound on right hand speaker. LOL!!!!

i used to make my own speaker drivers,often the voice coil would be Radioshack magnet wire superglued to a Former made of a Strip of parer rolled up..the spider was the plastic Top to a Styrofoam cup,the cone was made of Craft Paper,the surround was toliet paper,considering the crude design it sounded pretty nice,efficency was low but it was a good outcome.
