I would be very interested to see some of the excripts which describe the battle. I imagined that Leonidas and Xerxes never met, I mean.. Xerxes would NEVER be alone with so few servants there for just one example, I believe. In reality there were 4000 other troops too, I believe. But still.. Leonidas sent the other armies home that fought alongside him and his Spartans so that they could achieve more glory in their deaths.
Leonidas and his Spartans could have made a retreat, but they wanted to stay and die.
The part where the guy says "Fight in the shade" happened. He said that so he could achieve more glory.
There were two or three Spartans who survived the battle. One was sent home to tell the story the others left because of battle injuries.
The traitor was not a Spartan.

Few things.
There were many armies fighting alongside Leonidas and his Spartans. To stave off battle fatigue, they would swap out in strings, or shifts.
Leonidas and Xerxes never met. They only time Xerxes found out that Leonidas was king was after he died.
The spartans and remaining soldiers died in sword to sword combat as their spears broke from previous fighting.
The reason the main Spartan army remained home was because of the Carnia(?) celebration, not politics.
