  • shit quality!

  • The long handheld shot was a very interesting choice. I haven't seen it done in a chambara before.

  • The Zatoichi movies of the 60's look suprisingly modern, unlike alot of 70's Chinese kung fu films, which seem dated by comparison. Even the style of cinematography in this clip seems like something that was filmed recently, but maybe that's just the way I see it.

  • A big portion of this is, I think, the nature of the studio sets used. They're much more believable in the Zatoichi movies. The Japanese films also, in general, had more time put into them. And they also had extremely good cinematographers and more visually modern directors.

For an example of something that looks more modern and is Chinese, look to the 1967 film The One-Armed Swordsman.

  • If Jack Bauer were a Japanese He would have been Zatoichi..

  • Every movies of Zatoichi(26 films and 100 tv epsodes) are awesome.

  • Wow! I never realised there was 26 films.. Only another 20 to go for me. Fantastic films. Thanks.

  • I have all the movies on DVD, I'll get to it when I have more than a few minutes to spare as I do right now.

  • I have a request lartrak, think you can get the full video clip and scene of Zatoichi Vs The One armed Swordsman? That had to be his best fight ever.

  • aizensoku has tat fight video, gibbs.

  • The blind swordsman doling out some swift justice.

  • Not too many of the Zatoichi flicks have gore. It isn't really needed, and wouldn't work well with the style of choreography that they usually have.

However, the final film in the series has a ton of gore and blood sprays. Some of the other entries also have gore - severed arms, eye gougings, blood geysers (first blood spray is in Zatoichi and the Chest of Gold), etc.

If gore is what you want, however, I'd suggest the films of Katsu's brother - the Lone Wolf and Cub series.

  • uhh...no gore

  • Shintaro Katsu can kick Beat Takeshi's butt anyday. This clip is proof!

  • You are right, Takeshi Kitano bull shit!

  • I don't agree

  • Whirlwind of death!
