Just to echo the words of many. Our son had this surgery 2 months ago at 6 months old. He's a different baby - loads more energy and vitality now. Modern medicine is amazing and we're eternally grateful to the surgeon and hospital.
what is or determines the difference between the open heart surgery or the cathater surgery? my 19month old needs this surgery, but i fear that the open heart will cause mental distress and change in personality due to her age.
I had a VSD repair when I was approx. 6 months old I am now in my late 20's and I am completely healthy. This surgery is amazing and I am grateful to the surgeon who fixed my heart.
I just came across this video. I had a VSD and Double Outlet Right Ventricle repaired in 1989 (I was about 3-4 months old.) After playing sports my whole life and running cross country and track and playing basketball 4 years in high school (I still run ~20 miles a week), I am about to graduate college. Not bragging at all, but just praising the medical community and lending a peace-of-mind to any parents whose children will undergo this procedure. Modern medicine is really a wonder.
Jamie had his Op on Friday, The surgeon said it went smoothly even though they found an anomaly in his chest which lengthened the op somewhat. He spent 24 hours in Post-Op care, and now he is in Intensive care, he is off oxygen, has had the chest drains removed and may even be sent to the normal ward tonight. Kids what amazing little fighters they are :-D
I got this surgery done at 8 days old, then I got a Correction of the Aorta Repaired when I was 3 years old. All because of a whole in my heart. But I'm proud of my scars, and we explain to my younger cousins and my niece that I have a "zipper and pocket" (names we gave the scars). I'm now 19 and very active. :) I've very happy for this surgery and only have to see my heart doctor every 2 years. It's great.
My 3 month old son is having this operation tomorrow morning, he has a VSD, an ASD and Pulmonary Hypertension (probably caused by the VSD)... despite having seen this film numerous times I am in absolute bits with terror for my little boy :-(
Dear madame /sir (craz3ykiller) my 4 month old baby survived this he had 2 heart (vsd) surgeries in 4 days , ofcourse you'll survive this may god be with you and have courage
@rocky2421 I dont know but im pretty sure its a diesase. when i was born my vsd was the size of a Quarter my but i never had to have surgery yet and im going to be 13
@craz3ykiller Dear madame /sir (craz3ykiller) my 4 month old baby survived this he had 2 heart (vsd) surgeries in 4 days , ofcourse you'll survive this may god be with you and have courage
@craz3ykiller I should add that mine was done using an Amplatzer Muscular VSD Occluder (see /watch?v=8gS5zQVkG4Y&feature=related) so no open heart surgery was required. They went in through my vieins and arteries into my heart and did everything remotely, only leaving two tiny (now invisible) scars in my groin.
@butrflybel888 No problem. To this day shes doing great. Her scar has healed very well and is barely noticeable. the only bad scar is her Body tube one, but thats the nature of the body tube. but shes now 16 months, and 1 year since surgery, and is doing great.
Just wanted to say I really enjoyed watching this surgery. I am a medical student though I did not rotate through CT surgery for my surgery rotation and I just wanted to say that this is a gorgeous surgery. It is truly amazing how VSDs can be repaired and the way heart surgery is performed.
My daughter had this surgery when she was 4 months old. Her VSD was 7mm and she was " struggling to strive" Dr Leonard Bailey at Loma Linda did an absolutely great job getting her patched up. Today (9 months later) there are no signs of heart disease. her heart is normal with no murmur or abnormalities. watching this video back before the surgery really helped me to understand what was going to happen.
I think God direct me to your site. I have a 3 year old daughter turning 4 this March. She was diagnosed to have VSD a week after I delivered her. Since then, her Doctor advised to have her an open heart surgery to correct the defect. As a single mom, I was so confused, broke and afraid what might happen to my child because she was so young to have such surgery. From then on, she is taking Spironolactone and Digoxin for her maintenance and a monthly visit to her Doctor.
Just this January 2010 after her 2Decho, the Doctor told us to really have the surgery the soonest possible before the valve gets damaged, ofcourse I want to for my daughter to get cured, but how can an ordinary single mom afford such surgery? That is why I am here searching online to find somebody, an organization or a foundation who could help for my daughter's surgery. Hope you can help me with this problem Doc or any referral? Please help me save my daughter's life.
My son had surgery last Thursday, and was out of the hospital on Sunday. Everything went great. Thank You Dr. Earle Austin and Dr. fred Arensman in Louisville, KY.
My son has a large VSD. They are looking at operating within the next 6 weeks, which means he will not be much older than 3 months. He is now 7 weeks old and weighs just over 5 kg, showing steady growth since his birth.
Isn't this a little early to perform this procedure? I read that risks are lowest after 6 months old...
dr. burke is awesome he has operated on my son 3 times once at 3 days old at 4.5 lbs then at 1 1/2 y.o. and just recently at 8 years old thanx to dr. burke my son is healthy he still needs more work becuase of the seriouness of his condition but thanx a million to dr. burke and his excellent team of dr. and surgeons as well as the cardiac nurses
Gosh, this is astonishing for me... =)) I had inborn heart disease too, 3-in-1 - VSD, mitral valve deficiency and stenosis of pulmonary artery. I had surgery when I was 5 y.o., I spent more than 5 hours in OR, and about a month in hospital. Now 20 years have passed, and it seems to be ok. =))
Thanks for posting videos here, Dr. Burke! =)) Good job =))
My 4 year old daughter is having ASD closure on 9/10/09. Seeing this is both very scary and great all at the same time (thank you!). Any past parents have words of wisdom to share? How long until she will be feeling "normal"
My son had this done at 9 months as well, but w/ a gortex patch. I can not believe my baby had that done, to see it is amazing!! He is happy and healthy 3 1/2 years later!!
I prefer pericardium for VSD repair for three reasons. 1. The patch will be very close to the aortic valve, and native pericardium is less likely to damage the valve than a sythetic (Goretex) patch. 2. Pericardium handles well surgically and conforms to irregular edges and chords around the margin of the VSD. 3. Pericardium is free, Goretex is expensive.
We use pericardium, because this is the baby's own tissue, and is less likely to get infected, or to damage nearby structures like the aortic valve. We believe that pericardium is the optimal patch material for babies with VSD.
My daughter had this surgery done when she was six months old. Eight hours in the OR and ten days in the PICU with no complications. She is now a healthy, happy five year old who takes dance and Taekwon-do.
Amazing, this is absolutely fascinating. I sure wish you guys could fix my heart.

@craz3ykiller I had two VSD closures in 2003-2004, in the UK at age 23-24. Nothing to worry about, all is good, I was back at work in 7 days.

Thank you Dr. Burke. My son is having surgery this Thursday in Louisville, by Dr. Earle Austin.
He is 14 months old and weighs 25 lbs. He is in great health. They are going to close his VSD and PDA, and open up his LPA a little.
I ran into a cardiac surgeon in Louisville that knows you with the first name of Paul, who works with Dr. Dowling.
This is awesome!
