BEAUTIFUL PIPE. I just turned 18 so i can finally enjoy smoking. I always hated cigarettes so i want to start smoking pipe tobacco because i always enjoyed the smell when my grandfather would smoke it.
That's what flakes and plugs do: burn slowly. Which is a good thing in the case of yellow Virginia 'cause if it were to burn fast, it would fry your tongue. They also concentrate the flavour: even as light a flake as Baren's Virginia has a rather intense, sweet taste. In the old days there were few flakes in the American market. I can recall smoking Sobranie flake in my youth, which I loved. Watch out for Burley flakes, they can be real heady.
im also just getting into flakes and have a tin of petersons university flake, erinmore flake and a mac barens navy flake.....i have only opened the navy flake and wow weee shes a cool smoke......simply amazing....
Hey, nice vid! I enjoy smoking flakes a lot. In one of my recent vids, I show 2 flakes that I enjoy smoking. You do have to play with the flakes a bit, in some pipes the fold and stuff works better, in other pipes rubbing it up a bit does the trick for a nice smoke. Cya
Hi Pipepops :) I always smoke flakes if the tobacco is available in flake ( or plug ) form. Flakes not only burn slower, but give a cooler and a stronger smoke. I like the old University Flake. Got a nice Vitmain N hit and it burns slow. Lovely nutty burley taste and, unlike lots of the American aros, although UF is flavored, the tobacco always takes centre stage. Enjoy matey.
@TamperPeterson Hi Tamper, I tried the university flake last night. It is as you say and I got a bit of a nicotine buz from it. I used the "dub in the damn" fold and stuff method. I think I need to rub out the UF more than I did for that first bowl. Does rubbing it out make it smoke stronger or lighter? Thanks.
UF smokes fine rubbed out matey. My father-in-law smokes nothing but UF and he fully rubs out the flakes. I'll be doing a video real soon about how I deal with flakes. I tend not to usually rub them out fully. Depends on the flake and the tobacco moisture though.
@TamperPeterson I'll be looking forward to your video on how you deal with flakes. The fold and stuff method worked well for the virginia flake. The UF seemed to be better with a little more roughing up.
Havent had the Virg Flake, but I have tried the Uni Flake. It was the first tin I purchased. The uni flake is interesting..also. Takes some getting used to. Tamper is the man!! Take care pops!
ah, University Flake is one of my favourites. Not as sweet as your usual full virginia flakes, but quite rich in taste (like most flakes), with a veeery subtle plum scent and a very nice sweet aftertaste. I hope that you will enjoy it!
That pipe is astonishing. Indeed the color is already starting to show, I'll be interested if you could show us how it's progressing from time to time. Wonderful piece of craftsmanship.
Well, that's the purpose of Flake tobaccos in a way: burn slower, providing a prolonged smoke experience without having to fill the pipe twice. I'm glad you tried this flake which, at least, may have convinced you regarding that sweetness that some VAs appear to have. Did you enjoy the tin aroma as well?
@DailyPuffer I did indeed find the tin aroma pleasing. I may grow to like it more in time. I find I am begining to enjoy a bit more variety in my tobaccos. I guess we're never too old to learn.

Do you notice when you smoke a meerschaum that the smoke is cooler? I never tried a meer.
PAPIPEGUY 11 months ago
@PAPIPEGUY I'm not sure I would say it smokes cooler, but the tobacco always has a slightly different flavor than in a briar.
oldpipepops 11 months ago
@OldNorthernSmoky I would have to guess, but I'd say about thirty to forty bowls.

@Ichbinmuede The first thing I noticed was how slowly it burned compared to my other tobaccos.

@nannoc2008 Yes, but I can't figure out how to get it to post in the reply box. The link to it is on his last Tamper Peterson video.
