I think the "oww" is supposed to be someone trapping their fingers in a movie clapperboard, a joke about as old as talkies themselves!

@davepukem Actually it's an old Jonathan King song called I'll Slap Your Face which they used as the theme for the show. It's someone's face getting slapped and then they say "ow" and I think that's Jonathan saying the "ow" if my memory is correct.
