One of my favourite poems by Brooke. Brilliant and clever. A rare occasion when Brooke gives up his "always unhappy and doomed lover" pose. I strongly recommend "The great lover" by Jill Dawson. I can't help thinking of Brooke exactly the character he has been created by Dawson:-). Irresistible:-)
@p111f I must tell you the remark I made on my reading of The Great Lover, "There's a quasi-biography about Rupert Brooke called "The Great Lover", prurient and harmful to his reputation. Don't fail to avoid it."
@SpokenVerse I can't really judge whether Dawson's novel( a piece of fiction as a matter of fact but based on Brooke's letters, diaries and works) has done some some damage to Brooke's reputation. I simply enjoyed reading it and thinking of Brooke just the way he has been created by Jill Dawson. That's all. In my view, Jill Dawson herself being a great admirer of Brooke's poetry didn't mean to hurt the object of her research:-)
One of my favourite poems by Brooke. Brilliant and clever. Rare occasion when he dropped his "always unhappy lover" pose. Recently I've read "The great lover" by Jill Dawson. I like to imagine that Rupert Brooke was really a character she has created, at least in some respect:-). Greetings from Poland:-)
Funnily enough I learnt this poem as a Scripture (R E) assignment in 1966. My end of term report was overall absolutely rubbish and I came bottom in everything except Scripture where I was placed 1st with the comment "Excellent" against it. I reckon I must have enjoyed it then as much as listening to it again after all these years just now, - Great post, thanks very much

I'm sorry but I laughed! It seems ridiculously absurd from this perspective. And yet, it's life.
Great read.

Thank you. To snipe at religious belief was quite bold for his time: I'm sure Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens would be amused.
