i know how it is, I also take all copper pennies i can out of circulation via my till at work and i now have 81 lbs. and around my city (of about 60,000 people) its getting slightly harder to find then than just 4 months ago when i started. Although i take the copper pennies out in lager quantities i do also get nickels but not much i only have about $7 in them, but yes as dishesdealer417 said they will be a basis of trade when the economies collapse. people need to see this and get ready for it
Nickel is valuable. During World War II the U.S. government valued nickel more than silver and so replaced 35% of nickel in a five cent piece with silver (known as silver war nickels). Silver is very valuable (more so than gold) for smart bombs which each require 15 kilos of silver for their electronics. Don't be too proud to collect pre 1982 pennies and all nickels. they will be valuable after hyperinflation or other currency collapse destroys the fake green currency.
One cubic meter of solid nickel = 8800 kilograms. Spot price of nickel in 2007 was $23/pound. One cubic meter of solid nickel = $400,000+ US historically.
Silver before 1973 was not more than $2 per ounce ($29/pound)
Thing to remember is: The US produces almost zero nickel. Canada produces 30% of the worlds supply. The US produces zero Neodymium, China produces 97%, China stopped selling Neodymium, within six months the price Quadrupled.

And to add, silver was under $3 an ounce in 1993.
What I wouldn't give to get a cubic meter of silver at spot back in 93.
