Actually, the Biblical reference for this can be found throughout the Hebrew canon, what Christians call the Old Testament. If you read Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, Kings (books 1 and 2), Samuel (Books 1 and 2) you will see a lot of Biblical examples of this.
