  • was it just me, or was that rate of fire inconsistent?

  • My first AR build is with an Adams Arms piston kit, and when I'm shooting at the range for accurate groupings, (breathing between shots), I am able to inhale Oxeygen right after each shot instead of taking a breath and taking in a bunch of carbon into my lungs. The piston kit is definitely nice to have. I do remember trying to control my breathing with a D.I. and having a bit of a hard time inhaling right after each shot with all the gasses in my face. cleaning a hand guard isn't that hard.

  • I'll take a dirty front sight and rail if it means a cooler and cleaner running rifle. Like your gonna get so much carbon on your sights you can't use them???

  • you want have the carbon in the BC, you'll just have it all in the FSB and hand guards...

  • That is correct. By venting into the handguards you are keeping the BC (bolt carrier group) and chamber area cleaner and cooler for mre reliabel function.

  • @TalonArms I'd rather clean my BCG than handguards and sights. The majority of shooters will never experience the need for a piston gun. The piston also adds extra weight to the front of the rifle.

And on the m4carbine site a member did test measuring temperatures on both types of guns and found very small differences at the bolt...

  • @slugga06

Piston guns are not for everyone, that is true. But you should try to shoot with one before you dismiss them. Like you, I run my standard 16" with direct gas, but my suppressed short barrels and 16" guns are piston for a reason.

I can't comment on that guys test as I have not seen it, but you shoot a few mags suppressed with a piston vs. a wet direct gas gun and you will be sold.

Also, the front sight and handguard don't get as dirty as you think.

  • @TalonArms You are right, I shouldn't dismiss them without giving them a try. But I think i'll wait until companies finally settle down on a solid design. They all seem to have their own and still tweaking them.

  • People who like the DI system always argue how small the difference(s) with the Gas Piston system. I don't have a problem with DI or Gas Piston. But I do clean my DI gun for an hour and a half thorough cleaning, have regular FTF, and FTE with regular XM 193 ammo, and dirtier to handle. I'm not in combat situations like soldiers overseas, but if I was and I have a choice, I would prefer a Gas Piston system as per my experience.

  • @TalonArms I hope you're right, I just got the adams arms upper and can't wait to fire her up.

  • You have been lied to.

Shoot 30 rounds from a DIGS (Direct Gas) AR and "try" to remove the bolt/carrier

you will fry skin like bacon

Do the same from a Piston AR, you can touch your tongue to the volt/carrier and you won't feel anything.

I own 3 different manufacturers Piston AR's, they all run drastically cooler than a DIGS AR.

  • @TalonArms i did the adams arms conversion on my gun. I fired about 400 rds in a weekend and gunk was all under my DD rail. Which is a pain to clean since you have to slide the block out. I might change to the omega. But I haven't cleaned my bolt at all and probably won't even wipe it til i hit 1000. I'll take the carbon a replaceable rail then carbon to the bolt. if my front rail melts and fails i can shoot from the mag well. If the bolt fails and i loose a tooth or extractor. then what?

  • @marktse

Don't worry about carbon build up under the rail. It does not effect anything. Just spray brake cleaner or gun scrubber inside the rail with an extension straw and let it wash off the loose stuff. Just clean the piston and block and you are good to go.

And don't worry about melting a handguard either. It will never get hot enough to melt anything mil-spec.

Bolts break no matter what. Always carry a spare.

  • @TalonArms I figured except its easier to clean a bolt than under a dd rail lite. I have to move the gas block out of the way.

  • Even with the piston wide open as you mentioned, it doesnt seen to fire that fast as some other automatics of the same type do.

  • That is correct. By reducing the rate of fire, the weapon system is more controlable under recoil and you conserve ammo . That is the exact reason I don't own a Mac 10!

  • ak74 with 60 round mag would do better for me. nice gun though!

  • Sorry for the language, kiddies

  • GET A FUCKING WIND SCREEN!!!!

  • swede

  • this mag looks like deek. :(

  • I am seeing prices of $380 as of right now with AA kits with the 1 piece bolt carriers on their website.

  • 500 for the adams arms piston kit, 230ish for the c mag

  • 100 rounds in 10 seconds=600 rounds per minute

  • change to a lighter buffer for fast rounds per minute

  • How does Adams kits compare to PWS?

  • i own one adams arms kit and they run super good i posted some videos on them

  • The PWS requires you to open the gas port so it can not be user installed. Also, the Adams conversion is not permanent. You can swap it back to direct impingement if you ever need to.
